Countering the scourge of terrorism is of interest to all nations and
the issue has been on the international agenda for decades. An
historic milestone was reached in 2006 when, for the first time, all
Member States of the United Nations agreed on a global strategy to
coordinate their counter-terrorism efforts.
The Strategy contains practical recommendations in four key areas:
tackling the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism
preventing and combating terrorism
building countries’ capacity to prevent and combat terrorism and to
strengthen the role of the United Nations system in that regard
and ensuring respect for human rights for all and the rule of law while
countering terrorism
By helping countries implement measures intended to enhance their
legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities, the
Counter-Terrorism Committee has an important role to play in this
Strategy.
