This paper proposes a serverless platform for building and operating edge AI applications. We analyze edge AI use cases to illustrate the challenges in building and operating AI applications in edge cloud scenarios. By elevating concepts from AI lifecycle management into the established serverless model, we enable easy development of edge AI workflow functions. We take a deviceless approach, i.e., we treat edge resources transparently as cluster resources, but give developers fine-grained control over scheduling constraints. Furthermore, we demonstrate the limitations of current serverless function schedulers, and present the current state of our prototype.

The field of AIOps, also known as Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, uses algorithms and machine learning to dramatically improve the monitoring, operation, and maintenance of distributed systems. Its main premise is that operations can be automated using monitoring data to reduce the workload of operators (e.g., SREs or production engineers). Our current research explores how AIOps – and many related fields such as deep learning, machine learning, distributed traces, graph analysis, time-series analysis, sequence analysis, and log analysis – can be explored to effectively detect, localize, and remediate failures in large-scale cloud infrastructures (>50 regions and AZs). In particular, this lecture will describe how a particular monitoring data structure, called distributed trace, can be analyzed using deep learning to identify anomalies in its spans. This capability empowers operators to quickly identify which components of a distributed system are faulty.

How can you leverage the flexibility and extreme scale in the public cloud combined with your Apache Kafka ecosystem to build scalable, mission-critical machine learning infrastructures, which span multiple public clouds or bridge your on-premise data centre to cloud? This talk will discuss and demo how you can leverage machine learning technologies such as TensorFlow with your Kafka deployments in public cloud to build a scalable, mission-critical machine learning infrastructure for data preprocessing and ingestion, and model training, deployment and monitoring. The discussed architecture includes capabilities like scalable data preprocessing for training and predictions, combination of different Deep Learning frameworks, data replication between data centres, intelligent real time microservices running on Kubernetes, and local deployment of analytic models for offline predictions. Deep Learning UDF for KSQL for Streaming Anomaly Detection of MQTT IoT Sensor Data.: I built a KSQL UDF for sensor analytics. It leverages the new API features of KSQL to build UDF / UDAF functions easily with Java to do continuous stream processing on incoming events. Use Case: Connected Cars - Real Time Streaming Analytics using Deep Learning Continuously process millions of events from connected devices (sensors of cars in this example).

"Each year, the technical complexity of making the next great Walt Disney Animation Studios film increases. Animation and Visual FX studios continue to push the bounds of what is possible in computer graphics. This complexity drives rapid technological growth in both computational resources and storage to the point that it exceeds what we can physically provide with our on-premise compute cluster. As a result, we have started to adopt a hybrid approach with the cloud. This session addresses the hurdles that animation and VFX studios face and focuses on automation of 'disposable' components (specifically infrastructure, licensing, fleet management, data and dependency management in a large-scale batch workload). We apply these general cloud techniques and utilities to an animation/VFX workload and push the limits with a very large scale cloud renderfarm deployment. The team from Walt Disney Animation Studios walks through how they use cloud technologies to maximize render capacity. Learn how to leverage high-performance storage (like Amazon EFS), Amazon EC2 networking and the latest EC2 Spot features to provide a fully functional renderfarm at production-quality scale."

We have great infrastructure nowadays, but that only solves half of the problem. The Serverless developer experience shows the way, but it’s clear that FaaS is not the final answer. What we need is a programming model and developer UX that takes full advantage of new Cloud and Edge infrastructure, allowing us to build general-purpose applications, without needless complexity. What if you only had to think about your business logic, public API, and how your domain data is structured, not worry about how to store and manage it? What if you could not only be serverless but become “databaseless” and forget about databases, storage APIs, and message brokers? Instead, what if your data just existed wherever it needed to be, co-located with the service and its user, at the edge, in the cloud, or in your own private network—always there and available, always correct and consistent? Where the data is injected into your services on an as-needed basis, automatically, timely, efficiently, and intelligently. Easy Access to Amazon EMR Spark Clusters Using R and Python in the Browser Using systems like Apache Spark, big data analysis is becoming more accessible from high-level languages like R and Python. However, many analysts are unprepared for the challenges of setting up a big data analytical environment. In this talk, we outline a process that allows anyone in an organization to quickly spin up elastic Spark clusters, then analyze data through RStudio and SparkR, or alternatively pySpark and Jupyter Notebooks. The resulting system is affordable, powerful, and incredibly accessible: It takes just two clicks and a 15-minute wait time for analysts to each have their own cluster. This session will cover the following: the Amazon EMR bootstrap process for installations of high-level languages to work on top of Spark (specifically SparkR and pySpark); dynamic port forwarding with SSH and Foxy Proxy for browser access to RStudio and Jupyter; convenient data loading from Amazon S3 to EMR without leaving RStudio or Jupyter; and automating the startup process for nontechnical data analysts and researchers. Finally, we will share some short studies that demonstrate the power of Spark with EMR to interactively analyze massive datasets and discern public policy insights.
