Optical Backing Storage [Master]
1. Optical backing storagesuch as CDs and DVDs Advantages they can be transported from one computer to another. Both can be used to store computer data. DVDs are used to hold very large files (several Gb) such as movie films. Disadvantages CDs tend to be used for large files (butsmaller than 1Gb) which are too big for a floppy disc to hold such as music and general animation. Praew
2. CD ROM and DVD ROMCD-ROM - Compact Disc - Read Only Memory. DVD ROM - Digital Versatile Disk – Read Only Memory[ This means you can only read from the disc, not write or store data onto it.] Advantages Disadvantages They are relatively tough as long as the surface does not get too scratched. CD-ROM's hold large quantities of data (650 MB). DVD-ROM's hold large quantities of data (4.7 GB). It can’t be used more than once. You cannot save files to a CD-Rom or DVD-Rom (although CD-R and CD-RW discs now exist which can be written to) Praew
3. CD R and DVD R Advantages Disadvantages Applications which require a single burning’ of data. you can use a special read/write CD drive unit to store programs and data onto the disc they can only be written to once Data on a DVD-R cannot be changed Praew
4. CD RW/DVD RW Advantage Disadvantage DVD-RW (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple (1000+) times. the disc is not ruined and can still store data by erasing the faulty data. These new CD-RW media are labeled as "High Speed" rewritable CD. The same has happened for the DVD-RW too. 650MB unformatted CD becomes a 540MB when it has been packet-write formatted. the format process of a CD RW takes a little longer (for example more than 30 minutes with a 2x-speed CD drive). Praew
5. DVD RAM(DVD-Random Access Memory) Advantage DVD-RAM media have been used in computers as well as camcorders and personal video recorders Can be rewritten over 100,000 times Holds more data when using Double Sided discs than dual-layer DVD+RW and DVD-RW Disadvantage DVD-RAM media have always been more expensive than other types of DVD. Less quality than DVD+RW and DVD-RW. Praew
6. HD DVD(High Density Digital Versatile Disc) Advantage Disadvantage HD DVD has a maximum of 15 GB (single layer) and 30 GB (dual layer). Discs can have information more tightly packed on the disc. storing data and high-definition video. Cheaper Hardware HD DVD is that it is discontinued. Can hold maximum 30 GB datawhich less than Blu-ray [50 GB] Praew
7. Blu-ray Advantage Disadvantage Used in video recorders and computer memory Largest storage capacity of optical media. They can have better sound than standard DVD. Expensive discs Long reading times of the discs. Praew
8. Solid state backing storage Advantage Disadvantage Smallest form of memory, used as removable storage. can be easily written to and updated. More expensive than other forms. A speed to saving data to flash memory is very slow compared to saving it to RAM. Praew
9. Memory sticks/Pen drives Advantage Memory sticks You can then add files, erase files, etc. you can more easily copy your files onto a memory stick Pen drives the speed of data transfer to or from the pen drive is very high. you can protect the data on your pen drive by making it password protected. Disadvantage Memory sticks Very expensive Pen drives It’s easily lost, as it is so small. Broken easily. Praew
10. Flash memory cards Advantage Disadvantage Relatively large in space Removable/portable you can find many places to insert them (Camera, computers exe..) Broken easily They are not the fastest Praew
