medieval Japan society.
 Japan’s wealth came from farmers.
 Formed groups called guilds.
 Japan’s wealth also came from increased trade
with Korea, China, and Southeast Asia.

 Men headed the family and had total control
over all family members.
 Marriages were arranged and women were
expected to accept it.
 When Japan became a warrior society with
samurai and daimyo, upper-class women lost
their freedoms.
 In farming families, women had more say in who
they married.
