Suicide is a tragic event. It has a profound personal effect on all associated with the person who
died. Families, friends and society as a whole are affected. There is a particular poignancy when the
suicide is that of a young person at the threshold of life.
Australia has the fifth highest suicide rate per 100 000 persons in the world. While suicide is highest
among males, suicide attempts are higher among females and youth suicide among males are highest

Unemployment and Social Disadvantage
The issues of unemployment and poor long term job prospects are frequently cited in media reports
on youth suicide, particularly in relation to suicides in rural areas. In recent studies of suicide trends,
it has been demonstrated that unemployment is a significant cause of psychological disturbance in
young people who were initially employed and not suffering from any previous documented history
of physical or mental illness.
Young people who attempted suicide were also more often to have come from disadvantaged family
backgrounds (broken homes). Such backgrounds indicate that parental role models were severely

Throughout my career journey, I have met and worked with many people. Many challenges that I
have overcome because of the help they gave me. There was a lot that I learned about youth
development, working alongside these individuals. There was one person that from the moment we
met, we knew that we were going to be a team and accomplish many things that would help provide

How I met my interviewee, Michelle (pseudonym) I went through a rough experience in my life
that affected me emotionally. At the time I was unemployed; I was looking for a new opportunity
that was within the field of working with children. My mother found out through a friend that she
was looking for new staff and advised me to contact her. I met with her, discussed my background,
and from there a new journey began. Michelle is a Hispanic female of Dominican descent. She is

The youth engagement program has a multitude of resources within their program including, events
or support for participants, partnerships, and grants. The many events open to students within the
program are, restorative practices, reading/writing/math support, SAT prep, writing workshops,

Participation in sports by children and adolescents is associated with a range of documented
physical, emotional, social, educational, and other benefits that can last into adulthood. But
increasingly, many young people opt out of sports, while others are locked out due to a lack of
resources or access to community programs. Health and other needs go unmet. The U.S. government
produces limited data on sport participation and physical activity rates, and none on youth before
high school age. The strongest data is generated through an annual household survey conducted by
the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). In 2008, 30.2% of youth ages 6 to 12 were active
to a healthy level through sports, organized or unstructured; by 2015, that number had dropped to
26.6%, according to SFIA. Among 13– to 17–year–olds, the rate fell from 42.7% to 39.3%. I believe,
teens and younger children shouldn't be restricted from playing sports in school because it keeps
you healthy, builds knowledge, and is helping give better self esteem. The first reason why kids
