1. GRAND CITIES LIBRARY
PROPOSAL
Proposed $20 million public library on outlying lots near K-Mart
store in Grand Forks, ND (store# 4022)
2. A NEW OPPORTUNITY
The city of Grand Forks is looking to build a new $20 million
public library to replace the current aging building. Locating
the new library on unoccupied outlying lots near K-Mart
offers a unique opportunity to generate traffic and spur
development around K-Mart and the Grand Cities Mall while
providing Grand Forks with a beautiful new library in a highly
visible and centralized location.
3. ABOUT LIBRARY
The library is the most used public facility in Grand Forks with
850 daily visitors from Grand Forks and the larger five county,
two state region. The Grand Forks Public Library has the
largest collection in the state amongst public libraries and is a
valued resource.
The 40 year old library is outgrowing it's current space which
is tucked away from any busy corridors. The community is
considering a new building in a more visible location. A
consultant has completed a needs assessment and building
project report. The Library Board is looking at building an
approximately $20 million facility.
4. WHAT NEXT?
Despite polls suggesting over 70% of adults in Grand Forks
support building a new library, a ballot measure to construct a
new facility was recently defeated - in large part because the
location issue had not been settled. Still, the need for a larger
space and new building is not going away. As library
supporters reset, they will be open to new options for
potential sites.
5. BIG OPPORTUNITY
Locating the new library near K-Mart/Grand Cities Mall would
not only benefit the property owners, but it would make the
community a better place as well.
A new library would increase traffic to the area and increase
confidence amongst neighboring property owners and
businesses. These businesses would make improvements to
their properties, making the area more appealing to shoppers.
In that regard, while it is obviously too early to make any
official promises, being that this would be a city-owned facility,
infrastructure investments that could benefit the area would
certainly be a possibility.
