2. Disengagement (Theory of Aging)
• Elderly gradually and willingly
withdraw themselves form the
world around them.
• Disengagement theory claims that
it is natural and acceptable for older
adults to withdraw from society and
personal relationships as they age.
3. Signs of
Disengagement
• Carl is the old guy who isolates himself with
society. As in the movie he does not like the
boy and is really annoyed of his presence.
• Through out the movie he is grumpy and is
very determine to get away from everyone
and live out his life in Paradise Valley alone.
• In the beginning, Carl is living in his house
while there is major construction going on.
• Carl being rude to the little boy and wants
him to go away immediately.
5. Dysthymia
• People with dysthymia describe their
mood as sad, but dysthymia is more
than simply feeling sad. Dysthymia is a
chronic form of depression that can
cause people to lose interest in normal
daily activities, have low self-esteem
and an overall feeling of inadequacy,
feelings of hopelessness, and difficulty
with productivity.
6. Signs of Depression
• Carl (old man) was happy with his life until
his wife had died and that developed a sense
of depression upon him.
• Living by himself and isolating him self
from society (disengagement) could have
created his depression of Dysthymia.
• Does not communicate with other people.
• A lonely man living by himself.
• Has flashbulb memories of his wife.
• The looks on his face is plain and dull, with
no emotions.
