People living in Ferguson, Missouri are working to increase capital in their community.
Human Capital
• Groups of people are using their skills to pick up trash and clean up glass. They are using their
peaceful traits to model peaceful demonstrations, as well as their knowledge to think about how
their actions today will impact the future of Ferguson.
Financial Capital
• Community members are showing their investment in the community by cleaning up trash and
broken glass every morning. This support shows business owners that the people of Ferguson care
for them, and want them to remain in community.
Social Capital
• Neighbors helping each other, and citizens assisting business owners, are examples of trust and
community spirit.
Physical Capital
• Citizens are handing out food and bottled water in support of fellow community members and
peaceful demonstrators.

• The article talks about rioting and looting by Ferguson's
community members against the law enforcement. Even
many people have come to help protest from other areas
giving the protestors strength in numbers.
The rioting, looting, and protesting is going on because this
being seen as an inequality with race and power. Because of
this there has been talk and will most likely be future laws
placed to help prevent this from happening again in the
future.

Following the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO, community members
and officials are exploring changes in the culture and policies of their law
enforcement structure. The article title focuses on police officers possibly being
required to wear cameras on their person, but it also discusses changes such as
police car cameras, more African-American police offers on the force in Ferguson
as well as requiring officers to actually live in Ferguson.
This illustrates social planning in response to the devastating outrage that the
residents have expressed in reaction to the shooting of Michael Brown. However,
it is clearly a response that has been festering for a very long time in reaction to
racial inequities and injustices. The shooting of unarmed Michael Brown was a
catalyst for expression of the racial divide in Ferguson that it's citizens experience
on a daily basis. Social planning is utilized to respond to social issues and this,
obviously, is an emotional and extremely sensitive issue that has been festering
for likely, decades, if not longer. One of the focuses of social planning is to bring
power more into balance. Many citizens in Ferguson, MO express frustration with
the police having too much power and using it beyond what is acceptable,
appropriate, and ultimately, effective.
