In Germany Doktor degrees are awarded for various scientific
disciplines:
Natural Sciences: Dr.-rer.-nat.
Social Sciences and Humanities: Dr.-phil.
Law Science. Dr.-jur.
Medical Science: Dr.-med.
Engineering Sciences: Dr.-Ing
German Doktor (Dr.) Degrees
For aiming at a Dr. degree an application at a German University is necessary
Typical acceptance procedure:
- Holding a Master Degree
- Meeting the required profile of the target University department
- Acceptance by a Professor of the University department

Target: Academic qualification Doktor-Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing.)
degree - the highest academic degree in engineering
Awarding Departments (faculties) of a research university
organization:
Main focus: Dissertation
Prerequisite: Master degree, in line with the master profile of the
awarding department
Duration: 3-5 years (sometimes even longer)

The Expectation for Awarding a Dr.-Ing. Degree
German university laws depend on German state regulation
(no federal law available)
Typically the most important requirement is to write a dissertation (Dr-thesis)
where the scientific results are presentated and published.
The German procedure for achieving a Dr. graduation is
- to provide scientific research self resonsibly
- to proove the ability of performing self-dependent research
- to develop the ability to defend the own scientific results achieved
The professor has the role of a supervisor
A second professor typically has the role of an independend evaluator

How to be awarded a German Dr.-Ing. Degree
A professor typically accepts doctoral candidates
- as assistents to the professor (a working contract with the university
is necessary)
- scholarship holders (such as 911 scholarships)
- external doctoral candidates (a working contract with a company
and a funded research project is necessary)
