COACHING
TIPS FOR BECOMING A BETTER SPEAKER
www.CommunicationSkillsTips.com
These are the key takeaways from a coaching session I did with a client. I
believe you’ll find them useful:
1. Keep it conversational. Shorter sentences, shorter words. Use simple,
easy to understand language.
2. Title slide - needs a more contrasting background
3. Good roadmap - work on making the slide look more visually appealing.
Use Smart Art to create the roadmap. Get online to learn how to use
SmartArt.
4. Use colors in your presentation - don't limit yourself to black and blue.
Colors help maintain audience attention.
5. Font sizes - Minimum font size of 25
6. Get rid of the page numbers from the bottom of the slide. Page numbers
are OK for documents but are not needed for a PPT presentation
2. 7. Work on the diagram on Page 5 - use thicker arrows to represent clearer
lines of communication. Space it out. Make it big and easy to read from the
back of the room.
8. Audience involvement - get the audience physically involved by asking
them to raise their hands. Alternatively, personalize your speech by saying,
"I was talking to Hassan earlier, who works in risk management. For those
of you like Hassan in risk management, your job would be to...". This shows
your audience that you've customized your speech. It gives it an impromptu
feel. And it makes your audience members feel special. Even though you
involve only one member of the audience, the rest of the audience will live
vicariously through the one person involved in the presentation.
9. Work on clear transitions between each slide. The slides should not feel
like distinct presentations - they should seamlessly flow from one to the
other...
10. Quotes - for Warren Buffet's quote, have it up on the slide. Either have a
picture of Warren Buffet next to the quote OR use a humorous image that
shows tide washing away showing half-naked person (Example: Slide 5 of
this presentation): http://www.slideshare.net/garr/sample-slides-by-garr-
reynolds
People are visual creatures. So spend time making your visuals more
compelling.
11. Delivery. Pause after you ask questions. Let your audience think. Also,
slow down when speaking...it will help your audience digest your points
better...
