Leadership
“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are
made by hard effort, which is the price which
all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is
worthwhile”. Vince Lombardi
Leadership in the 21st Century
The definition of leadership has been a thorny
issue for many years with each author approaching
the topic from a different perspective. This is not
to say that any of the definitions are right or wrong
“Leadership is the process of influencing the
activities of an individual or a group in efforts
toward goal achievement in a given situation.”
Leadership Process
1) The leader must stay focused on the goal
himself.
2) The leader must build a caring,
meaningful relationship with his
followers.
3) The leader must equip his followers and
assist them to reach the goal.
Boss or Leader?
Boss
One who makes decisions, exercises authority for the
implementation of those decisions and command the
people.
Leader
One who leads the people, develops their people and
teaches good values, how to be a good employee,
supports them in their work, helps whenever the
employee is having difficulty.
The three most important keys to effective
leadership
1 Trust
2 Confidence
3 Effective Communication
The Characteristics of a Good Leader
Honesty
Your business and its employees are a reflection of
yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a
key value, your team will follow you.
Ability to delegate
Trusting your team with your idea is a sign
of strength, not weakness, Delegating tasks
to the appropriate departments is one of
the most important skills you can develop.
The Characteristics of a Good Leader
Communication
Being able to clearly and briefly describe
what you want from your team. If you can’t
relate your vision to your team, you won’t all be
working towards the same goal.
Confidence
Assure everyone that setbacks are natural
and the important thing is to focus on the
larger goal. By staying calm and confident,
you will help keep the team feeling the same.
The Characteristics of a Good Leader
Commitment
If you expect your team to work hard and
produce quality content, you are going to
need to lead by example.
Positive Attitude
Keep your team motivated towards
the continued success of the company,
and keep the energy levels up.
The Characteristics of a Good Leader
Ability to inspire
Being able to inspire you team is great for focusing on
the future goals. It is your job to keep spirits up, and
begins with an appreciation for the hard work.
Creativity
It is during these critical situations that your team will
look to you for guidance and you may be
forced to make a quick decision. It is
important to learn to think outside the box.
Leadership Styles
A leadership style is a leader's style of providing
direction, implementing plans, and motivating people.
It is the result of the philosophy, personality, and
experience of the leader. Different situations call for
different leadership styles.
Autocratic Leadership
Autocratic leadership is an extreme form
of transactional leadership, where leaders have a
lot of power over their people. Staff and team
members have little opportunity to
make suggestions, even if these
would be in the team's or the
organization's best interest.
benefit of autocratic leadership
The benefit of autocratic leadership is that it's
incredibly efficient. Decisions are made quickly, and
work gets done efficiently.
Autocratic leadership is often best used in crises, when
decisions must be made quickly. For instance, the
military often uses an autocratic leadership style; top
commanders are responsible for quickly making
complex decisions, which allows troops to focus their
attention and energy on performing their allotted
tasks and missions.
Democratic/Participative Leadership
Democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they
include team members in the decision-making
process. They encourage
creativity, and team
members are often
highly engaged in
projects and decisions.
Benefits of democratic leadership
There are many benefits of democratic leadership.
Team members tend to have high job
satisfaction and are productive because
they're more involved in decisions.
This style also helps develop people's
skills. Team members feel in control of their destiny, so
they're motivated to work hard by more than just a
financial reward.
downside of democratic leadership
Because participation takes time, this approach can
slow decision-making, but the result is often good.
The approach can be most suitable when working as
a team is essential, and when quality is more
important than efficiency or productivity.
downside of democratic leadership
The downside of democratic
leadership is that it can often
hinder situations where speed
or efficiency is essential. For
instance, during a crisis, a team
can waste valuable time gathering people's input.
Another downside is that some team members might
not have the knowledge or expertise to provide high
quality input.
Laissez-Faire Leadership
This French phrase means "leave it be,“
Laissez-faire leaders may give their teams complete
freedom to do their work and set their own deadlines.
They provide team support with resources and
advice, if needed, but otherwise don't get involved.
Laissez-Faire Leadership
This leadership style can be effective if the leader
monitors performance and gives feedback to team
members regularly. It is most likely to be effective
when individual team members are experienced,
skilled, self-starters.
pros and cons of laissez-faire leadership
The main benefit of laissez-faire leadership is that
giving team members so much autonomy can lead to
high job satisfaction and increased productivity.
The downside is that it can be damaging if team
members don't manage their time well or if they don't
have the knowledge, skills, or motivation to do their
work effectively.
