Goals of Today’s Webinar
• To understand the key elements that make a
“story”.
• To learn some techniques using Cognos Analytics
functionality which can facilitate this presentation.
• To be inspired to approaching our analytics
discipline in a new manner.
10. Examples
• The Examples fail to “tell a story”.
• They are not tailored to the person viewing it.
• They are not intuitive. They must be found, run, and then explained.
• They are primarily useful just in a PC/laptop or in Excel.
11. So now we know “What Isn’t a Story”
• A database is not a story
• A SQL query is not a story
• A BI or reporting package is not a story
• A spreadsheet is not a story
• A visualization is not a story
12. “Okay, I get it. So what is a story
and how do I tell it?”
13. Core Elements of your data Story
#1: The Persona
#2: The Experience
#3: The Mode
14. The “Persona”
• A Persona refers to one or more people with a common
perspective.
• Defined by what a person does during their day to day work,
where they live on an organizational chart.
• User groups are not the same as personas.
15. Example
• A CFO and a COO often have very different day-to-day concerns, even if they
share the same ultimate strategic goal concerning company profitability.
• A CFO might want to see overall performance as depicted by Revenue and
Expenditures, Profitability, i.e. Financial Performance.
• A COO might want to review overall performance as depicted by Sales volume,
on-time deliveries, i.e. Operational Performance.
• “C level executives” might be target user group, but we have to account for the
different personas represented.
16. The “Experience”
• The “Experience” refers to the interaction with the information.
• Key elements of the experience would include:
• Ease of locating the information.
• Ease of comprehension: If you have to explain it...
• The flow of the information: from broad overviews, down to more
specific detailed information.
• Provides meaning on it’s own, but can elicit further questions.
17. The “Mode”
• The “Mode” refers to how interaction with the information
occurs, e.g. Laptop or Phone, email or online, etc...
19. The Design Process
• To build the solution we need to define the 3 elements of a data
story.
• These elements are then pulled together in a “Story board”.
• The “Story board” is used as the template for our report
development.
20. 3 Bears Mattress, Inc. : “Personas”
• CEO: Interested in Financials. Best Performing customers. Makes
strategic decisions primarily based on financial metrics.
• Product Manager: Interested in what is selling. Pricing Strategy. Who
is buying what. Makes recommendations from the standpoint of
volume and momentum of goods sold.
21. 3 Bears Mattress, Inc. : “Experience”
• Want a simple to find and understand interface. Ability to project it
on a screen during a meeting and be able to talk about it.
• Ability to refine the metrics as needed.
• Ability to drill into details.
• Don’t want things in email.
22. 3 Bears Mattress, Inc. : “Mode”
• Needs to work not only on laptops, but also on phones and tablets.
28. Key Technical Feature #3
• Use of a Custom Control to determine the “Mode” of interaction
