The inclusion of experimental narrative writing opportunities throughout an educational program interjects critical thinking and emphasizes the importance of student experiences. Scenarios and simulation based activities were created to help students understand the role of feelings in shaping the human experience in relation to their physical environment. Hands-on activities that create tangible associations with the disabled (or diverse user groups) is the most valuable technique for developing and encouraging positive action. They allow students to filter out personal biases and guide tactical decision making. Research indicates that autobiographical accounts of people create empathy and help students understand the world in different ways rather than relying on preconceived ideas; therefore, reflective narrative writing creates opportunities for students to identify with personas of the populations they research. The simulation and writing activities were implemented within a junior level interior design course relating to understanding building codes for various user groups in society. Pretests were administered to students related to understanding, empathy, and critical thinking in design as it relates to different user groups. Narrative assignments were integrated and user profiles were created for simulation activities based on the information gathered from pretests. Critical writing rubrics were developed and classroom teaching tools were researched and purchased for simulation activities. Students performed simulation activities, writing assignments, class discussions, and reflections. Post tests were administered and evaluated to assess the success of narrative focused activities. The success of student development tracked through the course and was compared to previous year’s final grades and course evaluations.

College Writing 1 Summary and Response Essay Fall Semester 2018 Due Date TBD (Goal date: First Draft Thursday, October 12) Purpose: Summarize a reading and respond to content Preparation: 1. Read pages 1-3 and summarize, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” By Nicholas Carr on Blackboard 2. Prepare a “Reading the Text” graphic organizer 3. Practice group summary 4. Find a quote from the article to support your response. Cite it in APA format. Writing Task: Write a 3- page typed, double spaced summary and response essay. The student writer will... 1. Clearly state a thesis that shows whether they agree or disagree with Carr’s argument. 2. Produce an introduction, body (3-4), and conclusion 3. Produce a summary of the article 4. Practice integrating select quotations 5. Practice using a specific organizational pattern (block style or point by point style). Your summary response will be graded on the following: · Your ability to summarize the main ideas of a reading · Your ability to formulate a thesis that shows your response · Your ability to integrate a quote to support your thesis/response · Your ability to use APA format to type your essay · Your ability to find and incorporate a quote in your essay to support your thesis · Your ability to cite the quote in APA format · Your ability to articulate your ideas grammatically Overview A summary/response is a natural consequence of the reading and annotating process. In this type of essay, writers capture the controlling idea and the supporting details of a text and respond by agreeing or disagreeing and then explaining why. The first step after active reading is writing a summary. Writing summaries is a common practice in college. They pull together the general conclusions and approaches of experts who have done research in a particular subject. Summaries should be written in your own words although you could include short quoted excerpts if you decide the author’s or speaker’s words summarize a point most precisely. Try to use pertinent quotations from the source, working them in gracefully where appropriate. Probably the best way to write a summary is ask yourself the following questions: --What issues are described, explained or resolved in this work? --What is the controlling idea? --What are the supporting details? --What results or conclusions are made? --What opinion does the author want readers to keep in mind about this topic? --What information does the author use to convince readers? After you have written your summary, double-check to be sure that all facts you included are correct. Summary Writing Guidelines To move from an outline to a draft of a summary, follow these guidelines: 1. a) State the author’s name and the title of the text you’re summarizing in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary. 2. b) Express the author’s main idea in your own words in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary (no more than three words in a row from the text you’re summarizing.).

It cites the author and the title (usually in the first sentence); it contains the essay's thesis and supporting ideas; it may use direct quotation of forceful or concise statements of the author's ideas; it will NOT usually cite the author's examples or supporting details unless they are central to the main idea. Most summaries present the major points in the order that the author made them and continually refer back to the article being summarized (i.e. "Damon argues that ..." or "Goodman also points out that ... "). The summary should take up no more than one-third the length of the work being summarized. The Response: A response is a critique or evaluation of the author's essay. Unlike the summary, it is composed of YOUR opinions in relation to the article being summarized. It examines ideas that you agree or disagree with and identifies the essay's strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and logic, in quality of supporting examples, and in organization and style. A good response is persuasive; therefore, it should cite facts, examples, and personal experience that either refutes or supports the article you're responding to, depending on your stance. Two Typical Organizational Formats for Summary/Response Essays: 1. Present the summary in a block of paragraphs, followed by the response in a block: Intro/thesis Summary (two to three paragraphs) Agreement (or disagreement) Disagreement (or agreement) Conclusion Note: Some essays will incorporate both agreement and disagreement in a response, but this is not mandatory. 2. Introduce the essay with a short paragraph that includes your thesis. Then, each body paragraph summarizes one point and responds to it, and a conclusion wraps the essay up. Intro/thesis Summary point one; agree/disagree Summary point two; agree/disagree Summary point three; agree/disagree Conclusion HELP SITE INDEX ABOUT THIS SITE CONTACT [email protecte.

Joining the Conversation In college writing, it is important that you can express yourself clearly and concisely. However, it is often not enough to simply explain what you're thinking. It is often necessary to explain how your ideas and arguments relate to the ideas and arguments offered by other writers. In other words, writing is a type of conversation, and in this lesson, you will begin learning how to join that conversation. Student Learning Outcomes addressed in this unit: Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose Demonstrate knowledge of indivdual and collaborative writing processes Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution Use Edited American English in academic essays Read, reflect and respond critically to a variety of texts Vocabulary for Unit 3 These are the vocabulary words for this unit. Remember to incorporate them into your Discussion Board in this unit. Conviction Impression Misconception Perspective Profound Inherent Inveterate Amenable Impinge Subversion Aesthetic Lesson: Active Reading When you participate in a conversation with a group of people, you must first listen to what the group is saying and understand their ideas and opinions before you can put in your own two cents. A written conversation works much the same way. Before writing about or responding to any text, you must begin by reading carefully and actively. This lesson introduces you to those skills. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing For many writing assignments, you will be required to use source material in your essays. Using source material can strengthen your writing because it shows that you have found evidence to support your main points from other writers. There are several different ways to incorporate source material into your writing: quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, and a combination of any or all of the above. When Should You Quote, Paraphrase, or Summarize? Whether you decide to use quotations, paraphrases, or summaries depends on a number of different factors. Here are some suggestions for how to decide which to use: You should include quotations when The author’s credentials will give your paper credibility It is worded in a powerful, poignant way The wording is very technical and difficult to translate You should include paraphrases when The source material is important but the wording is not (like facts and statistics) The writer is not an expert in the field that would give your paper more credibility You should include summaries when The overall argument or main ideas are important but the details are not The source materials needs to be shorter than the original How do I quote, paraphrase, and summarize? Steps for Quoting Make a Quotation Sandwich Start with an introduction to the quote saying who says it and giving the author’s credentials. Give the quote. Don’t ...

ENG 123: Assignment Two, Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric Draft Overview: Persuasion is a constant in each and every one of our lives. No matter where we look, what we read, what we see, or who we interact with, we are inevitably going to encounter some form of persuasion. Advertisements want us to buy things. Newspapers and television want to convince us of what we should feel about events. We are put into positions where we must defend our thoughts and beliefs to others, and the process we apply is typically some form of persuasion. Persuasive writing is one of the most powerful forms of writing—it has the ability to influence one's thoughts, and also the ability to change one's mind about a particular issue. The persuasive essay is an ideal opportunity to support an opinion on an issue utilizing researched facts and information. This also gives the chance to recognize that there is an opposing viewpoint to a position and to refute their argument, noting they are the intended audience of the piece. Prompt: For this milestone, you will submit a draft of your persuasive essay. At this point in the course, if you have completed the previous milestone guided activities, the textboxes should be combined and transformed into a draft. This milestone will help you address the critical elements from Sections II - IV below, which will ultimately inform your final submission of the persuasive essay. You have until the deadline to work on this draft. Whatever is completed by the deadline will be submitted to your instructor for grading and feedback. Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Introduction: This is where readers will have a chance to get an idea of what your essay will be about and what you will prove throughout. Do not give all of your information away here, but give readers a sample of what is to come. Do not forget to review your writing plan to make sure you are hitting all of the points that you planned out, while also stating your argument. A. Overview the issue you have selected, briefly describing main points and your argument. B. Compose an engaging thesis that states the argument that you will prove and support throughout your essay.
