Literacy is traditionally understood as the ability to read and write.The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as the "ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society".
2. What is Illiteracy?
Complete illiteracy means a person cannot read or write at all. an individual
may have basic reading, writing and numerical skills but cannot apply them
to accomplish tasks that are necessary to make informed choices and
participate fully in everyday life. Such tasks may include:
Reading a medicine label.
Reading a nutritional label on a food product.
Filling out a job application.
Reading and responding to correspondence in the workplace.
Filling out a home loan application.
Reading a bank statement.
3. The Root Causes:
There are several causes due to which illiteracy is increasing day by day:
Half-hearted planning and management of literacy and continuing
education.
Limited budget.
Lack of reliable statistics and research researchers.
Weak community participation.
Lack of multimedia material.
Lack of special skilled textbook writers.
Poor follow up of programs.
In-service teachers do not take such work seriously.
Dependence on foreign aid.
Dropout rate is high.
Over-crowded classrooms.
4. ILLITERACY IN PAKISTAN:
Education in Pakistan is heavily influenced by religion. For instance, one
study of Pakistani science teachers showed that many rejected evolution
based on religious grounds.
5. SURVEY:
Our survey not only focused on students we also gather the thoughts
of other people, having different occupations. The questionnaire is
the major source of our data about public outlook.
SAMPLE SIZE:
For the study, we targeted fifty people in we included students,
employee, people on street. Now all questionnaires were completed and
analyzed

social world. Which help us to reduce the illiteracy
rate in Pakistan. Make a system that can be
beneficial and constructive to everyone.

15. ESTABLISHING ADULT AND PARENTAL
LITERACY PROGRAMS:
Developing adult literacy programs tied to job or income generation
opportunities and the completion of relevant daily tasks.
Developing adult literacy programs that help parents improve their
own reading and writing skills and show them how to encourage their
own children to enjoy literacy.
Running awareness and advocacy campaigns to overcome negative
attitudes
Associated with illiteracy e.g. shame at being illiterate or low priority
placed on education.
16. RESOURCES, TRAINING AND
TECHNOLOGY:
Developing training and mentoring programs for teachers to
improve quality of schooling. This includes ongoing monitoring and
professional development of teachers.
Ensuring schools and students are supplied with appropriate
textbooks and resources in the right language.
Ensure literacy schooling and training includes access to and the
ability to use and own computers. In today’s technology-connected
world, true literacy includes being able to use a word processor to
read and write.
Develop tutoring, remedial and reading for fun programs for slow
learners to help them keep up with their peers and overcome lack
of engagement in reading.
17. PAYING FOR IT ALL:
Creating a central body that can accept and manage financial
resources for international literacy initiatives. Such an entity
would liaise with and act on behalf of governments, non-
profit organizations, the private sector and the philanthropic
community.
Getting governments to pledge additional funding to combat
illiteracy within their own nations and to commit to
supporting illiterates in developing countries.
Mounting a worldwide fundraising effort to raise awareness,
empathy and donations from individual charitable giving to
wipe out illiteracy.
