5. The Greenhouse Effect:
When heat from the Earth is absorbed by
greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and then
emitted back to Earth, the Earth’s surface and
oceans heat up. This is known as the greenhouse
effect.
Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s surface
would be about -18 degrees Celsius (or about -0.5
degree Fahrenheit) and most life could not live.
6. The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect:
Is the increasing amount of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere as a result of human activities.
Greenhouse Gas: gases in our atmosphere which
absorb heat energy from the Earth and send it back
to Earth; as a result, the Earth becomes warmer
e.g. carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapour (H2O), methane
(CH4)
come from natural and artificial sources

8. What is global warming?
What do we already know about
global warming?
What does the Greenhouse Effect
have to do with Global Warming?
9. Global warming refers to the increase
in temperature around the world over
the last half of the twentieth century.
Global Warming: is an increase in average
temperature of the Earth's surface and oceans from
1905-2005, the global average surface temperature
increased 0.74 degrees Celsius (or about 1.4 degrees
Fahrenheit) in some areas like Canada’s arctic, the
average temperature is rising more quickly (e.g. the
Mackenzie Basin has experienced an increase of 1.5
degrees Celsius or 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit)
10. Global Warming Poster Activity
Split the class into groups of 4.
Hand out Global Warming Poster and review the vocabulary. Give
each group one A3 piece of paper.
Have the students create a creative poster that explains the
process of global warming. They need to include the words and
images on the sheet of paper.
Afterwards, have the students present their posters, and come
up with a class image of how global warming works. You can
have them write it in their notebooks as you draw it on the
board.
You can even watch the BrainPop on global warming at this point
if you want. It’s repetitive but the reinforcement is good.

Ask your parents or research:
What are some effects of
global warming?
