LIFE AFTER SURGERY
Diet : The modifications made to your gastrointestinal tract will
require permanent changes in your eating habits that must be
adhered to for successful weight loss. Most important is that you
strictly follow your surgeon's recommended guidelines.
Birth control and pregnancy : It is strongly advised that women
of childbearing age use the most effective forms of birth control
during the first 16 to 24 months after Bariatric Surgery. However
obese female with infertility gets significantly increased c h a n c
e s o f g e t ti n g pregnant after weight loss surgery.
Long-term follow-up : Over time, you will need periodic checks
for anaemia (low red blood cell count) and vitamin B12, folate
and iron levels. Follow-up tests will initially be conducted every 3
to 6 months, or as needed and then every 1 to 2 years. Follow-up
care is recommended for life.
Life Long Commitment: : To maintain weight loss after the
surgery, you have to continue to eat less, change your dietary
habits and increase physical activity. Weight reduction surgery
helps you in changing your food behaviour by giving early satiety
after a small meal and providing prolonged feeling of fullness so

Post operative instruction and information :
1. After the surgery, you may be kept in the Surgical ICU
overnight.
2. You will be sleepy immediately after the operation due to
sedation given during anaesthesia and during the recovery
period.
3. You may have some discomfort when coming out of the
effect of sedation. It gradually reduces to a tolerable level
within a few minutes without any painkiller injections. You
should try to avoid these drugs because they produce
drowsiness and you may sleep for a longer period which is
not desirable.
4. You may feel nauseated in the immediate post-operation
period. In this case, you must inform the nurse so that
appropriate medication may be given to prevent vomitting,
as it is not desirable.
5. You must try to move your limbs immediately after the
surgery. You will then be gradually mobilised during the day
following surgery. Your catheter shall be removed and you
will be free to use the washroom on your own.
6. The is no restriction on your physical activity. You are
allowed to walk as soon as you are shifted to your room. You
are free to climb stairs. However you must avoid lifting
heavy weight for 4-6 weeks following surgery.
7. You shall be discharged once your oral intake of fluids
reaches 1.5-2 litres per day.
8. There will be a pipe attached to your abdomen which will be
removed during your follow-up appointment.
9. Your follow-up appointment is usually 1 week after
discharge from the hospital.
