ZigBee

ā€¢ ZigBee is designed to be a low power, low cost, low data rate, wireless
  solution.
ā€¢ ZigBee relies upon the robust IEEE 802.15.4 PHY/MAC to provide reliable
data transfer in noisy, interference-rich environments
ā€¢ ZigBee layers on top of 15.4 with Mesh Networking, Security, and
  Applications control
ā€¢ ZigBee Value Propositions
ļ‚§ Addresses the unique needs of most remote monitoring and control
     network applications
      > Infrequent, low rate and small packet data
ļ‚§ Enables the broad-based deployment of wireless networks with low
     cost & low power solutions
      > Example: Lighting, security, HVAC,
      > Supports peer-to-peer, star and mesh networks
ļ‚§ Monitor and sensor applications that need to have a battery life of
     years on alkaline batteries
      > Example ā€“ security systems, smoke alarms

ā€¢ Enables cost-effective, low power, reliable devices for
    monitoring and control
ā€¢ ZigBeeā€™s architecture developed to target environments and
applications best suited to the technology
ā€¢ Provide a platform and implementation for wirelessly
    networked devices
ā€¢ Ensure interoperability through the definition of application
    profiles
ā€¢ Define the ZigBee network and stack models
ā€¢ Provide the framework to allow a separation of concerns
for the specification, design, and implementation of ZigBee

How A ZigBee Network Forms

ā€¢ Devices are pre-programmed for their network function
ļ‚§ Coordinator scans to find an unused channel to start a network
ļ‚§ Router (mesh device within a network) scans to find an active
channel to join, then permits other devices to join
ļ‚§ End Device will always try to join an existing network
ā€¢ Devices discover other devices in the network providing
 complementary services
ļ‚§ Service Discovery can be initiated from any device within the
    network
ā€¢ Devices can be bound to other devices offering
 complementary services
ļ‚§ Binding provides a command and control feature for specially
    identified sets of devices

ZigBee Stack Architecture Basics

ā€¢ Addressing
ļ‚§ Every device has a unique 64 bit MAC address
ļ‚§ Upon association, every device receives a unique 16 bit network
    address
ļ‚§ Only the 16 bit network address is used to route packets within
    the network
ļ‚§ Devices retain their 16 bit address if they disconnect from the
network, however, if the LEAVE the network, the 16 bit address
    is re-assigned
ļ‚§ NWK broadcast implemented above the MAC:
    > NWK address 0xFFFF is the broadcast address
    > Special algorithm in NWK to propagate the message
    > ā€œBest Effortā€ or ā€œGuaranteed Deliveryā€ options
    > Radius Limited Broadcast feature

Devices (up to 65,536 in theory)
ā€¢ Mesh network routing permits path formation from any source device to any
  destination device

Wireless Networking Basics

ā€¢ Network Scan
ļ‚§ Device scans the 16 channels to determine the best channel to
    occupy.
ā€¢ Creating/Joining a PAN
ļ‚§ Device can create a network (coordinator) on a free channel or
    join an existing network
ā€¢ Device Discovery
ļ‚§ Device queries the network to discover the identity of devices on
    active channels
ā€¢ Service Discovery
ļ‚§ Device scans for supported services on devices within the
    network
ā€¢ Binding
ļ‚§ Devices communicate via command/control messaging

Editor's Notes

  1. As we look at several short range technologies, you can see how they cover the gamut in key areas such as throughput and range. You will also notice that some technologies do overlap in these areas. In these instances we need to look at more than a few attributes as well as outside factors that can effect or decision. For example, Bluetooth tried to push into the WLAN space for Networking. It adopted a profile that supported TCP/IP and vendors developed access points. However, WLAN was already being deployed in the infrastructure and had better throughput and range ā€“ which were key attributes, so it won out and Bluetoothā€™s success in this area is very limited.
  2. Driving standards: We are a promoter company of the ZigBee Alliance (only 6 total) and a driving member of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Our PHY (physical layer) was chosen as the standard, and our MAC (media access control) was a joint proposal with Philips (we wrote the spec). Motorolans have also authored and co-authored technical articles, white papers, and even two books. We are regarded as the technical experts on the technology and recognized as paving the way for the standard. First to market: We were the first to demonstrate 802.15.4 and ZigBee technology in June of 03. We are not on our first generation like other customers. We have already sampled to our alpha customers and they are already developing with our solution. Superior performance: Our RF data modem is the only IC to truly achieve -94 dBm receiver sensitivity, well above specification at -85 dBm, on-chip voltage regulation, improved adjacent channel rejection, and adjustable output power transmission.
