Sex and Gender
Sex Gender
Biological differences between male
and female which are universal and
cannot change.
Social differences between men and
women based on the sex of the
person, usually culturally learned.
Facts about human biology Roles learnt through the culture and
society we live in
SEX is physically determined GENDER is socially created
3
But both are often used interchangeably.
Necessity of Gender
 Nature gave different abilities and powers to male and
female and assigned different works to both so that system
of life can run efficiently. (Creator knows better)
 Male are more physically strong, more situation resistant
and more hard hearted.
 Female are comparatively physically weak, more
emotionally affected, more caring and more absorbing.
4
When was problem created?
 Everything was running fine. It was only when some
men started thinking that they are superior to women
because they are physically strong.
 Men started using women only for their comfort,
lust, and household jobs.
 Started treating women only as a subject.
5
Gender based problems
 Women are deprived of choice, identity, education,
decision making, property rights, political
representation ........
 Most important is safety.
6
WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT
7
Empowerment : What people think.
Nowadays people including women themselves,
specially youngsters, limited women empowerment
to
 Freedom to roam freely at late night.
 Freedom of hanging out with male partners.
 Freedom of wearing lesser clothes, without being
gazed upon.
 Freedom of opting outdoor life rather than household
jobs.
8
9
But these are choices which vary person to
person due to
Society environment.
Religious considerations.
Family restrictions.
Individuals own choice.
Actual meaning of the term
10
But the term Women Empowerment has a very broad
meaning.
It reflects the need of change in society which will
produce Women Empowerment in reality.
Empowerment refers to increase in the
spiritual, social, economic and educational
strength .
11

Freedom from oppressions
Identity and choice
Improvement in education
Property rights
Involvement in decision making (household & society)

Conclusion
 Neither men are superior to women nor women are
superior to men.
 They are also not equal in all respect because nature
has assigned them different jobs and different needs.
 Women should not be ill treated. They should be
given all rights.
21
 No doubt there are always some restrictions on both men
and women considering social norm, religion and long
term effects.
 These may be criticised .But they need to be followed .
 These may vary on gender basis but they should not
produce injustice on gender basis.
