According to a recent analytical report by Visiongain, drug discovery outsourcing will continue to grow over the
next decade and will rise to a $43.7 billion dollar industry by 2026, as compared to an estimated 19.2 billion in
2016 (or $21.2 billion according to Kalorama Information).
… over 80% of bio-pharma respondents report increased alliance activity compared to five years ago.
Getting ideas and expertise from external sources is a well-established practice in the pharmaceutical industry
with about one-third of all drugs in the pipelines of the top ten pharmaceutical companies initially developed
elsewhere, according to a 2014 WSJ article by Jonathan D. Rockoff.

However, {outsourcing + collaboration}
in itself is not sufficient
Networked economies need to be
designed, built and then scaled using
structured methods & system thinking

networks is not created by chance or by
common sense alone

Principles of
Success:
Productivity
Robustness
Niche Creation

“Productivity. The most important measure of a biological ecosystem’s health is its ability to effectively
convert non biological inputs, such as sunlight and mineral nutrients, into living outputs—populations of
organisms, or biomass. The business equivalent is a network’s ability to consistently transform technology
and other raw materials of innovation into lower costs and new products.
Robustness. To provide durable benefits to the species that depend on it, a biological ecosystem must
persist in the face of environmental changes. Similarly, a business ecosystem should be capable of
surviving disruptions such as unforeseen technological change. The benefits are obvious: A company that
is part of a robust ecosystem enjoys relative predictability, and the relationships among members of the
ecosystem are buffered against external shocks.
Niche Creation. Robustness and productivity do not completely capture the character of a healthy
biological ecosystem. The ecological literature indicates that it is also important these systems exhibit
variety, the ability to support a diversity of species. There is something about the idea of diversity, in
business as well as in biology, that suggests an ability to absorb external shocks and the potential for
productive innovation.”

“OWKIN, a New York City-based company that provides machine learning tools for
medical research purposes, has launched an AI-powered network comprised of 44
hospitals and research institutions in the United States and Europe. Members
include Cleveland Clinic, Mount Sinai and Groupe AP-HP, a group of 39 hospitals in
France.
Dubbed the OWKIN Loop Network, the initiative allows researchers to train
predictive models on real-world data and transfer the gained knowledge to a
collective intelligence. Fellow researchers, partner hospitals and pharmaceutical
companies are then able to use the information to refine patient treatment and
expedite drug R&D.”
“Ten large pharmaceutical companies, including Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca
and GSK, are embarking on the first collaboration to train their drug-discovery,
machine-learning algorithms on each other’s data.
Owkin, a Google Ventures-backed start-up based in New York and Paris, has
developed a secure, blockchain-based system that allows an algorithm to trawl
competitors’ data with full traceability — but crucially, without revealing commercial
secrets to rivals.”
