Editor's Notes

  1. SLIDE PURPOSE: Start the presentation with setting an expectation that something has to change in the storage worldThe storage industry, more than other IT areas, is currently experiencing a major technology change. You probably realize this through the significant amount of startup companies which have evolved in our industry over the past decade with innovations that have reached a maturity level which are now ready for the mainstream market. This can be followed by the significant amount of M&A activites happening not just by HP. What are the drivers for this? The last significant technology shift happened 15-20 years ago when storage started to be pooled into SAN solutions, no longer direct attached to server. Most storage systems available today are designed in a monolithic way to cope with the IT requirements of these days (different to reality today):Application unique IT silos (Virtualization, Utility )Disparate IT infrastructure (to be converged)Predictable workloads (more and more unpredictable)IT-driven timelines (business driven instant demand)Structured data (unstructured data)How does storage need to change to cope in this new world?Storage of next era of computing needs to be designed to excel alongside the3 megatrends that are driving IT thinking:An end-to-end virtualized infrastructurewithin a IT-as-a-service driven Cloud environmentand with the challenge of Big Data, or even to say ‚Big Everything‘ which accepts that with big data, everything around it gets big as wellAnecdotes:Big Data: In 2005, we generated 150 exabytes of digital information. In 2010, this volume increased eightfold. We rely on technology to help us process and manage this data, serving it up in consumable chunks. By 2015, the total worldwide cumulative digital archive capacity is projected at 300,000 Petabytes. That’s a lot of chunksCloud: In both recessionary times and those of hyper growth, it tends to be technology that drives new buying patterns for goods, lowers barriers to entry for markets, and which provides new opportunities to “leapfrog” over existing business models. For example, new cloud-based service models such as IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) are driving new purchasing and consumption patterns.
  2. INTENT: Identify key storage considerations for those building cloud infrastructure. Touch on gaps in 20 year old architectures. Setup key differentiators for HP 3PAR.
  3. Enterprises with large data volumes need an efficient storage infrastructure; they will be looking to reduce hardware and associated costs substantially to keep their offering competitive. A key issue has been over-provisioning, with many sites exhibiting up to 75% unused capacity. They also need to get operations and administrative costs under control; in many cases existing teams are being stretched massively as their data farms grow. It is crucial that the data for multiple organizations can be managed securely and independently within the storage infrastructure – known as multi-tenancy. 3PAR meets all these requirements – and as we will see, this is a major understatement…They are Multi-Tenant, able to securely support huge numbers of applications and customers, concurrently. This is crucial for Service Providers, and of course is essential for enterprise applications, particularly in a highly virtualized environment. They are Efficient: case studies show reductions in acquisition and operational costs by up to 50%. 3PAR Thin Provisioning capabilities actually turn the rules of capacity allocation upside down! It allows users to safely allocate more storage capacity to host applications than actually purchased! 3PAR users can postpone physical disk purchases indefinitely, until the true capacity is actually required. They are Autonomic: let’s clarify what we means by Autonomic. A definition helps: autonomic is an adjective, derived from the Greek ‘auto’ = self, and ‘nomos’ = law. Hence Autonomic means self-regulating. Autonomic Storage is like breathing—you don’t even have to think about it. 3PAR simplifies, automates, and expedites storage management by handling storage provisioning, tiering, and change management autonomically—intelligently, at a sub-system level, without administrator intervention. It is this autonomic management of storage capacity that makes 3PAR so easy to manage at the human level. Customer case studies and analyst reports show increased storage management efficiency of up to 10x, or up to 90% saving in administrator costs.
  4. *** Alternative slide from SD Strategy slide. ***Converged utility storage: (3PAR, IBRIX) takes advantage of specialized architectures to deliver unique capabilities such as multitenancy, autonomic management, and autonomic storage tiering to simplify Tier 1 storage and provide massive scalability and performance in a consolidated storage system. These next-generation, Tier 1 utility storage platforms are built on a clustered architecture designed for virtualization, the cloud, and delivering IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS). o Multitenancy enables the creation of Virtual Private Arrays (VPAs) with secure workload segregation for massive consolidation capabilities without sacrificing performance. o Autonomic management and storage tiering capabilities balance cost and performance while dramatically reducing administration time. o Integration with HP CloudSystem Matrix via the HP Storage Provisioning Manager interface provides a simplified path to the cloud. o Storage born for the cloud—designed to boost efficiency in public and private cloud deployments.
  5. 3PAR is an ideal platform for shared workload consolidation with performance, scalability and mixed workload support that allows sharing without compromise. And with virtual private array, it provides secure isolation of data in shared environmentsFinally, it’s resilient. Whether adding new workloads, additional capacity or making service level changes – all can be done without impact to existing users. These all make 3PAR utility storage ideal for cloud and utility computing
  6. 3PAR is efficient, providing storage that is thin, optimized and green, reducing acquisition and operational costs. With thin technologies, including thin provisioning, thin conversion and thin persistence, 3PAR Utility Storage reduces capacity requirements by eliminating over provisioning and providing fast and simple space reclamation. So instead of buying 100 TBs, for example, 3PAR customers buy on average just 40TBs.With autonomic storage tiering, 3PAR Utility Storage moves data across tiers in a policy based manner, balancing customers investment in capacity optimized vs performance optimized resources. And, 3PAR is a recognized leader in green storage and still the only carbon neutral storage platform in the world.
  7. 3PAR is autonomic and reduces storage administration time by 90%. The virtualization and automation built in responds to changing conditions without the need for manual intervention. This means you get a storage system that is up fast – within hours, and sometimes minutes, the system is reading and writing data – rather than in days or weeks. And once it is up, the mesh active architecture means all controllers are active on each and every volume in the array, delivering high performance to all applications even under failure scenarios. The system also responds instantly to changing workloads, performance spikes, etc and does not require human intervention.
  8. You can see here the leading SPC-1 result for HP P10000 3PAR. Again, the point is not to brag or to suggest that the SPC-1 perfectly represents your workload environment. The point is to illustrate (using an open and audited benchmark built from real application traces) not just the scalable levelsof performance of the 3PAR Storage Systems, in particular the new P10000 3PAR, also known as V-Class – necessary for eliminating worries and concerns in a consolidated environment – but the high quality of that performance. That is, this chart is indicative of the low latencies that stem from the 3PAR Architecuture. Response-time sensitive applications like Oracle and other databases and Exchange require this. Other applications and end users like it too! VMWare, which makes extensive use of virtual memory pages (to disk) really loves it, and permits more VMWare instances to be consolidated on a given physical server. 3PAR’s architecture enables you to start small and scale (as you grow) with high and consistent levels of performance – high SPC-1 result and the linear scaling of that result are proof points for performance scalability. And, as you’ll see in the upcoming slides, you don’t need to compromise utilization (e.g. shortstroking) to achieve high performance – proof point: high utilization of configured capacity. You also don’t have to be a PhD to achieve that performance result in your own datacenter. With 3PAR’s autonomic features, you can see this level of performance in your data center with simple and easy configuration -- proof point metric is Command lines per ASU TBWith HP 3PAR, you are able to achieve the highest performance at high levels of utilization (% of ASU capacity used) at lowest cost ($/ASU TB) with ease of use (Cmd lines/TB).ONLY IF a question arises -- Note that we included IBM’s DS8700 Easy Tier as part of the ‘high end’ compares in this chart because of its capabilities. It did not fare well compared to others likely because of this particular SPC configuration, with mixed SSD and SATA drives. Also make sure customer understand that the IBM SVC result actually consists of TWO DS8700 fronted by SIX SVC nodes.
