How I can help you?
I am not going to tell you how to build your future.
I will share my experience and failures so you could learn.
Passion to join Air Force. Defend my country and serve the society.
Even after joining UoM, passion continued to be there.
However after graduation, the dreams changed. Joining Air Force seems like not as interesting based on the things I hear from my friends who work there. I felt it’s not the best thing I could achieve with my life.
I was dreamless! I didn’t know what I want to do
Anyway after graduating from Engineering Faculty of University of Moratuwa, The most reputed engineering faculty of Sri Lanka, the career paths are infinite. And the most common path is to become a software engineer, but I was not passionate as such to become just a code cutter for someone else.
Yet chose to become a SE.
That was me! And yet, I am here doing a session for you guys about how to prepare for future…
Don’t be surprise. My life story doesn’t stop there. So I will come to that…
To begin with, how many of you have heard of Steve Jobs. Can I see a raise of hands at least?
He was a dropped out from Reed College. And later he became the co-founder, chairman and the CEO of Apple. Which is in the top 5 most profitable companies in the world.
In 2005 he was invited to conduct the commencement in Stanford University graduation ceremony. There he made his remarkable speech.
“You cannot connect the dots looking forward.
You can only connect them looking backwards.
So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
What are the dots mean?
I really like to see if someone would stand up and tell what they are. Anyone?
Actually I wanted to take that as an example if anyone of you stood up.
If you have stood up here, that would be a real big dot for your life!
You will not only give an answer, but you will bring up the courage within you.
And the next time you are in such a situation, or similar, it will be nothing for you to stand up from the crowd.
Likewise, the dots mean the things we do.Learning to play a musical instrument. Or maybe singing.Share your knowledge. Definitely you can conduct a session to school kids and share your experience.
How to study for their ALs and how to manage time as you did.
Or learn something new.
Maybe some programming, some management concepts or economic concepts.
Read a book on your subjects. Or study!
Write a blog. Or create your own website.
Anything can be considered as a dot in your life.
What Steve Jobs said was,
you can only connect the dots looking backwards.
You may plan to become a Software Engineer in 2-3 years.
Or pursue a PhD under the area of Business Intelligence in 4 years.
Or a CEO of a successful company in 10 years.
Would you now be able to tell, what are the only dots you need to create to become what you want to be? It is hardly possible.
So the point I want to bring here is, create as much as dots in your life.
When I was preparing the slides I remembered this image.
I am sure all of you have connected dots in such images. I did.
So by looking these random dots, can you tell what it is? I can’t.
But if you go through these dots, connecting each, then you will get the picture.
Likewise, you can connect dots only by looking backwards.
If no dots, there is nothing to connect and you will not be able to see what it is!
Back to my life story. Where did I stop? I didn’t have any ambition.
I knew I will become an engineer but didn’t know who I want to see myself as in 5 years. Or in 10 years.
But I created dots. Some are relevant to my degree and most are not!
And Today I am a senior software engineer at 99X Technology.
Also, leading a global volunteer organization, SL2College, which provide higher education information to students.
Today when I look back I can clearly connect some dots to which helped me to be here.
If I take my career at SL2College, being a prefect of my school, participating toastmaster sessions, Organizing Hit the grounds event at CSE are the dots which clearly supported to me to get hired by SL2College. These were the points I used to impress the interviewer.
And If I take my career at 99X Technology, my personal blog, my LinkedIn profile, getting a good GPA helped me a lot.
However, most importantly, I remember in 2011, 99X Technology conducted a career guidance session to my batch.
There they asked a question and I stood up and answered. Of course they gave me a chocolate as well.
Later when I joined the company for my internship they said that they remembered me at the session.
Likewise, now only I can connect the dots which I did in my university career.
And after 10 years, there will be a separate set of dots connected in my life. Which I have no idea right now.
So your future depends on your ability to create dots. Do not miss any opportunity you get.
I feel now it’s the time you start getting bored and hungry. But you have to stay up with me for few mins more.
To refresh you, take out a paper and a pen.
Okay now you have wrote who you want to see yourself as in future. Anyone prepared to share with the audience?
And now comes the real question. Why!
And do not worry, if you don’t have a goal! But it’s tricky.
And I’m in the 2nd category!
Would like to create a dot?
Can someone tell me what you expect from the internship?
The best quote of internship.
Few years back after my internship I would have said it’s not only about coding.
But being the internship manager for 2 years, I’d now say it’s not at all about coding.
It is an opportunity get practical exposure on the industry!
Well this was what you expect from internship, but let me give you a brief idea on what industry expects from you.
Not everything – but very few pointers which I believe important.
Personal Hygiene
Complaint.
Usually wear the same t-shirt/trouser for weeks.
Do not consider about the smell.
But not should be anymore!
The first impression is respect!
Get to know how people address each other.
Mr./Mrs, Firstname, Ayya/Akka
Machang level.
Be within comfort zone
As soon I joined I used to think that if I go to my lead to clarify everything, he would think I am not competent enough. So when I came across a problem I assumed that the answer and without clarifying, implement them. But unfortunately most the times I had to change my work and redo it. That’s when my lead gave me this advice.
Eg: Even naming a variable on the first day.
Never to make assumptions but to clarify always.
The reason is while study we develop programs with our own requirements. Even at assignments, we are allowed to make assumptions and go ahead. But in industry we work for customers. Even the customer gave us his requirements, he might not have conveyed the requirements of every aspect of the system which he wants. Or maybe even he hasn't thought about it. So It is very important to clarify all the time when you came across an issue.
The most interesting experienced I had in my internship. In university I had project teams for different assignments. But all the team members are my peers. So the knowledge level was somewhat align and we never gave much consideration about best practices in working with a team. But while my internship I got to work with a team where it had all varieties of team members. Software Architects, Leads, Senior SEs, Business Analysts and QAs.
Among them, I want to highlight the value of being dependable. Being dependable is when you were given a task, you should be fully responsible for it and while doing that, should always update your lead on the progress.
Another Important aspect I experienced is networking and making connection with others. In the internship I got a great opportunity to meet a lot of people with different backgrounds. It helped me a lot in my future work as in organizing events in my university, finding a job or even when I get a technical problem, I could talk to them and find solutions.
And remember the IT community is still not very large. With networking and making connections, you can be a part of the IT community also.
This was one of my turning points. I was able to network as much and even with the CEO.
Later when I joinied I was invited to help him in his social events.
Search your name on Google. You’ll know where you are.
In my opinion having a completed LinkedIn profile is the best thing you can do to be a part among the professionals.
Moreover you can be an active blogger. Write the thing related to your studies or what you learned or what you feel.
This is a capture from my blog. I started it when I was in level 2. Initially what I did was copy nice and touch posts I see and add them. Later I started to write articles about the technologies I learn and the things I learn from different sessions I participate. Like this.
And of course I will write a blog post about the presentation I do here after I go home.
If you are not into it, I suggest you to start today itself. When you go home, you can start your blog by writing the things you felt interested today.
And be active in online forums like Quora and Stackoverflow. These are few which I follow but the possibilities are many.
The most important this – Attitude
As soon I started my internship, the main goal was to learn all the technologies out there. And I thought knowing all the technologies is what industry expects from us. But when working and listening to talks of my mentors I was realized that what industry expects from us. Not the knowledge of all the technologies but good attitudes. What they told me was, they like to hire people for good attitude and then train them for skills.
So what are these attitudes? Is it something you do or you don’t do? Is anyone interested in sharing the meaning of good attitudes? What I mean by good attitude here is, being friendly with everyone. Being thankful if someone helps you. Never look down on any idea of anyone, but respect them. Be constructive when you comment or criticize. Its all about how you behave.
Eagerness to learn
Respect seniors – Some may call you machang, but you need to be within your limits.
Being down to earth
So it is almost the time for lunch I guess. Today initially I gave insight to you about the importance of creating dots in your life.
You have to create as much as dots in your life.
You may or may not have the exact ambition on who you want to become.
The more the dots you create, the more confident you will be.
Then It was about how to develop your communication.
It is obvious that communication is a main point people consider on evaluating a person.
Good communication can take you to heights as well if you didn’t consider it, it will break you.
And then the importance of online presence. Because today, companies don’t wait till people apply to them for jobs.
If they get a vacancy, they will try find people. So most of the times, it is through professional networks like LinkedIn.
And other online forums like Stackoveflow.
This is all about building your identity. Who you are. If you think you have time till you pass out, you are very too late.
If you haven’t practice what I discussed today, then it should be the first thing you need to do after you go home today.
Anyhow at the end you may feel,
I do whatever I feel to do. This is me and this is how I roll! And I don’t care what everyone else is thinking!!!
But,
While being yourself, you have to uphold the status of many; Parents, School, University and your Profession… Engineer!
