9. • PubMed/MEDLINE: database of article
citations (not a full-text database)
• 23 million citations
• MeSH: dictionary of terms used to
organize articles in PubMed
• Searches by subject not keyword
• Searches synonyms, narrower terms
PubMed / MeSH
9
10. Clarifying confusing nomenclature
PubMed (search
engine) is the tool used
to search in PubMed
and MEDLINE
MEDLINE (database)
> 21 Million
Articles are
added to
PubMed by
publishers
MEDLINE and PubMed
PubMed
(database)
> 23 million
…then moved to
MEDLINE as they are
indexed (have MeSH
terms added) by
NLM
What is MeSH?
10
11. Most important single concept of today!!
A “dictionary” in which you look up the best
words to use in MEDLINE searches
Using MeSH in searches increases the number
of relevant articles
Limitations:
New concepts, procedures, drugs may not have a
MeSH term
▪ Use a Keyword (= any search term you choose that is not a
MeSH term)
Takes time for new articles to be “indexed” for
MEDLINE
▪ Can miss the newest articles

12. • Your patient is a healthy postmenopausal
woman who’s sister was diagnosed with breast
cancer in the past two years and is in remission.
She’s concerned with her own risk of breast
cancer, and has heard that exercise helps prevent
it in patients like her. Even though you routinely
recommend exercise to patients, you’d like to
know if there is evidence supporting this claim.
