The Battle of Hastings occurred on October 14, 1066 in East Sussex, England between King Harold Godwinson of England and William the Duke of Normandy. William won the battle for three key reasons: he had better preparation and readiness, including cavalry trained for battle; he had the element of surprise with his cavalry attacks; and he ordered his foot soldiers to feign retreat down a hill, drawing the English into disarray where they were defeated when surrounded at the bottom.
