Third, it's almost as if a coin could be flipped to make the decision, because, as (3) shows, the
choices are nearly identical. The person could have flipped a coin or do some other arbitrary
technique, but he decides to personally make the choice.
Fourth, I get a sense of regret about not being able to take the other road and also not being able
sometime in the future to go back and take the other road. This is logical I think because of the
similarity between the roads. This may be what "with a sigh" is referring to, since it is just one line
below the "doubted" line. I like this meaning because it kind of fits. In the future, he's still lamenting
that he hadn't been able to take the other road, which would have led to much a different result.
Fifth, when does this contemplation take place? Ages and ages hence. That is, when one is much
older and new choices are not available.
Putting this all together, there are many things a person could become: for example, go one way and
you might become a teacher; go another way and you might become a writer. Both are good things
to become and you can understandably wonder how things might have turned out, if you had made
that other choice. When you make the choice, at that time, you may not see a major difference
between the two options. But the choice that you made is decisive. It determines your future.

from a literary standpoint symbolism is definitely present in this poem and unquestionably
contributes to its greatness. A psychoanalytical school of criticism will be a good match for this
poem because the theme is very self centred around the one character and his thoughts. It is
suggested that the poem is about reflecting on the choices which are made in our lives. The
character in the poem is doing exactly that. If we turn on Robert Frost himself we can perhaps
draw even more answers as to why this poem came into being. It is documented that Frost had a
period in his life where he lived and worked on his farm and spent time everyday in composing
poems. Later on he abandoned the farming business and became a school teacher. At one point or
another he must have reflected on his life choices. This must have inspired the man to write the

To flip a gold coin is not always the route to go when faced with important decisions in life. In time,
the choice will have to be made, and the outcome can sometimes be life–changing. When making a
conscientious decision, one commits oneself to follow the right path. This fate presents itself in
Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" poem, and is present in the poetic piece of Blanche Farley's
"The Lover Not Taken." A large percentage of the stanzas in each poem harmonize each other, and
they both use similar words. For example, in the first stanza of each poem "and be one traveler,
long I stood" (Frost), and "and mulling it over, long she stood." (Blanche). Both lines are two peas
in a pod, and they are a five stanza poem that identically rhyme. Although both poems share many
similar aspects, the subject, irony, and hyperbole usage sets the adventurous action and familiar
atmosphere for these two poems. The subject of fate and making the right choice are written all
over these two corresponding poems. Frost's subject centers on the approach of deciding a
predetermined course in one's life. The narrator's path splits into two different directions, and a
decision has to be made on which way to go. Even though a wooded path exists, the path symbolizes

Analysis: The Road Not Taken
In "The Road Not Taken" the speaker stands in the woods trying to decide which road to take at a
fork in the path because both paths are filled with levees and brush. The speaker finally chooses one
path, telling himself that he will take the other path another day even though he knows that he might

no different, where in the first stanza we are ushered in with the use of anaphora in lines 2, 3 and 4
with the repetition of the word ''and''. This specific use of anaphora is used to create the mindset
and intelligible deduction of the traveller to the events and dilemma prescribed to him. Insofar as
his immediate reaction be being presented with a choice. It shows his reaction of regret in that he
is ''sorry he could not travel both'' and explains what he wish he could do ''be two travellers'' but also

W.H. Auden's The Average and Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken both consider the choices that
determine the rest of one's life. Auden explores this concept through a young man's search for a
better future while Frost conversely shows it through a reflection on a past decision. The parents of
Auden's protagonist 'killed themselves with toil' in order to grant him the opportunity to discover a
profession that 'encourages shallow breathing' which puts immense pressure on the speaker to find a

glar[ing] into his blood–shot eyes' he is without fear of physical danger and is instead focused
entirely on the notion of possible failure. Similarly, Frost's text carries this sense of fear, the fear
of regret, while Frost's protagonist does not explicitly wish to change his original path simply
stating 'that [it] had made all the difference' in the past he planned to 'ke[ep] the first for another
day' which indicates that he did intend to maintain his options yet eventually 'way leads on to way'.

Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Depression" by Lena Lopes, Aleena Frith, and Emilia
Lopes have different tones and imagery, but have similar overall meanings of each poem, which
make each poem unique in its own way. To begin with, the poems "The Road Not Taken" byRobert

Each of the tones in each poem have two different emotions. The Robert Frost poem has a
pleasant and overall happy tone, but the other poem has a depressed and empty feeling to it. In the
poem, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, it states, "Two roads diverged in a wood , and I– I
took the one less traveled by"(Frost 18–19). This shows that the poem was inspiration and positive
outcome came at the end of the poem. This poem compels readers to assume that it is negative
from the words that it uses but, it has a very positive tone at the ending of the poem. In addition,
in the poem "Depression" by Lena Lopes, Aleena Frith, and Emilia Lopes, it states, " To make it

This week, I had the opportunity to read some chapter of our class e–textbook, in particular, chapter
17. I have to admit that it was sort of complex, but interesting as well. The chapter started with some

"The Road Not Taken" is one of the simplest poems written by Robert Frost. It has 4 stanzas, with
5 lines each. The poem presents a crossroads at which the author finds himself. He concludes that
both roads are the same, with the same amount of fallen and untouched leaves. He, however,
chooses one because it seems better to him. He then proceeds on this path, telling himself he

second stanza where the author states that they are "just as fair" (Frost 6), which mirrors real life

Although most haven't read it in its entirety, Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken," is one of
the most popular American poems of the twentieth century. The story is often misremembered as the
tale of an adventurer who chooses the path where fewer have been. Frost begins his poem with
juxtaposing two roads diverging in a wood. He cannot see very far ahead on either path. The narrator
is a quintessential nonconformist when he, theoretically, "choose[s] the one less traveled by." (19)

The poetic techniques were symbolism, imagery, and tone. Symbolism is the most powerfully used
technique due to the fact a good number of lines located in this poem is used to signify a certain
object or idea related to our life or today's world. Imagery in the sense that you can visualize the
path, the yellow wood, the undergrowth, the divergence; it is all made very vivid. Frost did this
throughout; you know trying to stimulate the reader's mood using one's senses. In this poem,
imagery permits the reader to imagine the scene that this poem takes place in resulting in an
enhanced understanding of the theme. The tone Frost's work presents is an insecure attitude which
allows the theme to be brought out due to the fact the theme relates to a dilemma in one's life. These
techniques strongly aid in the revealing of this specific theme. The poem relates the problem of
decision–making that affects lives of individuals. The poet does not seem to regret the choice that he
has made. But, certainly he feels lonely. When there are several opportunities available, it often
becomes difficult to make the right choice. But, once a choice has been made one has to move ahead

My own Analysis of the poem "The Road Not Taken"
The poem "The Road Not Taken" is a piece of literature written by the American poet Robert Frost.
Its genre is poetry. It is considered poetry because of its structure. It has a distinct numbered group
of lines in verse normally called stanza.
The structure used in Robert Frost poem varies with different types of poetry and can be seen in the
structural elements that it includes the line, couplet, and stanza. It is a straight forward series of
five line stanzas and each stanza presents a single idea. Its form is a traditional poetry which is

It shows here how our decision would affect us in the later years. If I am twenty two now and
whatever road I take will probably impact my life as I reach thirty. "The Road Not Taken" reminds
us of the consequences of the principle of selection in all aspects of life, namely that all choices in
knowledge or in action exclude many others and lead to an ironic recognitions of our achievements.
There are three tenses of verbs used in the poem; the present, past, and future. The poem leads us to
travel from present, going to the past after the present situation and directing us to the future. It
started from a person who travels to take one road out of the two roads, going on to the experience
of 'what' when the road to take was chosen and directs us to 'what' of next afterwards.
In the final stanza, the use of the word 'shall' signals the change of tense to future, we hear a
different story, one that will be told "with a sigh" or one that will set out a deep audible breath of
weariness or sorrow and "ages and ages hence" which means sometime or somewhere a long time
later . At that imagined time and unspecified place, the voice will have nobly simplified and exalted

Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" describes a traveler faced with a choice of which one
of two roads to travel. He knows not where either road might lead. In order to continue on his
journey, he can pick only one road. He scrutinizes both roads for the possibilities of where they may
take him in his travels. Frost's traveler realizes that regret is inevitable. Regardless of his choice, he
knows that he will miss the experiences he might have encountered on the road not taken.
Images in the poem reflect the difficulties of the choice the traveler faces. The difficulty is shown in

He predicts that he will always remember this moment of choice and will be telling it "with a
sigh" (16) when he is old. His choice will have made "all the difference" (20) and affected his
whole journey. Frost creates a tone of inevitability that no matter what the choice, there will always
be regret.
Frost presents the traveler's choice of paths as a metaphor for the difficult decisions a person
must make in life. The divergent paths are the choices to be made at various points along the
way. Regardless of how he tries, the traveler cannot see beyond where the path is "bent in the
undergrowth" (5). Likewise, nobody can predict what effect one choice will have on his life. The
traveler sees the two paths as very similar or "just as fair" (6). As much as the traveler would like
to return to the diverging roads, he realizes that he will not get another chance to travel the other
path. With maturity comes a resignation that a choice has affected a person's life and there is no
going back. He also tries to make the best of his decision by saying that it has "made all the
difference." (20).
In "The Road Not Taken", images of the bright woods and wide open opportunity to choose are
contrasted with the indecision and regret of only being able to travel one path. Word choice and a
slight sorrowful tone reinforce the theme of regret. Frost presents divergent roads as a metaphor for

The Road Not Taken Robert Frost Introduction On the surface of it, "The Road Not Taken" by
Robert Frost presents a narrator who is remembering a journey through the woods, and the person
making this journey came into a position where two roads were diverging. So the challenge
presented in the poem is, which road should the narrator take, and why? Frost claimed that his
poem was a parody of a poem by his friend, poet Edward Thomas, but others have had very
different explanations for "The Road Not Taken." Thesis: "The Road Not Taken" is actually
about choices we make in life and the importance of making good choices along the say. As "The
Road Not Taken" begins there is regret expressed by the narrator that he can't travel on both of the
two roads. He also describes one of the two roads as far as he could see down that road and in the
second stanza it turns out the other road was "just as fair" and in fact may have been "the better
claim" because clearly not many people had been down that other road. That second road seem to
have "wanted wear" to the human eye, but by the time he started walking on that second road it
was apparent that others had been there and had " 安orn them really about the same." By
taking the second road he now sees (by the third stanza) that both of the roads were not heavily

The Road not Taken (Analysis) In my ninth grade, I came across Robert Frost's work of the Road
not Taken. Although I have been an avid reader of several other literary works such as Shakespeare,
Ernest Hemmingway, George Orwell, Joseph Conrad, Frost's work has been of great influence in my
life so far. In the book, the author combines creative and technical writing styles to bring forth the
understanding of how difficult situations could be challenging in making significant decisions (Frost
and Untermeyer 62). Additionally, the book is influencing in educating individuals on the need for
proper choices when making crucial decisions in life. From the onset, the author pits humans against
two different paths where they need to make difficult choices that are characteristic of presenting
dilemma. The character in the book chose to travel the road less used. However, Frost is keen not to
reveal to the audience whether the character made the right choice or not although the he
acknowledges that, the choice had a significant impact on the man's life.
Judging the book's title, one recognizes the presentation of the theme of nonconformity and

The person could have flipped a coin or do some other arbitrary technique, but he decides to personally make the choice. Fourth, I get a sense of regret about not being able to take the other road and also not being able sometime in the future to go back and take the other road. This is logical I think because of the similarity between the roads. This may be what "with a sigh" is referring to, since it is just one line below the "doubted" line.
