1. World Literature Class Analysis
My overall experience within the World Literature class was rather lackluster if I may say so. The
content that was shown within the class I found rather boring and did not have much reason to
teaching it. Although three sections that I had found interesting which was Beowulf, Asian
Literature and our independent novel study. They both held values and moral standards that were
in place to teach the reader. These were interesting and compiled. For the instance of all the other
stories or literature that we examined in class it was boring and did not do much for me.
Although I only skimmed those ones I could see that they seemed to be dragged out and tedious to
read. As for trips the took they were well planned and gave the class something to watch which is
expansive in the realm of forms of study. Although some of the text that provided the most of a
learning experience was "The Analects" written by Confucius where he said At fifteen I set my heart
upon learning. At thirty, I planted my feet firm upon the ground. At forty, I no longer suffered from
perplexities. At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile

One of the lessons taught within "The Hobbit" was "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean

intention of good morning. Because are you stating that it is good or rather you are having a good

World Literature Essay A young boy who tries to survive the Holocaust, a king who sleeps with
his mother and kills his father, and a brave man who is unable to reveal his love for a women,
these are the stories that three different books tell, written by authors coming from all over
Europe. These works of literature namely are "Night", "Oedipus the King" and "Cyrano de
Bergerac". All three of these stories appear to be rather dissimilar since they are written and take
place during time periods which lie thousands of years apart. "Oedipus the King" is a legendary
story which takes place hundreds before the birth of Christ and contrasting to this play are "Cyrano
de Bergerac" and "Night" which in comparison to Oedipus are new, since they...show more content...
Now both are able to express their love towards Roxane, nonetheless, Christian is the one who
profits the most from this relationship at first since he is the one who gets to be together with
Roxane because she thinks that Christian is the only part of the "romantic hero". However, when
Roxane tells Christian: "First loving your beautyВ…then your body and soul were
inseparateВ…now, I love your inner self above all else", Christian sees that she now actually
loves Cyrano and therefore his fears of not being loved return. Love is the second theme that is
present through out all three books, therefore also in "Night". In this memoir the relationship
between father and son plays a big role since they are the only members of the family that are still
alive and together. Therefore, the bond between the two is tight. In "Cyrano de Bergerac" love is
the major theme of the entire play since two of the main characters are fighting for the love of
Roxane. Cyrano, a distant cousin of Roxane, is one of them, however, he is disfigured by a
gigantic nose, but nonetheless he is a brilliant poet. His rival for Roxane's love is Christian, a
handsome noble man, who is not as eloquent as Cyrano and has trouble talking to women. None of
them could win her heart on his own and this why they

To one, the task of driving a car with a manual transmission appears easy on paper. Anyone who
has gone through the arduous process of learning this skill will state the contrary. This act ,
which seems to be a simple task of mindless movements of muscle memory, truly is a feat of
deftness and finesse. If you place a new driver behind the wheel, this already difficult task seems
impossible and daunting. For my seventeenth birthday, I got the one gift that I had desired for as
ever since I could say the word "car". Not only did I get just a car, I had gotten the automobile I had
always lusted after. In my driveway, a dark grey metallic Subaru WRX stood before me. Single
turbo four cylinder boxer engine, symmetrical all wheel drive, quad exhaust, it truly was the
perfect gateway into the vast world of high performance cars for a young enthusiast. I could not
have been happier. The irony was that I could not drive it yet . The car had a six speed manual

5. Essay On Importance Of Literature
The importance of literature on today's society
In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and
perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring
what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has
taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The
boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With
an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives
as it redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and
surpassing self–defining barriers.
As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond
literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature", emphasizes the importance of literature in our
education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they
mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully
ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a medium of developing critical thinking skills,
leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts
creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was
applied was in my

6. Importance Of Literature Essay
Literature itself is one of the most important courses throughout high school because it consists of
various methods and techniques that can further expand knowledge. The main purpose of literature
is to serve as an introduction to a new world of experience, in other words to deliver essential
context that can be used as a positive advantage. Literature involves a wide range of lessons with
certain degrees of importance, as it enhances the outlooks one may have, build essential skills, and
creates appreciation towards different cultures and beliefs. Hence creating the image that literature is
the gateway to education due to the fact that it is a necessity in every career and educational field. In

It is evident that literature strengthens perspectives and point of views on the real world.
Additionally, it helps build critical thinking and writing skills. Thinking and writing are both
procedures of the mind, one generates thoughts and the other is a way to portray them, both are
vital forms of literature. Literature provides new and valuable techniques that can heavily influence
these skills for the better. Throughout the 4 years of literature in highschool we are able to
establish ways to develop themes, locate symbols, make connections, and evaluate characters;
methods such as PACTSO and REBOC are incorporated to simplify the process. Reading expands
thinking skills because while reading a piece of text or a novel, helps develop a larger sense of detail
to be understood. "The interpretation of literary texts requires you to deal with uncertainties, value
judgements, and emotions, these are unavoidable aspects of life" (Meyer 2), portraying that
literature challenges the mind to think realistically in situations by using a vast index of
methods.tggt Writing is another skill that is improved within literature since new

7. How Literature Impacts Society Essay
How Literature Impacts Society
Literature has been crucial to communities since language was tailored and used by people as a
form of communication. Literature takes the reader out of their world and brings them into the
author's world. It makes people think outside their normal box if you will. Literature can bring
people of different backgrounds, cultures, and ways life together. When people relate through a
piece of literature, it really makes you think that you're not alone and that someone else has been
through what you are going through. The way authors are able to grab you with how the characters
are feeling or what they are looking at brings the reader into that story. If you read a piece of
literature that contains information...show more content...
But in the story most memorable part is the fact that this man before he changed into a huge
insect was such a good person. He cared for his family and had such an enormous heart for them.
He worked hard every day so that his family could have a better life. He paid off his parent's debt
and the irony of the story is when he turned into an insect his family disowned him. They
mistreated him and all they care about was how the bills were going to get paid. Even though this
piece of literature is very dream like the main idea of this man being a workhorse for his family
and finally when he needed them the most they disowned him. Readers of all societies can relate
to how the main character felt. It's very difficult as a person to understand how other people live
their lives or why they do the things they do. Through literature authors make that possible for a
reader to truly experience what another person is feeling and thinking. We as readers can travel
back in time to see how societies were or we can travel around the world to see how people live in
different parts of the world without leaving the comfort of our own homes through literature.
Through literature we are able to gain knowledge and use it to better our own society.

8. Themes Of Love And Freedom In World Literature
Love and freedom! Where do Love and Freedom show up in the same place? They come together
as themes in World Literature. World Literature is the diverse variety of genres in books that have
been spread worldwide and have become well known. It is important to know about these two
themes to share and understand everyone's unique perspectives. The large collection of striking
viewpoints creates many diverse and intriguing themes. Two of the biggest themes that can be found
in books are Love and Freedom. The theme Love, has many different variations such as fake love,
necessary love, lost love, and etc. Love is generally described as a feeling of affection towards
someone or something. This can differ from book to book. Freedom is another...show more content...
The theme of Love fits into World Literature because of how it is shown throughout all different
types of books.
Another theme that is in World Literature is Freedom. This theme comes up in both "Night" and
"A Doll's House" in different ways. In "Night", Eliezer is rescued from the malicious Germans by
American forces. This is called literal freedom, because Eliezer is freed from the main struggle
physically, but will never be able to recover/escape mentally. In the book, "A Doll's House", Nora
is released from her "fake" marriage with Torvald since she is no longer treated like she is under
him, let alone feel like she is trapped in a relationship with him. This is called emotional freedom,
because she was originally trapped in the state of mind that she was only a household wife, until she
was, finally, able to be free of that mind set. Each book helps depict how the theme, Freedom, fits
into World Literature, even though many diverse books have the theme in a different way.
"Old Yeller" by Fred Gibson shows the themes of Love and Freedom. Each book is different than
one another, whether it is distinct, from the rest of the books, by storyline, genre, details, etc. Yet,
in each book, Freedom and Love both come up. In "Old Yeller" the theme of Love is shown by how
Travis, the protagonist, and Old Yeller care for and watch over each other. Love can be seen when
Travis suspects that Old Yeller has rabies and has to kill his loyal

9. The Meaning Of Freedom In World Literature
People can use World Literature in lots of ways but it is really used for is to get better at writing
and to get better at critical thinking. The meaning to World Literature is a body of work written
from lots of nations and known as literature throughout the world. People can use freedom in
many ways in world literature and especially in books. The meaning of freedom is the power to
act, to speak and to do anything he or she would like to do without anyone or anything stopping
them. There is many types of freedoms in world literature starting with good freedom. Good
freedom is something he or she would like to do and do it whenever he or she want but good
freedom can also be having hope that something good will happen or that he or she can finally do
something or a whole community can not do some day. Evidence of good freedom on the book
Night "At six o'clock that night, American tanks are at the door or Buchenwald"(Wiesel 115).
"OUR FIRST ACT AS FREE MEN was to throw ourselves onto the provisions. That is all we
thought about. No thought of revenge,or parents. Only of bread"(Wiesel 115). This evidence is an
example of good freedom because the American army finally came to help them and now the
people are freemen, free women, free children and now they are full of happiness that it is finally
over and that they can do what they want and finally eat and drink when they want and get their life
back together. They did not want revenge because they are free now from

10. What Is Literature? Essay
Since the 18th century, the definition of the concept "literature" has become a problematic and a
controversial issue among various literary schools. What is literature? What are the qualities that
distinguish a literary text from a non–literary one? Does literature have any particular function in
society? These are some crucial questions whose answers were supposed to limit and define the
scope of "literature". However, various literary and critical schools have advanced different and
contradictory responses to these same questions, which have consequently led to a failure in
producing an authoritatively established definition of "literature". This failure can be ascribed to
many reasons, but because the length of the paper doesn't...show more content...
This new sense, which was ascribed to the development of printing, was "a specialization В… to
the printed word and especially the printed books with certain quality [imaginative works]"
(Williams, 46). To elaborate on this definition, R. Wellek and A. Warren have stated that "in all of
them [the printed books with certain quality], the reference is to the world of fiction, of
imagination" (Wellek and Warren, Theory of Literature, 25). However, a simple review of the
history of prose narrative forms would show that this definition of literature as a category of
fictional and imaginative writings is irrelevant. Many writings which were written as
anthropological documentaries were making use of fiction, while many other fictional works were
given the status of documentary and factual writings. All travelogue writings and western
historiography between the middle ages and the twentieth century are good examples to illustrate
this point. Works like T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, W.M. Thackeray's From Cornhill
to Cairo, Kingslake's Eothen, and Sir Thomas More's Utopia made use of both fact and fiction.
Moreover, at the time of their appearance, most of these works were conceived of by the western
audience as factual and documentary writings. Later on, due to some historical and political changes
in the world, these writings became conceived of as fictional and imaginary works.

11. The Modern Era And Its Impact On The World
The Modern period is a cultural movement that has a lasting impact on the world. The Romantic
period provoked everyone to rebellion and two of the greatest revolutions, the American and French,
were an outcome of that period. Thus, the Modern period was born when the Romantics faded out
and this shift in culture changed the world forever. Modernism changed the way people lived in a
number of different reasons, but there are three that stood out from the rest. The Modern Era
changed the world through literature, producing some of the greatest works in history, through
technology and science, this new scientific movement invented groundbreaking technology, and
lastly through wars, people realized that being ruled by one all–powerful monarchy is not the way
they want to live. A lot of credit can go to the Enlightenment and Romantic periods, but the Modern
period shaped the world so radically that it would not be the same without it. The Modern period in
literature took an unexpected turn. In the past, literature had a traditional flow to it. The Romantics
somewhat broke away from this traditional form, but Modern literature completely broke off from
the old fashion way of viewing and interpreting the world. According to an article Modernism, the
author states "Experimentation and individualism became virtues, where in the past they were often
heartily discouraged." At first, the literature of this time was a push back against the Victorian
culture, which was the main way of

12. Literature : The 21st Century
Connections – 21st Literature
The 21st Century, the time period that we all live in today, smothered in continuous social,
economic and political issues. An interesting era for films of this genre is the late 1930's to early
1940's which we see reflections in the literature today. War World 2 was a turning point in history
and was a time of sheer horror in many places such as Spain, Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe.
In today's age, contemporary literature writers often draw their inspiration and ideas from the
writers that have gone before them. As a result, many works of 21st literature face the events and
movements from the past in order for them to make sense of the present. The two connections that
are very apparent in all four of my texts are power and control and the theme of hope. The way that
each of these connections have been linked throughout the late 1930's time period based texts show
how important they are into understanding what is still happening in the 21st century. The texts that I
have chosen to study are "The Book Thief", "Pan's Labyrinth", "The Pianist" and "Defiance". The
reason I have chosen to study these are to shed light onto why 21st century literature quite often
seem to take ideas from the past to help make sense for the future as "you have to know the past to
understand the present."
As stated by James Meade "In the 1930's one was aware of two great evils – mass unemployment
and the threat of war." The late 1930's was a time of war, a

13. Arianna Dagnino in her essay Transcultural Literature and Contemporary World Literature points out
that "with the denationalizing wave of globalization, even national literatures are under pressure to
find new arrangements of form and content to adapt to a changed cultural and social paradigm. In
other words, a mutation is under way within the global acumen of letters where new notions of
belonging, as well as definitions of selfhood and identity are externalized through new creative
artistic and literary processes. Within this emerging social, cultural, and literary scenario, scholars
feel the urge to identify new relevant literary paradigms, especially when dealing with the so–called
"New Literatures in English" represented by the works of, say, Zadie Smith, Hanif Kureishi, Kamila

borrowing of motifs from western canonised literature and its gradual popularity as an emerging
form of literary creativity.

characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action–filled plots often with
fantastic or futuristic themes." While Oxford Dictionary dictates anime as "A style of Japanese film
and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children", the Urban Dictionary
explains anime as "a style of animation that originated and is still heavily centered in

What is Literature?
Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering
on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes
songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things
that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones
that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature
seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would
directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content...
Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the
culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then
they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining
literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable.
Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But
then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain
work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a
literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be
expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a
whole.
Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of
literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is,
counter arguments also rise.
Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in
every individual's life. One can influence using literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these
are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El

The symbolism of Blood and Water in the play "Blood Wedding"
The two word title of the play "Blood Wedding" by Frederico Garcia
Lorca presents both a contradiction and a concurrence. These themes continue throughout the play,
and the two words of the title are used to capture the essence of the contrasting movements of its
action. The wedding symbolises the harmony of man and woman, and the continuation of life. Blood
too symbolises these things, however it also evokes contrasting feelings of violence, death and
destruction. Blood represents the strength of the blood ties in families, and promotes the sense of
repeating history which is evident throughout the play, as well as fertility and...show more content...
She is very interested to know what the girl's mother is like, and we learn from the neighbour that
"she was very proud"[2], and that "she never loved her husband"[3]. This knowledge gives the
audience a sense of foreboding for the repetition of past events. We know that the mother's interest
in the bride's mother stems from her belief that this blood relationship will show her what the girl
is like. If we accept this point of view, we believe that history may repeat itself, and with the
bridegroom already linked by his blood to murder and killing doom seems inevitable.
Even the wife of Leonardo is a victim of the repetition of family history. Before Leonardo runs
away with the bride, the wife suspects that he will not remain faithful, and referring to his lack of
loyalty to her she says "it happened to my mother, now it is happening to me"[4].
So there are four characters in the play who are afflicted by the history of their ancestors. The
bride's mother never loved her husband, the bridegroom's father and older brother were both
murdered by members of the Felix family, Leonardo's ancestors murdered members of the
bridegroom's family, and the mother of Leonardo's wife was also deserted by her husband. All of
these links clearly show the importance of the blood line and the blood relationship in families
which is a constant theme throughout the play, while also creating a strong sense of the inevitability

World literature is not exactly something that can be defined in one sentence. It has been given
multiple meanings by many different authors and people throughout the years. A very brief way to
describe the meaning of world literature is literature that circulates elsewhere around the world
rather than in its own origin or hometown. Some common examples of world literature are Moby
Dick by Herman Melville, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and Pride and Prejudice by Jane
Austen. World literature is important for today's students to read for a glimpse into the lifestyle of
the author's portion and perspective of the world and to create realistic and factual mindsets of
different parts of the world.
Students in today's world should be exposed to world literature for a peek into the life and
perspective surrounding area that the author or character is being exposed to. "When reading about
civil war, the ability to share the fears and victories of the battlefield firsthand through a character's
experiences there helps students to understand the internal and external conflicts he/she faces. When
these experiences transcend time and geography to illustrate similar uncertainties, students see and
experience these situations as if firsthand" (Breitman). Students who read world literature get a
personal insight into the thought process of the author or main character who may be going through
some tough times or is experiencing events or traditions that only occur in his/her

Hence, with youth blindly following patriotism without giving war a thought, combined with new

the invention of new technology, mankind was forced to approach war in a different perspective,

of life for many, but at the same time, has interfered with one's privacy and safety. With the invention
of the automatic machine gun, soldiers were forced to abandon the "gentlemanly" strategy of
forming a neat line and firing at the enemy based on the commander's word (Barron). With soldiers
utilizing technological advancements during World War Ieffectively, men were killed rapidly and
efficiently in a dispassionate manner by their enemy. Thus, soldiers were forced to lead with instincts
rather than feelings in order to survive on the battlefield. Not to mention, with the shift in tactics for
fighting the war due to inventions such as poisonous gas, bombs, and tanks, the severity of war was
intensified leading to soldiers acting like " [beasts to] defend [themselves] against annihilation"
