GOVERNING BODY
All India Football Federation, popularly known as AIFF is the governing body of
Football in India. It was formed in 1937. AIFF is affiliated with FIFA, the
international governing body for football.

EARLY DAYS
• Introduced during mid 19th century by British soldiers
• First recorded football match was in 1854 between ‘Calcutta Club of
Civilian’ and ‘The Gentlemen of Barrackpore’
• Most of the clubs during early days were based in Kolkatta
• Calcutta FC is credited as the first club in India
• The legendary Mohun Bagan AC came into being in 1889

EARLY DAYS
• Durand Cup, the 3rd oldest surviving tournament in the world was started
by Sir Mortimer Durand in Shimla in 1898
• On 29th July 1911, Mohan Bagan AC defeated the East Yorkshire in the
final of IFA shield. They were the first Indian team to do so
• Eventually, AIFF was formed in 1937 and got its affiliation from
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in 1948
• First International game was played against France on July 31st, 1948, in
which they lost the match
