Study Habits Can Improve Your Grades Essay
Why improving your study habits can improve your grades
Having bad study habits can really show up in your grades, but if you change your study habits
your grades will improve. Many important things factor in understanding about studying. The
most important fact about studying: no two people think alike; therefore, no two people study the
same. What works for you may not work for your friend, and vice versa. I know I have no class
that I enjoy so much that I cannot wait to get home so that I can study it, on that note we can only
wish. As people we are all different for some students studying and being motivated to learn comes
naturally but for me not so much. Success in high school and college really depend on good study
habits....show more content...
That could benefit or hurt your study habits and note taking. Also bad study habits could result in not
knowing how to study. Studying is not just reading out loud it's about comprehending what you read.
Ask yourself questions, write about what you read, or tell someone what you read. Doing so can
improve your memory of what you read up to 85% instead of just 15%. You can also survey what
you are about to read. Surveying is essentially understands what you are reading. Basically you can
study something you don't understand. Question what you have just read, ask yourself questions
about what you are reading or studying. Always pay attention to things in bold or italicized print.
Recite what you have just read, this makes it stick better. Try to remember the headings and
important ideas, try to say what you have just read in your own words this way you understand it
better, therefore you remember it without actually trying. When you study, reading out loud does
not help you study, and if you move your lips while reading you are not reading efficiently. Not
knowing when to study affects you just as much as not knowing how to study. You don't
necessarily have to study the day you get your notes but that does not mean to wait till the day of
the test to study either. Reading over your notes daily really helps your memory. A very important
note about studying is to only study when you are well rested, and have already planned for it. This

15 Steps To Change A Habit Essay
Changing a habit would be the most challenging task, as it would never going to happen in one day
or a week. Habit changes take a lot of time and energy.

What Is The Power Of Habit Essay
We are creatures of habit. Whether they are good or bad, habits shape our actions and help us get
through our days. As Charles Duhigg describes in his book, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What
We Do in Life and Business, habits "emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save
effort." They are routines that automate parts of our behavior. Habits can be so firmly ingrained into
our neural networks that we aren't actually conscious of them, and we don't need to put much
thought to follow through them.
Duhigg explains how habits work through a "loop": there is a cue, which triggers a habit. Then
there is a routine, which is the automatic behavior. Lastly, there is a reward which will determine
your desire to keep the habit. This...show more content...
The biggest tip Duhigg offers in his book is that in order to break a habit and establish new ones,
you must analyze your habit loop. Think about the routine that you want to change, identify your
cues, try to figure out what cravings are driving your routine, and make a plan for yourself to
change that routine. After reading this book, I tried to think about my habit loop. The routine I
wanted to change was going on Netflix to procrastinate. I noticed the cue to this routine was
coming home after a long day at school, because I would immediately go on Netflix as soon as I
arrived home. I then realized I did this, not because I was too lazy to do my homework, but
because I was craving for an outlet to destress after a long day at school. So now, I try to think of
different ways to destress that do not affect my sleep or productivity. I can take a shower, I can
exercise, maybe I can talk to a good friend before starting my homework. Sometimes does not
work and I still find myself going back to binge watching shows on Netflix to procrastinate, but
now that I know what drives this habit and what I can do to help myself, I can say that I am making
progress in breaking this

Bad Habits, By Ann M. Graybiel And Kyle S. Smith
The article "Good Habits, Bad Habits", written by Ann M. Graybiel and Kyle S. Smith, indulges
in the idea that in every task we preform, our mind use one of two ways. The first way is the
mindless way. This approach is where we do tasks without thinking. We use this technique almost
everyday. For example, when a person takes the same route to his or her job everyday, they are
using this process of thinking. The second technique is considered the "deliberation circuit" by
Graybiel and Smith. This procedure is the opposite of the first. It involves some sort of decision
making to take place, before an action can carried out.
The mindless technique is how habits are formed. To coherently understand this, we must first take
an in depth look at...show more content...
In an experiment conducted by Wolfram Schultz and Ranulfo Romo, rats were given a two
choices, and each choice was triggered by an instructional tone. In the initial tests, the rats would
be taught where to go after each tone; consequently, they would be rewarded if they went to the
right area after the corresponding tone went off. Eventually, the rats began to develop a habit of
going to the area that the tone signaled, and receiving their reward (Graybiel & Smith 41). A habit
was created because of the treat they were given; this is an example of positive reinforcement. In
this case food was used as a positive reinforcement; however, there are a variety of options that can
be considered a positive reinforcement. There are certain guidelines these reinforcements must
abide to, such as they must be something that is pleasurable rather than a basic necessity. If I was
going to use food, then it would have to be something like cookies, chips, or anything else appealing
(Kazdin 159). In my case, positive reinforcements would be put in action when I go beyond the
three–hour limit when studying my notes. Negative reinforcement would be applied when I do less
than the required three hours, or I took less than five

The Importance Of Food Habits
Food habits is about what food we eat, how we eat and why we eat it, depending of several factors
linked to establish patterns and different manners across cultures. On the other hand, dietary
behaviors are generally associated with dietary patterns related to selecting low–fat diets, which are
not always related to good eating habits. With this in mind, people who make any kind of low fat
diet, should be aware in when their eating habits and their dietary behavior are working in the same
way to have a healthier nutrition and when not.
The way the how humans use food and how the food is selected, obtained and spread to who
prepare it, define their Food Habits. People often are flexible to live in many locations even when
they have to adapted to other cultures with different food habits, which has caused a multiplicity
of food habits in diverse groups of people, whether of different or equal cultures, religions or
countries their belong. (Sentence too long.) For example, the Mediterranean diet is abundant in
vegetables, chickpeas, lentils and legumes, as well as fresh herbs. Traditional dishes use lean
meats such as fish and chicken, over heavier red meats which can be higher in saturated fat. People
in France also rarely eat fast food and highly processed foods from supermarkets, which are often
high in calories and low in nutrition. Traditional Japanese food, such as sushi, is low in saturated
fats, high in fiber and packed with vitamins, minerals and omega–3s from the fresh fish. The
nutritious staple of rice is filling, while tofu and seaweed are full of protein. Seaweed is also rich in
zinc, antioxidants and vitamins A and C.
Eating Habits in The United States can vary from coast to coast. To give an illustration of what that
means, let's talk about Midwest Region, West region, East region and South region.
The Midwest is the region where people eat more beef and corn people in Unite States, "Three of the
top five beef–producing states–Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma–are in the Midwest. And all 10 of
the top corn–producing states are located in the Midwest, with #1 being Iowa" (Meagan Morris,
"15 Regional Eating Habits in the U.S."). Ranch dressing is also very popular along the Midwest
region, serving

Developing Good Work Habits
During the early school years, students must begin to develop good work habits including preparing
for schoolwork, organizing time and effort, and developing effective study skills. As students
continue into middle school and high school their success depends, to a large degree, on refining
and sustaining these work habits. Time management, organizational skills, and efficient study skills
become especially important by this stage. Students who are able to develop and maintain good
work habits are in a position to succeed – to learn what needs to be learned, and to become confident
students.
Getting started on assignments in school and at home requires students to engage their attentional
abilities. Students must be alert to the task at...show more content...
The ability to manage one's effort is closely linked to academic productivity and success.
A strong capacity for work enables students to delay gratification and to persevere through tasks that
take considerable energy. It also helps them sustain their effort when information is worthy of
attention, even though not immediately exciting, such as when studying a chapter they will be
tested on the next day, or reading the instructions for a science experiment.
Developing good organizational behaviors can play a key role in efficient school performance.
School is much easier for students who know how to organize themselves, their materials, and their
work space. Having effective organizational tactics will continue to be a valuable asset throughout a
student's education and career.
Being ready to learn often means being prepared for the next activity, having to shift gears from one
task to another, and having all the necessary materials on hand. In order to develop this aspect of
learning readiness, students must engage their attentional abilities (especially that of previewing), as
well as their memory skills.
Through previewing, a student is able to look ahead and be prepared to deal with upcoming
circumstances, challenges, and academic tasks. For example, previewing helps students prepare for
a test, get ready for an upcoming class, and smoothly transition from one activity to the next. In
addition, students who preview are able to determine which

Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People Essay
THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was written by Stephen R. Covey in 1989. This book has
been on the National Best Seller list for over 200 weeks. Many people have attended Covey's
seminars on the subject. Many companies have required top executives to read this book including
AT & T,Dow Chemical, Ford, Deloitte and Touche, Marriott, Xerox and Ritz Carlton Hotels.
This book proposes that there are seven habits that can be learned to improve one's personal and
interpersonal effectiveness. Covey describes a habit as "the intersection of knowledge, skill and
desire." Knowledge would represent the "what to do", skill the "how to do", and desire the
"want to do". In order to create...show more content...
"Think Win/Win" is the fourth of Covey's habits. This habit requires a four step process:
1. See the problem from the other point of view.
2. Identify the key issues and concerns (not positions) involved.
3. Determine what results would constitute a fully acceptable solution.
4. Identify possible new options to achieve those results.
This frame of mind is based on cooperation rather than competition. We must have the courage to
state our convictions, but to take into consideration other's convictions.
"Seek first to understand then to be understood" is the fifth habit. Covey suggests that we "diagnose
before we prescribe in communication". That is we need to understand the situation before rushing
in with our prescription of advise. Seeking to understand requires consideration, communication and
listening skills. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to
reply. There are five levels of listening. We may be ignoring the other person, not listening at all. We
may practice pretending by just responding by nodding our head or saying "Yeah. Uh–Huh. Right."
Another level is selective listening which is hearing only certain parts of the conversation. The fourth

Exercise and eating healthy are two of the most important things you need to do to take care of your
body properly. Both exercise, and eating healthy, have many advantages and benefits. They help with
multiple things needed throughout your life. These things include growing physically, mentally, and
if you are religious, spiritually as well. All of this adds up to your body functioning in the highest
and best way possible. Exercise, or physical activity helps your body in many ways. For example,
exercise helps control the weight of a human. It helps prevent people gaining unwanted weight and
helps people who have unwanted weight to lose it. (mayoclinic.com) When we eat, we are taking in

This is what causes us to be sore. The muscles then build back up, becoming stronger than before.
(lifehacker.com) People still need to be careful when they exercise because they can hurt themselves
or overexert themselves while doing it. Being a little sore for a 24–48 hour period is normal but
when being sore is a severe pain, it was probably caused by overexertion. (lifehacker.com)
For people who want to lose weight when they exercise they need to take a completely different
approach. Instead of doing high–intensity workout for short periods of time, they need to do the
exact opposite. Brian Parr from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University
of South Carolina says: "When you exercise for a longer duration, you're going to use the slow
twitch fibers that are really good at burning fat. If you went and did a couple hundred meter sprints
for your workout, it only works the fast muscle fibers, and they use primarily carbohydrates and don't
burn that much fat at all.
For example, when you get on an elliptical or treadmill you can push the "fat burning" button, it
will be longer and lower intensity because that favors the muscles that are going to burn more fat.
So if you do a jog instead of a sprint, you're burning more fat." (lifehacker.com)
Even through all of this you need to have some variety because some exercises just burn the fat in

Habits are Powerful.
I have many different habits. Some good although some are not so good. A few habits are my
schoolwork habits, relating to friends, deciding on what to wear, what to eat, what music I listen
to, and a few that's personal. All of these, good and bad. These habits of mine all impact my life
one way or another. My habits are powerful, and have helped shaped my life into the way that it is
today. Some habits are very powerful to where they can take over your life completely.
Fortunately for me, that's not my case. First off my schoolwork habits. My schoolwork habits are
kind of good. So far they've been pretty good, and working very well for me, because I'm a freshman
in college. However as of now they have to change. The things I've done in my previous years for
my schoolwork just won't get me by anymore. College is a whole new ball game. I have never had
or developed a study habit or good study habit like other kids. I always felt I was too good to study
or I never tried to fit studying into my time of day. I was never that kid to go home and study for 2
hours straight. I couldn't understand how people read over school notes for 2 hours straight at
home. I've felt school work should be done at school. I only studied if I was forced by my mom,
when I was younger of course. Otherwise if I knew I had a test or quiz coming up the day before I
would study some. I would

7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens Essay
Over the summer, I read a book titled, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Convey.
The seven habits described in this book were being proactive, Beginning with the end in mind, put
first things first, think win–win, seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize, and
sharpen the saw. The first habit Being proactive means not to make choices on impulse. it means
to evaluate the situation before making a desicion. for example, two years ago when i had
friends that talked behind my back i just moved on and found better friends rather than be mean
to them or excluding them out of my way. The second habit Beginning with the end in mind
means to think ahead at what your goals are and start working towards them. My goal for the

goal i worked hard through the year on assignments and and sometimes did more than what was

Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
In 1989, Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People started a landmark
revolution in how we think about time and life management. In this book, Covey presents seven
principles for developing effectiveness in our private and public lives. By developing these habits,
one moves from being dependent on other people to being and acting independently. Then we learn
how to move to the more advanced state of interdependence and successful Cooperation. As a part of
the seven habits. Covey introduces important and powerful techniques of time management under

The last habit ( Sharpening The Saw) encompasses all the others and ensures we engage in
activities of personal renewal so that we can maintain our PC abilities! With these concepts as a
background, we are now ready to review the habits.
Habit 1 : Be Proactive. The Habit of Personal Vision. According to Covey, this habit reflects our
innate ability to take charge of our lives. We are not simply products of in–grained stimulus–
response reflexes. We have the ability to take charge, plan ahead, and focus our energies on things
we can control instead of reacting to or worrying about things over which we have little or no
control. This habit allows us to rise above the ebbs and flows of the tides of our day–to–day lives
and direct our lives.
Habit 2 : Begin With the End in Mind. The habit of personal leadership. In this habit, we begin
each day, week, project, etc. with a clear vision of our direction and destination. This habit
inculcates the ability to create our desired results mentally first in accordance to our guiding
principles, and then maintain this vision throughout our daily activities. Part of the process of
developing this habit is to develop a personal mission statement, philosophy, or creed. This mission
statement focus on what you want to be and do. Your planning activities then can always be refer
back to this mission statement so you can maintain a proper perspective on where you are headed
and how you hope to get there. This

The Power of Habit
First off, we are creatures. We are animals. We're very sophisticated and good–looking and all that,
but let's never forget that we're made of flesh and blood. In particular, our brains are incredibly
complex evolved machines. Our brains govern basic processes such as breathing and food intake,
and also enable us to appreciate the finer points of John Cleese's performances in Fawlty Towers.
As creatures, we have needs. We need to eat, and so we eat. As rather intelligent and social
creatures, we like to chat with one another, and so we do. We take turns and finish our
conversations gracefully. And there are dozens and dozens more behaviors that are just as
complicated, if not more so. How on Earth do we get all of this done?
That's where...show more content...
No writer feels like he is writing enough. We all watch too much television, spend too much time on
Facebook, or waste our writing time doing other things. For beginning writers, the problem is
especially acute. With no editor giving a deadline, no fans clamoring for the next installment, and no
writing income, there is literally no incentive to write–at least not consistently. Beginners might
write when they are "inspired," but with so many other things pulling them away from the writing
desk, how can they stick with it for the months and years it takes to carve out a writing career?
On the other hand, most professional writers write every day. Not because they are inspired more
often, not because they have more free time, and not because they are neglecting other parts of their
lives. Pros write every day for one simple yet powerful reason. They've made it a habit.
We tend to think of habits as bad (smoking, cussing, biting your fingernails) but they can also be
good (walking the dog, oatmeal for breakfast, a weekly date with your spouse). THE POWER OF
HABIT shows how easily habits form. They rely on three simple things–a cue, a routine, and a
reward–and don't take long to stick. Our brains love habits. They allow us to be efficient. They help
us do things like drive a car without constant self–monitoring. Once we learn where the brake pedal
is and how hard to press the

THE HIDDEN AGENCY OF HABITS
Before we dive into the nitty–gritty of "small habits" and how they can make your goals easier to
achieve, it's important to understand the presence and sheer power of habits in our every–day lives.
Many of the things we do on a daily basis–stopping for coffee before work, reading the newspaper,
taking a shower, exercising, watching TV, having a snack–are habits that have been so programmed
in our neurological pathways that we don't even know they exist. We move through our day like a
plane on autopilot, automatically responding to the happenings of daily life based on the habits
we've learned over time.
There's a short anecdote from American author David Foster Wallacethat illustrates this idea rather
nicely. During his commencement speech at Kenyon College, the late Wallace said:...show more

The water is so much a part of their every–day reality that it goes unnoticed–or, as Wallace
mentioned later in his speech, is "hidden in plain sight all around."
Human habits can be explained in much the same way. Although typically unseen and unnoticed by
us, our habits are powerful enough to impact our decision–making and drive our daily activities. In
fact, Duke University researchers found that over 40% "of our actions are unconscious habits." It is
this idea that validates the saying "old habits die hard" and often makes new habits exceedingly
difficult to establish.
So should you stop trying?

Eight Habits Of Mind Essay
The Eight Habits of Mind are traits supposedly needed in order to be successful in school and life –
eight characteristics that are essential in order to achieve your goals. The first trait is curiosity – a
characteristic that I definitely have. Part of being a teenager is struggling with your identity and
pondering your purpose. Questions that I find thinking about often is what is the meaning of
life? Does a God really exist? How can humans have the potential to be so evil and yet be peaceful
and kind? Are we trapped by a predestined fate, or are we solely responsible for what happens in
our lives? Does everything happen for a reason? How can there be so much wealth and yet so
much poverty in the world? I wish I knew the answers to these questions. (Humans have a tendency

I think I fall somewhere in the middle on this topic. I am set in my ways but I want to experience
news things. I know what is important to me, and what I like and don't like. These are the things
that feel real to me. A different way of being or thinking seems like it exists only on another
planet, like it is so far away from me, because all I've ever experienced is my own way of living. I
am pretty stubborn too, and unless I am looking to change an aspect of my life, I typically won't
consider a new way. I can also be pretty judgmental, which makes me less open too. I think the
best way to practice being more open is to try new things or to travel to another country and
immerse yourself in a different culture. In my opinion, the third trait of engagement is closely
related to curiosity. Like I said earlier, if you are curious about something, you are involved and
excited to learn more. I am engaged when learning about something interesting. Engagement is
important, because without it, you will soon find yourself falling asleep when your math teacher is

Breaking or Changing Bad Habits
A habit, by definition, is an act which is repeated by a person without the individual even being
aware that they continuously display a certain behavior. There are many bad habits a person can
develop over time including; drug habits, eating disorders, and many other undesirable behaviors.
These habits can all be broken to result in positive outcomes. Many of habits considered to be bad
require a person to make specific changes in their life in order to conquer the habit in question. There
are a plethora of different steps and/or tasks that can be used to assist a person in breaking an
unwanted habit.
One of the first steps that must be completed by a person wishing to end a detrimental habit is
becoming aware of their situation. In some instances, this requires the person in question to admit to
themselves that they exhibit problematic behavior. This act of admitting to one's self that they
repeat negative acts or thoughts is essential to the elimination of their habits. With this in mind, you
have to be aware of an issue before it can be resolved. Knowing the habit is present and affecting
your life in a negative fashion is a very important step within this process.
Many people have different things in their lives that they would like to change. A step that could be
used to determine which habit to change first in their life would be to prioritize. Prioritizing is
something you can do in order to weigh the pros and cons of a situation and figure out which habit

How to Be A Good Student Essay
How to Be A Good Student
To become a success in life, we all need to learn to become a good student in every aspect of life.
Becoming a good student takes much work and self–discipline. There are many ways that a student
can stand out from the rest of the class. These good students are distinguished by their attitude,
intellectual skills, consciousness, and achievement.
Attitude is primarily a genuine desire to learn and the will to do hard academic work to achieve

Habits of Ultra Successful People
To be successful on a personal and professional level, it is necessary to build personal
independence. This goal, in the chaotic everyday life, we can get if we change ourselves. Here are
some suggestions that can help.
In recent decades, the world has changed dramatically. The life of modern people has become
uncertain, fast and unsafe. Everyday life is becoming more and more complex, stressful and
demanding.
In response to current events are often noticeable different dysfunctional extremes: we see
individuals who are working hard until the moment when the health or families begin to be pulled
down, while on the other hand, a large number of people is giving up and withdraws, playing the
role of the victim, "Just if... the boss is different... I wish I was not born so poor... to live in another
country... that partner has more understanding for me... ". We may be able to blame everything and
everyone for our problems and that might bring us temporary relief, but that will also bind us tightly
to our own problems.

snatched the picture of the globe from the newspaper and tore it up into small pieces. "Here you go
son, attempt to put together the image of the world," he said, hoping that this will occupy the boy
long enough that he can finish reading the newspaper. To his amazement, after only five minutes,
the son returned with a perfect assembled picture of a globe. When the astonished father asked him
how he achieved this, the son said: "Dad, on the other side of the image was the image of a man. It
is easier and faster to put together a man. And when I assembled the man, and the world was all right

Essay On Good Habits

  • 1. Study Habits Can Improve Your Grades Essay Why improving your study habits can improve your grades Having bad study habits can really show up in your grades, but if you change your study habits your grades will improve. Many important things factor in understanding about studying. The most important fact about studying: no two people think alike; therefore, no two people study the same. What works for you may not work for your friend, and vice versa. I know I have no class that I enjoy so much that I cannot wait to get home so that I can study it, on that note we can only wish. As people we are all different for some students studying and being motivated to learn comes naturally but for me not so much. Success in high school and college really depend on good study habits....show more content... That could benefit or hurt your study habits and note taking. Also bad study habits could result in not knowing how to study. Studying is not just reading out loud it's about comprehending what you read. Ask yourself questions, write about what you read, or tell someone what you read. Doing so can improve your memory of what you read up to 85% instead of just 15%. You can also survey what you are about to read. Surveying is essentially understands what you are reading. Basically you can study something you don't understand. Question what you have just read, ask yourself questions about what you are reading or studying. Always pay attention to things in bold or italicized print. Recite what you have just read, this makes it stick better. Try to remember the headings and important ideas, try to say what you have just read in your own words this way you understand it better, therefore you remember it without actually trying. When you study, reading out loud does not help you study, and if you move your lips while reading you are not reading efficiently. Not knowing when to study affects you just as much as not knowing how to study. You don't necessarily have to study the day you get your notes but that does not mean to wait till the day of the test to study either. Reading over your notes daily really helps your memory. A very important note about studying is to only study when you are well rested, and have already planned for it. This is where a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

But for a productive and successful life, we must need to consider it as an important phase of our life. Every good habit helps you to achieve your dream; it promotes positivity in your life. 15 Steps To change Habit Small Steps: Why we need to take small habit changes first because small habit changes motivate us, we can accomplish it easily in comparison with a big task. • 4. What Is The Power Of Habit Essay We are creatures of habit. Whether they are good or bad, habits shape our actions and help us get through our days. As Charles Duhigg describes in his book, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, habits "emerge because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort." They are routines that automate parts of our behavior. Habits can be so firmly ingrained into our neural networks that we aren't actually conscious of them, and we don't need to put much thought to follow through them. Duhigg explains how habits work through a "loop": there is a cue, which triggers a habit. Then there is a routine, which is the automatic behavior. Lastly, there is a reward which will determine your desire to keep the habit. This...show more content... The biggest tip Duhigg offers in his book is that in order to break a habit and establish new ones, you must analyze your habit loop. Think about the routine that you want to change, identify your cues, try to figure out what cravings are driving your routine, and make a plan for yourself to change that routine. After reading this book, I tried to think about my habit loop. The routine I wanted to change was going on Netflix to procrastinate. I noticed the cue to this routine was coming home after a long day at school, because I would immediately go on Netflix as soon as I arrived home. I then realized I did this, not because I was too lazy to do my homework, but because I was craving for an outlet to destress after a long day at school. So now, I try to think of different ways to destress that do not affect my sleep or productivity. I can take a shower, I can exercise, maybe I can talk to a good friend before starting my homework. Sometimes does not work and I still find myself going back to binge watching shows on Netflix to procrastinate, but now that I know what drives this habit and what I can do to help myself, I can say that I am making progress in breaking this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Bad Habits, By Ann M. Graybiel And Kyle S. Smith The article "Good Habits, Bad Habits", written by Ann M. Graybiel and Kyle S. Smith, indulges in the idea that in every task we preform, our mind use one of two ways. The first way is the mindless way. This approach is where we do tasks without thinking. We use this technique almost everyday. For example, when a person takes the same route to his or her job everyday, they are using this process of thinking. The second technique is considered the "deliberation circuit" by Graybiel and Smith. This procedure is the opposite of the first. It involves some sort of decision making to take place, before an action can carried out. The mindless technique is how habits are formed. To coherently understand this, we must first take an in depth look at...show more content... In an experiment conducted by Wolfram Schultz and Ranulfo Romo, rats were given a two choices, and each choice was triggered by an instructional tone. In the initial tests, the rats would be taught where to go after each tone; consequently, they would be rewarded if they went to the right area after the corresponding tone went off. Eventually, the rats began to develop a habit of going to the area that the tone signaled, and receiving their reward (Graybiel & Smith 41). A habit was created because of the treat they were given; this is an example of positive reinforcement. In this case food was used as a positive reinforcement; however, there are a variety of options that can be considered a positive reinforcement. There are certain guidelines these reinforcements must abide to, such as they must be something that is pleasurable rather than a basic necessity. If I was going to use food, then it would have to be something like cookies, chips, or anything else appealing (Kazdin 159). In my case, positive reinforcements would be put in action when I go beyond the three–hour limit when studying my notes. Negative reinforcement would be applied when I do less than the required three hours, or I took less than five Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Developing Good Work Habits During the early school years, students must begin to develop good work habits including preparing for schoolwork, organizing time and effort, and developing effective study skills. The ability to manage one's effort is closely linked to academic productivity and success. A strong capacity for work enables students to delay gratification and to persevere through tasks that take considerable energy. It also helps them sustain their effort when information is worthy of attention, even though not immediately exciting, such as when studying a chapter they will be tested on the next day, or reading the instructions for a science experiment. Developing good organizational behaviors can play a key role in efficient school performance. School is much easier for students who know how to organize themselves, their materials, and their work space. Having effective organizational tactics will continue to be a valuable asset throughout a student's education and career. Being ready to learn often means being prepared for the next activity, having to shift gears from one task to another, and having all the necessary materials on hand. In order to develop this aspect of learning readiness, students must engage their attentional abilities (especially that of previewing), as well as their memory skills. Through previewing, a student is able to look ahead and be prepared to deal with upcoming circumstances, challenges, and academic tasks. For example, previewing helps students prepare for a test, get ready for an upcoming class, and smoothly transition from one activity to the next. In addition, students who preview are able to determine which Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People Essay THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was written by Stephen R. Covey in 1989. This book has been on the National Best Seller list for over 200 weeks. Many people have attended Covey's seminars on the subject. Many companies have required top executives to read this book including AT & T,Dow Chemical, Ford, Deloitte and Touche, Marriott, Xerox and Ritz Carlton Hotels. This book proposes that there are seven habits that can be learned to improve one's personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Covey describes a habit as "the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire." Knowledge would represent the "what to do", skill the "how to do", and desire the "want to do". In order to create...show more content... "Think Win/Win" is the fourth of Covey's habits. This habit requires a four step process: 1. See the problem from the other point of view. 2. Identify the key issues and concerns (not positions) involved. 3. Determine what results would constitute a fully acceptable solution. 4. Identify possible new options to achieve those results. This frame of mind is based on cooperation rather than competition. We must have the courage to state our convictions, but to take into consideration other's convictions. "Seek first to understand then to be understood" is the fifth habit. Covey suggests that we "diagnose before we prescribe in communication". That is we need to understand the situation before rushing in with our prescription of advise. Seeking to understand requires consideration, communication and listening skills. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. There are five levels of listening. We may be ignoring the other person, not listening at all. We may practice pretending by just responding by nodding our head or saying "Yeah. Uh–Huh. Right." Another level is selective listening which is hearing only certain parts of the conversation. • 10. Exercise and eating healthy are two of the most important things you need to do to take care of your body properly. Both exercise, and eating healthy, have many advantages and benefits. They help with multiple things needed throughout your life. These things include growing physically, mentally, and if you are religious, spiritually as well. All of this adds up to your body functioning in the highest and best way possible. Exercise, or physical activity helps your body in many ways. For example, exercise helps control the weight of a human. It helps prevent people gaining unwanted weight and helps people who have unwanted weight to lose it. The muscles then build back up, becoming stronger than before. (lifehacker.com) People still need to be careful when they exercise because they can hurt themselves or overexert themselves while doing it. Being a little sore for a 24–48 hour period is normal but when being sore is a severe pain, it was probably caused by overexertion. (lifehacker.com) For people who want to lose weight when they exercise they need to take a completely different approach. Instead of doing high–intensity workout for short periods of time, they need to do the exact opposite. Brian Parr from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of South Carolina says: "When you exercise for a longer duration, you're going to use the slow twitch fibers that are really good at burning fat. If you went and did a couple hundred meter sprints for your workout, it only works the fast muscle fibers, and they use primarily carbohydrates and don't burn that much fat at all. For example, when you get on an elliptical or treadmill you can push the "fat burning" button, it will be longer and lower intensity because that favors the muscles that are going to burn more fat. So if you do a jog instead of a sprint, you're burning more fat." • 11. Personal Reflection Paper On Habits Essay Personal Reflection Essay 1 Corderius (Cp) Swift APSU Personal Reflection Essay 1 Habits are Powerful. I have many different habits. Some good although some are not so good. A few habits are my schoolwork habits, relating to friends, deciding on what to wear, what to eat, what music I listen to, and a few that's personal. All of these, good and bad. These habits of mine all impact my life one way or another. My habits are powerful, and have helped shaped my life into the way that it is today. Some habits are very powerful to where they can take over your life completely. Fortunately for me, that's not my case. First off my schoolwork habits. My schoolwork habits are kind of good. So far they've been pretty good, and working very well for me, because I'm a freshman in college. However as of now they have to change. The things I've done in my previous years for my schoolwork just won't get me by anymore. College is a whole new ball game. I have never had or developed a study habit or good study habit like other kids. I always felt I was too good to study or I never tried to fit studying into my time of day. I was never that kid to go home and study for 2 hours straight. I couldn't understand how people read over school notes for 2 hours straight at home. I've felt school work should be done at school. I only studied if I was forced by my mom, when I was younger of course. Otherwise if I knew I had a test or quiz coming up the day before I would study some. The seven habits described in this book were being proactive, Beginning with the end in mind, put first things first, think win–win, seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize, and sharpen the saw. The first habit Being proactive means not to make choices on impulse. it means to evaluate the situation before making a desicion. for example, two years ago when i had friends that talked behind my back i just moved on and found better friends rather than be mean to them or excluding them out of my way. The last habit ( Sharpening The Saw) encompasses all the others and ensures we engage in activities of personal renewal so that we can maintain our PC abilities! With these concepts as a background, we are now ready to review the habits. Habit 1 : Be Proactive. The Habit of Personal Vision. According to Covey, this habit reflects our innate ability to take charge of our lives. We are not simply products of in–grained stimulus– response reflexes. We have the ability to take charge, plan ahead, and focus our energies on things we can control instead of reacting to or worrying about things over which we have little or no control. This habit allows us to rise above the ebbs and flows of the tides of our day–to–day lives and direct our lives. Habit 2 : Begin With the End in Mind. The habit of personal leadership. In this habit, we begin each day, week, project, etc. with a clear vision of our direction and destination. This habit inculcates the ability to create our desired results mentally first in accordance to our guiding principles, and then maintain this vision throughout our daily activities. Part of the process of developing this habit is to develop a personal mission statement, philosophy, or creed. This mission statement focus on what you want to be and do. Your planning activities then can always be refer back to this mission statement so you can maintain a proper perspective on where you are headed and how you hope to get there. • 15. The Power of Habit First off, we are creatures. We are animals. We're very sophisticated and good–looking and all that, but let's never forget that we're made of flesh and blood. In particular, our brains are incredibly complex evolved machines. Our brains govern basic processes such as breathing and food intake, and also enable us to appreciate the finer points of John Cleese's performances in Fawlty Towers. As creatures, we have needs. We need to eat, and so we eat. As rather intelligent and social creatures, we like to chat with one another, and so we do. We take turns and finish our conversations gracefully. And there are dozens and dozens more behaviors that are just as complicated, if not more so. How on Earth do we get all of this done? That's where...show more content... No writer feels like he is writing enough. We all watch too much television, spend too much time on Facebook, or waste our writing time doing other things. For beginning writers, the problem is especially acute. With no editor giving a deadline, no fans clamoring for the next installment, and no writing income, there is literally no incentive to write–at least not consistently. Beginners might write when they are "inspired," but with so many other things pulling them away from the writing desk, how can they stick with it for the months and years it takes to carve out a writing career? On the other hand, most professional writers write every day. Not because they are inspired more often, not because they have more free time, and not because they are neglecting other parts of their lives. Pros write every day for one simple yet powerful reason. They've made it a habit. We tend to think of habits as bad (smoking, cussing, biting your fingernails) but they can also be good (walking the dog, oatmeal for breakfast, a weekly date with your spouse). THE POWER OF HABIT shows how easily habits form. They rely on three simple things–a cue, a routine, and a reward–and don't take long to stick. Our brains love habits. They allow us to be efficient. They help us do things like drive a car without constant self–monitoring. Once we learn where the brake pedal is and how hard to press the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. THE HIDDEN AGENCY OF HABITS Before we dive into the nitty–gritty of "small habits" and how they can make your goals easier to achieve, it's important to understand the presence and sheer power of habits in our every–day lives. Many of the things we do on a daily basis–stopping for coffee before work, reading the newspaper, taking a shower, exercising, watching TV, having a snack–are habits that have been so programmed in our neurological pathways that we don't even know they exist. We move through our day like a plane on autopilot, automatically responding to the happenings of daily life based on the habits we've learned over time. There's a short anecdote from American author David Foster Wallacethat illustrates this idea rather nicely. During his commencement speech at Kenyon College, the late Wallace said:...show more content... The water is so much a part of their every–day reality that it goes unnoticed–or, as Wallace mentioned later in his speech, is "hidden in plain sight all around." Human habits can be explained in much the same way. Although typically unseen and unnoticed by us, our habits are powerful enough to impact our decision–making and drive our daily activities. In fact, Duke University researchers found that over 40% "of our actions are unconscious habits." It is this idea that validates the saying "old habits die hard" and often makes new habits exceedingly difficult to establish. So should you stop trying? • 17. Eight Habits Of Mind Essay The Eight Habits of Mind are traits supposedly needed in order to be successful in school and life – eight characteristics that are essential in order to achieve your goals. The first trait is curiosity – a characteristic that I definitely have. Part of being a teenager is struggling with your identity and pondering your purpose. Questions that I find thinking about often is what is the meaning of life? Does a God really exist? How can humans have the potential to be so evil and yet be peaceful and kind? Are we trapped by a predestined fate, or are we solely responsible for what happens in our lives? Does everything happen for a reason? How can there be so much wealth and yet so much poverty in the world? I wish I knew the answers to these questions. (Humans have a tendency to want to be able to know everything so that they can feel in...show more content... I think I fall somewhere in the middle on this topic. I am set in my ways but I want to experience news things. I know what is important to me, and what I like and don't like. These are the things that feel real to me. A different way of being or thinking seems like it exists only on another planet, like it is so far away from me, because all I've ever experienced is my own way of living. I am pretty stubborn too, and unless I am looking to change an aspect of my life, I typically won't consider a new way. I can also be pretty judgmental, which makes me less open too. I think the best way to practice being more open is to try new things or to travel to another country and immerse yourself in a different culture. In my opinion, the third trait of engagement is closely related to curiosity. Like I said earlier, if you are curious about something, you are involved and excited to learn more. I am engaged when learning about something interesting. Engagement is important, because without it, you will soon find yourself falling asleep when your math teacher is talking, or doze of while doing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
