2. What is a multi touch?
Multi-touch is a method of input on a touch screen that allows two or more fingers to be used on
the screen at one time. Apple's iPhone is famous for introducing multi-touch to the cell phone
world by using it to allow pinching and stretching gestures on the screen to control zooming.
Multi-touch is something typically associated with capacitive touch screen displays rather than
with more common resistive touch screen displays.
In computing, multi-touch refers to a touch sensing surface's (track pad or touch screen) ability
to recognize the presence of two or more points of contact with the surface. This plural-point
awareness is often used to implement advanced functionality such as pinch to zoom or activating
predefined programs.
In an effort of disambiguation or marketing classification some companies further breakdown the
various definitions of multi-touch.
Qn. 1 what problem does Multi Touch technology solves?
Multi Touch helps people easier to remember rather than command. They do not have to
be learned because it is based on ingrained human movements.
Multi Touch technology solves many problems that computers have today but none as
much as the ability to not need a mouse and the small amount of time needed to accomplish
tasks. By not needing a mouse to use the computer people can work in a more open
environment. People can easily scroll through an article online by simply sliding their finger
down the screen. When using iPod Touch to listen to music, user can go scroll through all of
their songs with just a swipe of a finger.
Multi Touch technology allows the user to use one or more fingers to perform different
tasks without pressing any buttons, turning scroll wheels, or striking keys. This technology
enables humans to perform on screen tasks with hand gestures that they already use daily, which
will lessen mistakes. No longer will commands and processes have to be taught and learned
because people can use their hands to complete their tasks.
Multi Touch technology also helps in zooming in and out of certain things. Instead of the
users right clicking the mouse and selecting zoom in multiple times to be able to read something,
the user can now simply place two fingers on screen and then spread them apart until they reach
the desired size of the article. This technology is very helpful for pictures as userll. I can zoom
in on pictures with my iPod Touch so easily and look at every little detail that the picture can
show.
There are numerous problems that Multi Touch technology has solved but I believe that
biggest two would be the enhanced speed process to accomplish tasks and the accessibility of not
needing a mouse.
a) Helps people with disabilities - Helps autistic students to speak to and communicate
with others.
3. b) Replace the use of mouse and keyboard - For users who cannot grasp a mouse and
want the functionality of a PC.
c) Minimize clutter with portable device - Such as the Android operating systems for
smart phones has support for multi-touch. Users can manage emails, contacts, calendars
and hold virtual meetings through a built-in webcam and microphone.
Thus, Problems Solved by Multi-Touch is;
a) Ease of Use
b) Requires Little Training
c) Decreases Interface Problems
d) Reduces Errors
e) Used in Extreme Environments
Qn. 2 what are the advantages and disadvantages of a Multi Touch interface? How useful
is it? Explain.
Some of the Multi Touch's ADVANTAGES are as under;
Firstly, it is easier to remember rather than command. Display's glass cover can detect any
touch using electrical fields then submitted the information to a LCD screen below. Secondly,
quickly move back and forth through a series of User pages or photos by swiping. It also can be
swiping through placing three fingers on the screen and moving them rapidly sideways. Besides
that, to pinching the image, only have to shrink or expand the photo. Then, Multi Touch is easy
to use by anyone.
a) Extremely good for object manipulations - Touch, drag, “pinch” to zoom in and out, slide
finger up and down or sideways as if they usurer physical objects without moving a mouse,
pressing buttons or striking keys. For example, Perceptive Pixel offers pressure-sensitive multi-
touch displays that can sense an unlimited number of simultaneous touches with accuracy and
precision. Their displays come bundled with the right software and have applications in
broadcasting, medical imaging, data exploration, digital storyboarding, industrial design and
more.
b) More versatile than single-touch interfaces - As opposed to the single-touch screen, which
recognizes only one touch point. Multi Touch interface allows one or more fingers to perform
gestures to manipulate objects.
c) Multi touch gestures are easier to remember than commands - Based on ingrained human
movement that do not have to be learned. Touch is ideal for consuming/presenting information.
Because it is a more natural interface, it increases user productivity.
d) Collaborative use - Before the Multi Touch technology was invented, even with computer
display connected to an external projector and another mouse, it was impossible for more than
one person to make edits when pulling together a PowerPoint presentation. There is now an
operating system that would support a minimum of dual input for “group conversations” on a
4. single workstation. Made editing easier as more than one person can make edits to a project or
presentations at the same time.
Thus, the advantages are;
a) Ability to adapt
b) Ability to rapidly perform complex tasks

The main Multi Touch DISADVANTAGES can be;
It will be hard for the person to use if they do not have fingers. Besides that, there's no
application that can help others to prevent themselves from having a virus or problem on Multi
Touch.
There are some disadvantages for the multi touch that might be a problem to some and to others
might be only a simple accommodation to new technology.
a) Eyes on: Touch screen interfaces are nearly all “eyes on”. User cannot type by touch while their
eyes are occupied elsewhere like most cases of 12-17 year old kids than can text and type
without looking. With an all touch-screen interface user generally cannot start, stop, or pause
user MP3 player, for example, or close and an user phone by reaching into user pocket, purse, or
briefcase like user usually do since user don't have a one mechanical key to memorize its
location and operate eyes free. This risks serious accidents for example if someone tries to
operate a multi touch car radio while driving.
b) Hands on: Handheld devices that rely on touch screens for input require two hands to operate:
one to hold the device and the other to operate it. Thus, operating them generally requires both
eyes and both hands. Unlike the usual phones that can be operated and held using one hand: one
hand to hold the device and a finger of the same hand to operate it.
c) Fingers on: User finger is not transparent: the smaller the touch screen, the more users obscure
what is being pointed at. That is why a stylus or pointer should be used: it is very skinny and
accurate in such a way that nothing on the screen gets obscured. There is a reason user don’t rely
on finger painting: even on large surfaces, writing or drawing with the finger is generally not as
effective as it is with a brush or stylus. And on small surfaces, it is even more ineffective to try
and draw or write with a finger.
d) Prices: Prices of such devices might be too high at the beginning as it is for every new emerging
technology. That might be a disadvantage and people might refrain to buy it and be afraid to try
new stuff but eventually prices will continually decrease year after year until the product reaches
every customer it can in order to spread the new technology.
Thus, disadvantages are;
a) Size of Finger
b) Inconvenient in drawing and writing
c) Caused risk
d) Limitation to the Handicapped
5. Qn. 3 Describe three business applications that would benefit from a Multi Touch
interface.
a) SMALL BUSINESS INSDUTRIES
Multi-touch solutions for small businesses focus on staying side by side of the latest technologies
and software applications. Like most of the computer sciences industry, multi-touch technology
is constantly evolving and those businesses that do not adapt will be left behind this perpetually
rising curve. Touch screen displays allow companies and entrepreneurs the ability to forge better
relationships with employees and clientele, resulting in a more efficient business process,
increased employee knowledge and improved brand loyalty. However, because this technology
is relatively new, it can be difficult to determine exactly what multi-touch solutions would apply
to user business. The following are 6 professions that can significantly benefit from touch screen
display integration:
i. The Medical Community: Multi-touch solutions for the medical community can
revolutionize the way doctors and patients communicate. This technology allows a medical
professional the ability to convert X-rays, MRIs, CT Scans and more into a digital image that
can then be used in a graphical interface to better visualize and discuss diagnoses, show
procedures and treatment options, present analyses and outline prevention measures.
ii. The Legal Profession: Lawyers can use touch screen display interfaces to prepare for trial. It
offers a way to graphically display research and investigative material and can be a powerful
presentation tool - especially during trial. Attorneys can show high-definition digital images
of evidence, play videos, animations or other graphics, display interactive timelines and
more. Additionally, specialized multi-touch software programs for lawyers have been
developed that allow the seamless connection of the many phases of trying a case.
iii. Retail: For any business that needs to show clients its products - like photographers and real
estate agents, multi-touch solutions are critical for compelling a consumer through imagery.
Retail businesses can have touch screen display hardware and software systems custom-
manufactured that can be taken on the road or built to integrate with current sales space.
iv. Sports: Those in the professional sporting industry know the value of strategy better than
anyone, and there are few better tools for developing winning strategies than with multi-
touch technology. Touch screen displays can be used for game preparation, opponent
scouting, play development and team management.
v. Professional Services: Regardless of user industry, there are custom-made touch screen
display solutions that can streamline business processes and increase ROI. This includes the
ability to create dazzling presentations, document reviews, financial planning, account
reconciliation, track supply chains and inventory, control purchasing and manage warehouse
systems.
6. b) PUBLIC SAFETY
Critical public safety functions can be made significantly more efficient with multi-touch
technology for law enforcement and rescue personnel. Interactive tracking and mapping features,
graphical displays of response plans and continuing education and training programs can help to
save lives - and money.
Whether used to interact with consumers, clients, employees or peers, the fact of the matter is
that human beings are an exceptionally visually-oriented creature. Capitalizing on this by
investing in multi-touch solutions isn't an expense - it's an investment in user future. To claim
user place in it, click one of the links below to see videos where this technology is put into
action.
c) TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS
The following passage shall provide understanding of some basic technologies related to multi-
touch interfaces.
i. Touch Technologies: There are three major basic technologies for recognizing touches, the
first being a resistive surface which recognizes input by electric currents built between two
layers on touch. Second, capacitive surfaces using electric fields created from the surface's
corners. And lastly, there are optical approaches which consist of capturing camera images of a
surface and reacting to distinctions created by touches.
ii. Discrete & Continuous Processing: As Bill Buxton points out, there are two types of actions
on touch interfaces. There are discrete input scenarios where users are basically just pushing on
specific spots and there are continuous actions where users are performing an ongoing
movement that has to be followed. Naturally, the latter requires more precise touch recognition
for reasonable results.
iii. Information Content of a Touch: Buxton also describes how diverse the information
delivered on a single touch can be. Although many systems only react on the position of a
touch input, user could also access much further data characterizing the type of the per- formed
touch, including the pressure sensitivity which basically enables a third axis for touch
interaction apart from the horizontal and vertical position. Furthermore, the angle in which a
finger or device approaches the surface could be recognized, e.g. by the touch contour or by
checking where the palm or other fingers are hovering above the surface. Force vectors enable
the user to add additional touch data by making use of friction between finger and screen.
7. Qn. 4 what management, organization, and technology issues must be addressed if user or
user business was considering systems and computers with Multi Touch interfaces?
If Multi Touch interfaces user to be installed at my business, I don't feel like there would be
many issues that would need to be addressed other than the training of my employees on how to
properly use the computers, and making sure that my employees are not abusing this privilege.
Besides these two small problems, I feel that Multi Touch technology is the future and will only
continue to grow and improve.
There was little secondary research on the issues regarding business' and how they would
deal with the installation of Multi Touch interfaces, but this is probably because it is such a new
tool not many companies have implemented it yet.
If I had a computer with Multi Touch technology, I would be using it much more often than I
already do. By having the ability to scroll through articles by sliding user finger, or zooming in
and out while looking through a photo album just seems like a lot more fun. It adds a somewhat
"cool" feeling to doing normal everyday tasks.
I would also have my laptop/tablet on me at all times because it would be much more
compact and travel accessible. Without the need of a keyboard or mouse, computers can now be
transported very easily.
A Multi Touch computer would make online games and computer games much more
enjoyable to play. The user could then feel more involved with the game because they would be
using their hands a lot more. I love playing games on my iTouch, and who wouldn't want to play
those same games and others on a larger screen. The only downside that I could think of is me
having to clean my screen very frequently, and also keeping my friends and relatives away from
using my computer.
