3. WORLD HEPATITIS DAY IS ON JULY 28,
GET THE NUMBERS BEHIND HCV
In commemoration of Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg,
discoverer of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), each year the World
Health Organization (WHO) formally recognizes July 28 as World
Hepatitis Day to promote public awareness of the risk factors,
symptoms, and treatments available for hepatitis. Although
vaccines are widely available for HAV and HBV strains, no such
vaccine exists for HCV. As a result, HCV continues to be a major
cause of serious liver disease worldwide. According to the WHO,
annually, approximately 350,000 to 500,000 people die from HCV-
related liver diseases.

Although antiviral treatments exist for HCV, access to medical
care is often lacking in many communities. Additionally, because
HCV often does not exhibit symptoms for several years, many
people are unaware that they are infected. According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), persons born
between the years 1945 and 1965 are five times more likely to
have HCV and account for three out of four adults living with the
disease. To check your risk for HCV with a simple five-minute self-
assessment from the CDC, visit
