2. • The ministry is headed by the cabinet-ranked
Minister of Human Resources Development, a
member of the Council of Ministers. The current
HRD minister is Smriti Irani, the youngest ever
to hold the office.
• Smriti Zubin Irani is an Indian politician and
former model, television actress and producer.
She represents the Bharatiya Janata Party and is
the incumbent Minister of Human Resource
Development of Government of India.
3. • Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003. She
became vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth
Wing in 2004. In the 2004 general elections for the
14th Lok Sabha, she contested unsuccessfully
against Kapil Sibal from the Chandni Chowk
constituency in Delhi. She advocated capital
punishment for rapists as a deterrent.
• In early 2010, Irani was appointed as the National
Secretary of BJP and on 24 June, she was appointed
as All India President of the BJP's women's wing,
BJP Mahila Morcha.In August 2011, she was sworn
in as a member of parliament from Gujarat to the
Rajya Sabha.
5. • Sushma Swaraj (born 14 February 1952) is an Indian
politician and the current Minister of External
Affairs in the Union of India. She is the second
woman to be India's external affairs minister. She
has been elected seven times as a Member of
Parliament and three times as a Member of
legislative assembly. At the age of 25, she served as
Chief Minister Of Delhi.
• In April 1990, she was elected as a member of the
Rajya sabha and remained there until she was
elected to the 11th Lok Sabhafrom South Delhi in
1996. She was Union Cabinet Minister for
Information and Broadcasting during 1996.
6. • She was re-elected to 12th Lok Sabha from South
Delhi Parliamentary constituency for a 2nd term in
1998. Under the second Vajpayee Government, she
was sworn in as Cabinet Minister for Information
and Telecommunications.
• She was Minister of Health, Family Welfare and
parliamentary affairs from January 2003 until May
2004, when the National Democratic Alliance
Government lost the general election.
• Sushma Swaraj became Leader of Opposition in the
15th Lok Sabha in place of Lal Krishna Advani and
retained this position till May 2014 when her party
got a major victory.
