Mastering mastery in cataclysm
1. Mastering Mastery In Cataclysm
TheCataclysm expansion has completely reshaped the way we play World of Warcraft. New zones such as Mount Hyjal and the long-awaited underwater zone have put in an appearance. Gilneas has opened as the starting area for Worgen, while many familiar zones have been changed in exciting ways and a whole new set of quests challenge you from level 1 through level 85.
The world is not the only thing to have been reshaped by the Shattering. Spells have been redesigned, entire class mechanics have been changed (the addition of Holy Power to paladins and the change from mana to focus for Hunters are just two of the most obvious), and talent trees have been utterly redesigned, cut down to 31 points, and given a unique, active Signature Move and several passive abilities that scale upwards from level 10, so that your character will “feel” different from other characters of the same class but different specs.
Mastery, however, is a completely new addition to characters which has begun in Cataclysm. Mastery is an ability that is trained when your character is level 80, and which grants a passive bonus which is useful to that specific spec. Each talent specialization of each class has a different Mastery which fits in with that spec’s talent tree and general theme.
As just two examples, the Blood Shield Mastery of Blood-specced Death Knights causes the character to receive 50% of the amount healed by their Death Strike attack as a damage absorption shield. The Flashburn Mastery of Fire Mages increases the character’s periodic fire damage effects (damage over time, or DoTs) by 20%.
Mastery cannot be trained further once it is acquired, but a new statistic has been added to gear – Mastery Rating. This rating eventually adds up to points of Mastery, and each point of Mastery increases the existing bonus of your character’s Mastery by a specific percent. This varies from Mastery to Mastery.
For example, with the two instances given above, each point of Mastery causes Blood Shield to include another 6.25% of the Death Strike damage in the damage shield. In other words, if your death knight has 5 points of mastery, the Blood Shield would absorb 81.25% of the Death Strike’s damage before breaking. Flashburn gains 2.5% from each point of Mastery, so 4 points of Mastery would increase periodic damage to 30%.
Part of getting the edge in Cataclysm is learning how much Mastery Rating is optimal to stack for your specific class and spec. 179.3 Mastery Rating equals 1 Mastery Point at maximum level (Level 85), so you will need to stack quite a bit to achieve noticeable results. Different classes and specs benefit more or less from Mastery, so you need to study this carefully to find how much Mastery Rating is best for you.
