* Use the positive, comparative and superlative forms of regular adjectives in sentences correctly

A. Preliminary Activities:
1. Prayer:
Children, please all stand and let us pray.
2. Song
Class, be seated. Let us sing a song first
before we go straight to our today’s lesson.
3. Review:
Yesterday, we studied and discussed about
adjectives.
Now, class what are adjectives?
That’s right! Who can repeat?
(Pupils will say their prayers.)

Adjectives are words that describe or modify
a noun or a pronoun.
(Several pupils repeat the answer)
Class, I have here six sentences. I want you
to circle the adjective that modifies the underlined
noun in each sentence below.
1. He ran through the muddy field.
2. Sam has a new bicycle.
4. The beetle scampered down the green leaf.
5. Hand me the plastic bowl.
6. We ate fresh strawberries.
7. The girl has curly hair.
B. Learning Activities:
1. Motivation:
Class, I have here a picture. I want all of
you to look at it carefully.
 Who are in the picture?
 Where do you think are they going?
 Have you experience going out for an
outing?
 Where did you go?
 What did you do there?
 Did you enjoy?
 Why?
2. Presentation:
Today, we are going to read selection
about an experience of the whole family in an
outing. Please pay attention to the italicized
words while reading it aloud. We are going to
answer some questions after reading the
selection.

Father, mother, brother and baby sister.
They will go out for an outing.

In a beach resort.

3. Comprehension Questions:
Let us answer some questions about the
selection.
a. Where did the family go?
b. What did they see along the way?
c. How did Mr. Cruz describe the place of
Dona?
d. What mountain did they see at Dona’s
place?
e. Do you think they will enjoy their stay at
Dona’s place?
One Sunday, the Cruz family traveled to
Arayat. In the car were Mr. and Mrs. Cruz, Peter
and baby sister Cora. They saw tall trees, rice
fields and a high mountain along the way. They
were so excited. They could not wait to reach
their destination.
At last, they arrived at Dona’s place.
Dona and her parents were happy to meet
them.
“Your place is very nice. The air here is
fresher than in the city,” said Mr. Cruz.
“The trees around here are taller than
those along the highway,” remarked Mrs. Cruz.
“But the tallest trees are in that
mountain. What do you call that mountain?”
Asked Peter as he pointed at the mountain.
“That is Mount Arayat.” answered Dona
“Let us Climb the mountain,” said Dona
“Come in and rest a while. I know you are
very tired because you have just come from a
long trip,” said Dona’s mother.
“We have prepared some native dishes
and delicacies for all of you,” exclaimed Dona’s
father “Thank you very much. I’m sure we will
all enjoy our stay here,” said Mrs. Cruz.
They go to Arayat.
They saw trees, rice fields and mountain.
Father said Dona’s place is very nice.
They saw mount Arayat.

Let us read some sentences taken
from the selection. Study the italicized words are
used in each sentence.

3. What do we call this degree of comparing
adjectives?
4. In the second sentence, what is the

5. What are compared in the sentence?
6. How are they compared? What syllable
was added to the adjective to show
comparison?
7. What do we call this degree of comparing
adjectives?
8. Look at the third sentence, what is the
adjective used?
9. What are compared in the sentence?
10. How are they compared? What syllable
was added to the adjective to show
comparison?
11. What do you call this degree of comparing
adjectives?
5. Generalization:
Alright children let us now conceptualize.
a. What are the three degrees of comparing
adjectives?
b. When do we use the positive form of
adjectives?
c. When do we use the comparative form of
adjectives?

*Nothing. It only describes the trees along the
highway.
*This is called the positive form of comparing
adjectives.

*The trees along the highway and those around
the house of Dona.
*By adding –er to the adjective tall.
*This is called the comparative form of
adjectives.

*All the trees they saw in Arayat.
*By adding – est to the adjective tall.
*This is called the superlative form of
adjectives.
 The three degrees of comparing
adjectives are the positive degree,
comparative degree and superlative
degree.
 The positive degree is used to describe
only one person, place, thing, idea or
event.
 The comparative degree or the –er form
is used to compare two persons, places,
things, ideas or events.
They saw tall trees along the high way.
The trees around here are taller than those along
the highway.
But the tallest trees are in the mountain.

6. Application:
a. Guided Practice:
Make comparisons between and among
the pictures in the boxes. Construct your own
sentences using the three degrees of comparing
adjectives.
b. Independent Practice:
(Group activity) Work with your group
mates using the three degrees of comparing
adjectives, describe and compare the objects
inside the envelope.
 The superlative degree or the –est form is used
to compare three or more persons,
places, things ideas or events.

OBJECTIVES: * Use the positive, comparative and superlative forms of regular adjectives in sentences correctly II. SUBJECT MATTER: Using Adjectives to Compare References: English Expressways Language Textbook 5, pp. 189-199 English Expressways Teacher’s Manual, pp. 151-159 Basic and Beyond Language Textbook, pp.245 Materials: Charts, pictures, song, and flashcards III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES: Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity A. Preliminary Activities: 1. Prayer: Children, please all stand and let us pray. 2. Song Class, be seated. Let us sing a song first before we go straight to our today’s lesson. 3. Review: Yesterday, we studied and discussed about adjectives. Now, class what are adjectives? That’s right! Who can repeat? (Pupils will say their prayers.) “The Adjective Song” Describe, describe describe a noun Using adjectives Color, number, shape and size Can tell about a noun. Describe, describe describe a noun Using adjectives Feeling words like glad and sad Can tell about a noun. Adjectives are words that describe or modify a noun or a pronoun. (Several pupils repeat the answer)

Presentation: Today, we are going to read selection about an experience of the whole family in an outing. Please pay attention to the italicized words while reading it aloud. What mountain did they see at Dona’s place? e. Do you think they will enjoy their stay at Dona’s place? One Sunday, the Cruz family traveled to Arayat. In the car were Mr. and Mrs. Cruz, Peter and baby sister Cora. They saw tall trees, rice fields and a high mountain along the way. They were so excited. They could not wait to reach their destination. At last, they arrived at Dona’s place. Dona and her parents were happy to meet them. “Your place is very nice. The air here is fresher than in the city,” said Mr. Cruz. “The trees around here are taller than those along the highway,” remarked Mrs. Cruz. “But the tallest trees are in that mountain. What do you call that mountain?” Asked Peter as he pointed at the mountain. “That is Mount Arayat.” answered Dona “Let us Climb the mountain,” said Dona “Come in and rest a while. I know you are very tired because you have just come from a long trip,” said Dona’s mother. “We have prepared some native dishes and delicacies for all of you,” exclaimed Dona’s father “Thank you very much. I’m sure we will all enjoy our stay here,” said Mrs. Cruz. They go to Arayat. They saw trees, rice fields and mountain. Father said Dona’s place is very nice. They saw mount Arayat. Yes, teacher.
  • 4. 4. Skill Development: Let us read some sentences taken from the selection. Study the italicized words are used in each sentence. 1. What adjective is used in the first sentence? 2. Was there a comparison? 3. What do we call this degree of comparing adjectives? 4. In the second sentence, what is the adjective used? 5. What are compared in the sentence? 6. How are they compared? What syllable was added to the adjective to show comparison? 7. What do we call this degree of comparing adjectives? 8. Look at the third sentence, what is the adjective used? 9. What are compared in the sentence? 10. How are they compared? What syllable was added to the adjective to show comparison? 11. What do you call this degree of comparing adjectives? 5. Generalization: Alright children let us now conceptualize. a. What are the three degrees of comparing adjectives? b. When do we use the positive form of adjectives? c. When do we use the comparative form of adjectives? *tall *Nothing. It only describes the trees along the highway. *This is called the positive form of comparing adjectives. *taller *The trees along the highway and those around the house of Dona. *By adding –er to the adjective tall. *This is called the comparative form of adjectives. *tallest *All the trees they saw in Arayat. *By adding – est to the adjective tall. *This is called the superlative form of adjectives.  The three degrees of comparing adjectives are the positive degree, comparative degree and superlative degree.  The positive degree is used to describe only one person, place, thing, idea or event.  The comparative degree or the –er form is used to compare two persons, places, things, ideas or events. They saw tall trees along the high way. The trees around here are taller than those along the highway. But the tallest trees are in the mountain.
  • 5. a. When do we use the superlative form of adjectives? 6. Application: a. Guided Practice: Make comparisons between and among the pictures in the boxes. Construct your own sentences using the three degrees of comparing adjectives. b. Independent Practice: (Group activity) Work with your group mates using the three degrees of comparing adjectives, describe and compare the objects inside the envelope.  The superlative degree or the –est form is used to compare three or more persons, places, things ideas or events. Pupils answer may vary.
