  2. 2. who is rorie devine? what is gro.team? what is agile leadership? Mission Objective Strategy Tactics the right culture communication ways to fail the agile leadership playbook why do we do this? questions ¦ comments? agenda
  3. 3. rorie devine founder and CEO the founder and ceo of gro.team rorie devine has won an “IT Leader of The Year” award from Computing Magazine, been on the cover of CIO magazine (twice) and led the technology teams for some of the UK’s fastest growing businesses (Betfair, Hailo, gro.team...) after taking charge in one of his turnaround roles he realised that what he really needed to help him be successful were people with genuine skills/experience that could come in quickly, take accountability for things, deploy where he needed them and then leave when the job was done... unfortunately nothing like that existed and the idea for gro.team was born... © 2018 gro.team who is rorie devine? by focussing on making people and organisations successful gro.team is flying...it has won V3 and IMA awards, has > 3,000 social media followers and is being called the “Uber for talent” because it delivers talent where people need it, when they need it, how they need it and only for as long as they need it... gro.team
  4. 4. gro.team is a network of > 100 interims that helps grow yourself with coaching ¦ mentoring grow your team with interim ¦ permanent talent grow your company by growth hacking gro.team believes that the more people you help become successful the more successful you become... what is gro.team?
  5. 5. agile leadership is about CHANGE to lead in an agile way is to maximise the success of the group of people you are responsible for by… assembling the best talent available to you defining the direction and leading your team to a changed situation encouraging the right culture for your context “management” is dealing with issues in a task focused, introspective, reactive way with no focus on the customers or big picture... ways to fail - hiring poorly, not deploying the best talent available, not communicating Mission Objectives Strategy Tactics, losing sight of the customer, focusing on HOWS not WHATS, micromanaging, flip flopping... what is agile leadership?
  6. 6. the agile leadership playbook mission objectives strategy tactics communication the right culture authentically leading by example talent today agile leadership is about CHANGE tomorrow aim: to be a leader of leaders
  7. 7. do we still need “Strategy”? the days of grandiose "Five Year Strategies" are over but does that mean we don't need "Strategy" any more? no - what we need now is a strategic framework that informs and embraces change and actually makes tactical execution more effective
  8. 8. our strategy is our how leadership is about change and a simple analogy is that leaders take their organisation on a journey from the present location to a different (and hopefully better) place the strategy is a how not a what and although it (and the route we choose) can and should change at any time a well communicated strategy will help everyone know what they should be trying to do at every point in time
  9. 9. what does that mean? creating and communicating an effective strategy allows leaders to trust and empower their teams and removes any need to micro-manage them when making the micro-decisions we all make every day if we know the Strategy then picking the optimum path to get to the Objective most quickly becomes much more straightforward
  10. 10. MOST in his excellent book Winners And How They Succeed Alastair Campbell talks about OST which is an acronym for Objective Strategy and Tactics if we add Mission to the front of the acronym to make it MOST I think we have a framework really helps maximise execution effectiveness
  11. 11. the Mission the Mission is why we want/need to make the journey at gro.team our Mission, for example, is “Make the world a more successful place...person by person, company by company…”
  12. 12. the Objective the Objective is what we want to achieve in the next 12 months at gro.team our Objective, for example, is “Double our number of clients in this FY”
  13. 13. the Strategy the Strategy is how we are going to achieve our Mission and Objective at gro.team our Strategy, for example, is “Increase our social engagement by 100%”
  14. 14. the Tactics the Tactics are the things we think we need to do now to deliver our Objective. At gro.team we set 5-10 quarterly tactics and review their effectiveness and START/STOP/DO MORE/DO LESS every 3 months setting more than 5-10 tactics becomes counterproductive as it effectively says we're going to do everything we can think of...
  15. 15. M the Mission is why we want/need to make the journey O the Objective is what we want to achieve in the next 12 months S the Strategy is how we are going to achieve our Mission and Objective T the Tactics are the 5-10 things we will do this quarter to deliver our Strategy
  16. 16. the MOST framework we really do find that if you put your strategy in a MOST framework, and communicate it well, it very much becomes part of the solution not problem and helps ensure your execution is as agile, efficient and effective as possible
  17. 17. empowered customer focused learning people need to feel that they are important, trusted, listened to, permissioned to do things without approval, take risks, learn from mistakes, challenge orthodoxies...the half time dressing room metaphor is useful... It is EVERYBODY in a company's job to deliver the business plan..technology, “Agile” orthodoxy whatever are all HOWS not WHATS the competitive landscape changes literally every day...individuals and teams need to learn every day from what they do and what other people do.. the right culture....team
  18. 18. clear measure-act-measure reinforcement you can’t set and direction and take people on a journey without clear communication objectives, metrics, activities and impact need to be communicated clarity, repetition and reinforcement at least 10 times to land it! communication...lead sleep repeat...team daily weekly monthly recognition of behaviour you value whole team email weekly Direct Reports meeting 15 minute DR 1:1s lunch and learn team all hands
  19. 19. ways to fail… X failing to set a direction X failing to put activities in context X failing to address the big challenges X not simplifying X becoming introspective X losing focus on the customer X measuring success on HOWS not WHATS X not hiring or losing the best talent X micromanaging X flip flopping X creating a blame culture ...
