New York in the Forties The third slide lecture covers the establishment of New York city as the new artistic capital of the world after WWII. We look at some of the existing art movements such as the Ashcan School and the Harlem Renaissance, as well as the proliferation of cultural institutions such as the Art Students' League and Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century gallery. With easy access to European Modernists escaping the war, some of the biggest names in American art are beginning to formulate their ideas and find their artistic voice.
