Solar storms are known as called
solar flares. The solar magnetic field
causes solar activities. It is an intense
burst of radiation that is generated
due to the release of magnetic energy
from the sunspots. These are the
biggest explosive events in our solar
system. The solar storm looks like a
bright spot in the sun, lasting from a
few minutes to a few hours. Solar
flares are usually accompanied by the
release of huge charged plasma currents traveling millions of miles per hour. The currents
are called coronal mass ejection or CME.
Causes:
When CMEs reach the earth, they cause geomagnetic storms, which can damage satellites
and power grids. For example, in February 2011, a CME triggered by a particularly strong
solar flare interrupted radio communications across China. Some experts believe that the
economic loss caused by a large solar storm is more than 20 times the economic loss
caused by a large hurricane.
These are probably the only storms that humans don’t see or feel. We only hear about
solar storms in the news never really experiencing any effects. The magnetosphere
(earth’s outer atmosphere) absorbs all the effects. Solar storms temporarily disrupt the
earth’s magnetic field. The huge bursts of energy in the form of solar flares cause damage
to the satellites on the outer atmosphere of the earth.
Modern Technology:
Modern technology relies on various machinery that is sensitive to extreme space weather
events. A strong current passing through the earth’s surface during solar disturbances
disrupts electric power grids and causes corrosion of oil and gas pipelines. The changes in
the ionosphere during the geomagnetic storm destroyed the high-frequency radio and
GPS navigation. During the solar proton absorption event, the radio communications of
commercial aircraft on the trans-polar intersection route may be interrupted. During the
solar proton absorption event, the radio communications of commercial aircraft on the
trans-polar intersection route may be interrupted.
Effects:
2/2
Solar activity has affected humans and exploration robots. Studies have shown that in the
worst case, astronauts exposed to the radiation of solar particles can reach the exposure
limit within a few hours after the incident. Ground-to-orbit and ground-to-ground
communications are very sensitive to space storms. Scientists studying solar storms have
discovered that the frequency of solar flares corresponds to an 11-year solar cycle. During
peak hours, there may be multiple solar storms a day. At other times, solar storms may
occur less than once a week. Scientists have predicted that the current solar cycle will
cause a solar storm by 2024.
Meteorologists are asking to issue a warning for the geomagnetic storm which is expecting
to occur in the Earth’s atmosphere this weekend. According to a report, the storm is the
result of the solar wind moving at a speed of 1 million miles per hour. We can expect it
between Sunday and Monday.
The storm may hit parts of the earth between July 11- 12. Experts worry that strong winds
may cause geomagnetic storms in the Earth’s magnetosphere. The solar storm may also
cause the pleasant northern lights to appear in the northern and southern latitudes.
Although it is important to know that Solar storms are harmless to humans on the surface
of the earth. These storms are amazing, but they will not permanently harm our human
body as long as we stay on the surface of the earth. The earth’s atmosphere and mantle are
protecting us. There are many reasons to believe that solar storms have lasted for billions
of years since the appearance of the sun and the earth. This gives us reason to believe that
all life forms on earth have evolved under their influence.
