  2. 2. Volleyball is popular around the world. Over 800 million people play this sport.
  3. 3. • Volleyball was originally called mintonette. • The sport was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895. • William G. Morgan studied at Springfield College of YMCA.
  4. 4. • July 7, 1896 – At Springfield College, the first game of "volleyball" was played.
  5. 5. • 1916 – in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player were introduced.
  6. 6. • 1922 – the first YMCA national championship were held in Brooklyn, New York. • 1928 - it became clear that tournaments and rules were needed, the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA, now USA Volleyball) was formed.
  7. 7. • 1930 – the first two man beach game was played.
  8. 8. • 1934 – national volleyball referees were approved and recognized. • 1947 – the Federation Internationale De Volleyball (FIVB) was founded. • 1957 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) designated volleyball as an Olympic sport, to be included in the 1964 Olympic Games.
  9. 9. • 1964 – volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. • 1965 – the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) was formed. • 1974 – the World Championships in Mexico were telecast in Japan. • 1975 – the US National Women's team began a year- round training regime.
  10. 10. • 1983 – the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was formed. • 1984 – the US won their first medals at the Olympics in Los Angeles. The Men won the Gold, and the Women the Silver. • 1988 – the US Men repeated the Gold in the Olympics in Korea.
  11. 11. • 1990 – the World Leage was created. • 1995 – the Sport Volleyball was 100 100 years old. • 1996 – two person beach volleyball become an Olympic Sport.
  12. 12. • 20th century – volleyball is the second most popular sports in the world. It is vey popular for both man and women of all ages and athletic ability. • 2000 – Sydney • 2004 – Athens • 2008 – Beijing • 2012 – London • 2016 – Rio de Janeiro
  13. 13. Volleyball is a game of two teams of six players separated by a net. The goal is to be the first team to reach 25 in both games of the 2 set.
