STUDIES ABOUT THE BIBLE PART 2

2. I. What is the Bible?
A) The Bible is coined from the Greek word “biblios” which means scrolls .It
is also called “The Writings” and “The Scriptures”
B) The Bible is the oldest book in existence
C) It required 16 centuries or 1500 years to write it from 1450 B.C.(the time
of Moses) to 100 A.D. (just after the resurrection of Jesus Christ)
D) It was written by 40 authors from different generations and walks of
life but their writings were in perfect harmony which proves that God is
its real author. David was a king, Peter was a fisherman, Paul was a
lawyer, Matthew was a tax collector and Luke was a doctor

3. E) The Bible is composed of 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament and
27 in the New Testament. Testament means a covenant. Covenant
means an agreement.
F) The Old Testament records God’s original covenant or agreement
with man. Blood sacrifices of animals were made by men to
obtain forgiveness of sin. This was a symbol of the blood sacrifice
Jesus would provide under the new agreement with God.
G) The New Testament records the new covenant made by God
through His Son, Jesus Christ.

4. H) There are 39 books in the Old Testament and there are 4
divisions
I) 1) The Pentateuch or the Torah or the five books of Moses
> Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy
2) Historical Books: 12 books: From Joshua to Esther
> Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I Samuel, 2 Samuel, I Kings,
I Chronicles, II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther

5. H) There are 39 books in the Old Testament and there are 4
divisions

Song of Solomon
4) Prophetical Books
a) Major Prophets: 5 books: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations,
Ezekiel, Daniel
b) Minor Prophets: 12 books; Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah,
Jonah, Micah, Nahum Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai,
Zechariah, Malachi

7. J. There are 27 books in the New Testament, generally separated into 4 divisions
1) The Gospels: 4 books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John
2) Historical Book: 1 book: The Book of Acts
3) Pauline Epistles: 14 books: Romans, I Corinthians, II Corinthians, Galatians,
Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, I Thessalonians, II Thessalonians,
I Timothy, II Timothy, Titus, Philemon and Hebrews
4) General Epistles: 7 books: James, I Peter, II Peter, I John, II John, III John
and Jude
5) Prophetical Book: The Book of Revelations

8. II . Versions and Translations
A) The Bible was written in three languages:
1) Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew
except parts of Daniel and Nehemiah which were
written in Aramaic
2) The New Testament was written in Greek

9. B) None of the original manuscripts are in existence today. There are
some versions of the manuscripts but the originals are all gone.
C) Regarding translations: No translation is exact because no two
languages are exactly alike.
D) There are two main types of versions:
1) Translations
2) Paraphrases

10. E) A translation is an effort to help people understand the Bible in their own
language. It translates word for word.
F) A paraphrase translates thought by thought. They are written in modern
vocabulary and grammar but they are not exact translations.
G) Red letter editions: The words of Jesus are in red and the rest are in black
H) The original manuscripts are inspired but the translations are not.
I) We use the King James Version because we believe it is the closest to the
Received Text or Textus Receptus translated by Erasmus.

11. J) Some people believe that the King
James Version is the inspired
translation and it even surpasses the
Greek and Hebrew text.
K) These people do not accept other
versions and even say that if
your Bible is not King James then you
are not saved or if the KJV was not
used to share the word of God to you,
you are not saved.
L) We use the King James version only
because we believe it is a good
translation and not the only good
translation.
M) Good Translations
1) King James Version
2) New American Standard
3) American Standard Version
4) English Standard Version

12. N ) Flawed Translations:
1) New International Version: Easy to read but it suffers greatly from a
strong bias of its editorial staff to support Calvinistic teachings
2) Revised Standard Version: Some translators doubted the inspiration of
the Bible so the translation was influenced by their doubts.
3) New Century Version (Children’s Version): The translators tried to
simplify the text which resulted in the loss of subtlety of the original

13. O) Bad Translations: Heavy Editing was done by the translators
1) New International Version Inclusive Language edition
2) New Revised Standard Version
3) New Century Version ( Adult Version)
4) Contemporary English Version
5) New Living Translation
P) Other poor translations because of major changes in the text to support the
belief of the translators:
1) Today’s English Version( Good News bible)
2) New World Translation ( Produced by the Jehovah’s Witnesses)
