1. How to Stay Motivated
at Work
A presentation from Pathway
2. Motivation levels vary!
The motivation to work reaches peaks and troughs. It’s generally a
healthy thing – a sign that we need a break, or that the work is what
we really enjoy doing.
But sometimes, it’s just our brains being unhelpful.
People can manage their motivation.
Motivation makes working fun –
it’s the key to getting the job done!

3. So how can we motivate ourselves?
• Before we list our nine motivational
practices, consider that motivation
comes internally, not externally.
• Having a personal direction – a vision
for yourself – is key to achieving tasks.
Everything we are about to cover
stems from this fact.

4. 1. Identify your personal goals
• Your personal goals
are more important
than those of the
business – every time.
• There is a balance of
course, but without
personal goals, the
rest will suffer.

• The goal pyramid to
the left shows the
priorities, and how
each goal supports
the others.
5. Write your personal goals down
• Let yourself be
reminded of the goals
• Having it in writing –
and somewhere visible
– can kick-start your
motivation
• But you need to
believe in these goals

• Examples are:
• More money
• Better health
• Freedom with time
• Enjoyable work
• Gaining a qualification
• Starting a business
• More time with family
6. 2. Identify your specific goals
• Set specific long-term goals to achieve that contribute
to your personal goal:
• Could a promotion lead to more enjoyable work?
• Perhaps the ability to work from home?
• Moving departments?

• Put these goals in your goal pyramid – with this
structure in place, you can judge your actions. Think:
• ‘Where does the task I’m about to do contribute to
this pyramid?’
7. 3. Track your goals
• Witnessing progress and completion is a great
motivator
• Create something visual that
demonstrates where you were, are
and will be

• Struggling to complete a menial task?
• Struggling to even get out of bed?
• Use your income and hourly rate/project cost
• Put a portion of your income aside to
contribute towards the end goal – and track
how each hour gets closer to achieving it

• There is no formula for this
• It is a gut feeling that you are doing too much work, or not enough
• This will vary between:
• Your family commitments and other activities
• Your role in the business
• The amount of time you’ve been there
• Your commuting time
18. Weigh up what you want
