Android and iOS are the two dominant mobile operating systems. Android was developed by Android Inc. and is now owned by Google, using an open source Linux kernel. It runs on devices from many manufacturers. iOS was created by Apple to run exclusively on Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. At the highest level, iOS acts as an intermediary between the underlying
hardware and the apps that appear on the screen. The apps you create
rarely talk to the underlying hardware directly. Instead, apps

In 2004, the Android OS was developed with the backing of
Google by Android Inc. In 2005, Google paid $50 million
for the OS.
Originally the Android OS wasn’t designed for the
smartphone market; it was actually developed as a digital
camera platform.
All Android versions, with the exception of Android 1.0 &
1.1, are named after confectionary and desserts i.e. Jelly
Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and KitKat.
The first smartphone running Android was released in
2008, the HTC Dream it had a sliding keyboard.
The word ‘Android’ means a human with a male robot
appearance.
As of June 2016 Android’s app store “Google Play” has
over 2.2 million apps to download.
In 2015 there were around 98.5 million Android

it's easy to forget sometimes that "iOS" is a relatively recent
term. Until June 2010, Apple referred to its mobile operating
system as "iPhone OS."
There are 101 million iPhone users in the US
Since the population of the US is about 318 million, that
means that nearly 1/3 of the population owns an iPhone.
In 2011, Apple sold more iOS devices (156 million) than all the
Macs it had sold in 28 years (122 million).
In order to use the name "iOS," Apple had to reach an
agreement with Cisco, which already owned the trademark.
Apple and Cisco had also battled for the rights to the term
"iPhone.“
As of June 2016, 2 million apps were available in the App
Store to download for various iOS devices.
