  4. 4. Fr. Nicolas Etienne, died as a martyr there shortly after he wrote to Fr. Alméras. He helped finance the first journey of the missionaries to China.
  5. 5. 1659 20 Septemb When he was still a seminarian, he offered the Congregation a foundation out of his own family patrimony that would produce a significant annual interest for the support of the mission in Madagascar. Nicolas put a clause in the contract stating that if the mission in Madagascar should cease, the annual revenues should be used for other missions outside France. In 1674, the mission in Madagascar closed. In 1692, Monsieur Jolly, the third Superior General of the Congregation, decided to use the funds for China.

  7. 7. 1697 In 1697, Propaganda Fide called them to go to China. 10 Fe u The first Vincentian missionary, Fr Luigi Antonio Appiani together with Fr John Muellener, a diocesan priest set off for China.

  9. 9. St. François-Régis Clet was born on 17 August in Genoble, France 1748 After his secondary education, he entered the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) 1769
  10. 10. He moved to Paris and became the director of novitiate. Shortly after, the revolution broke out Propagamda Fide (Part of the Roman Curia responsible for missionary work and related activities) had sought some priests to go to China. Clet volunteered but was turned down 1788 His petitions to go to China went through. He was chosen to go with two conferes, Fr Lamiot and Fr Pesné 1791

Their journey began in April •  2 April, they arrived at Cape of Good Hope •  15 October, arrived in Macau •  For three months, they studied Mandarin and prepared for their mission 1791 Arrived in Jiangsi in October and was the only European in the area. Fr Lamiot was sent to Beijing and Fr Pesné to Hugang 1792
  13. 13. An imperial edict prohibited foreigners from entering the Chinese territory without permission and preaching their religion. With help from a Christian guide, they were able carry out their missions discreetly. Jiangsi was one of the richest provinces, with a large pop known for Chinese porcelain. “A new career is opening up for me. It is a matter of renewing the spirit of religion among the former Christians who have been left to themselves for several years, and of converting the infidels. So, this is my vocation, I hope, until my death.” 1793
  14. 14. Christians being accused of inciting rebellion against the ruling dynasty 1811 Clet and his other companions were forced to live as fugutives. For four months, they had to live in hiding. He was 71 years old 1818

January 1 He was found guilty of deceiving the Chinese people by preaching Christianity and was sentenced to strangulation on a cross February 18 After approval of his sentence by the Emperor, Father Clet was executed His body was buried on a hillside. Several decades later, it was returned to the Vincentian Motherhouse in Paris and and is now honored at St. Lazare. 1820

  19. 19. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII 1889 June 2nd Father Perboyre was canonized as Saint John Gabriel Perboyre, C.M. by Pope John Paul II 1996

  21. 21. At the age of 12, after reading a book on the life and martyrdom of the Vincentian missionary Jean-Gabriel Perboyre, Lebbe took Vincent as his name and decided to go to China as a Vincentian priest.
  22. 22. Born in Ghent, Belgium 1877 Entered the Vincentian seminary of St. Lazare, Paris 1895 Assigned to the vicariate apostolic of Beijing 1901

Launched the first Catholic newspaper with Ying Lianzhi 1912 Published the first Catholic daily, Yi Shih Pao (The social welfare) with some Catholic Chinese 1915 1916 French Consul of Tianjin (with support from the Church leadership in Tianjin) wanted to expand the French Concession by appropriating land adjacent to St. Joseph's Cathedral and incorporating it into the concession Onlookers reading Yi Shih Pao
  24. 24. Yi Shih Pao published many articles objecting to these actions. An article written by Lebbe on caused conflict with Tianjin  Bishop Paul-Marie Dumond 1919 This protest against the French consession influenced Pope Benedict XV’s apostolic letter Maximum Illud, which aimed to indigenize the Church in China and curb the worst abuses of Western missionaries, including actions undertaken in the interest of one's country rather than the Church as a whole. 1920 Through this conflict, Lebbe was transferred to Ningbo in April. He returned to Europe shortly after
  25. 25. In Europe, he competed for their allegiance with a former leader in the Tianjin Student Union and "Yishibao" reporter, Zhou Enlai*. He also helped to launch the priests' Society of Auxiliaries of the Missions and the Women Lay Auxiliaries of the Missions in Europe *Zhou Enlai - was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, serving from October 1949 until his death in January 1976. 1920-1927 Continued to lobby the Vatican to reform the China mission. As a result, he obtained the ordination of six Chinese bishops (Zhu Kaimin, Cheng Hede, Chen Guodi, Zhao Huaiyi, Hu Ruoshan and Sun Dezhen) by Pope Pius XI in Rome 1926
