Question 5 - Evaluation
1. Question 5
Throughout my magazine I feel as if I have attracted my desired target
audience in a variety of ways, using a variety of techniques. These
techniques are those I acknowledged during my research and
planning phase whereby I analysed Kerrang magazine, before
implementing many of its prominent techniques in my own magazine.
With regards to the language within the magazine, it can be serious
when required relating to a sector of my huge target audience, as
well as the seriousness surrounding the Beatles whom feature heavily
throughout. There is however a sufficient amount of colloquial
language to appeal to the younger embers of my target audience,
whom are well accustomed to slang and a light hearted tone if you
like. The magazine will come across as inviting and friendly such is the
use of this colloquial language. The bold fonts used for both masthead
and cover lines alike demand attention from the audience, both
engaging and appealing, as are the rhetorical questions and
colloquial elements on the magazine cover talking to the audience,
encouraging them to read on and purchase the magazine.
2. Question 5
In terms of my magazines double page spread I was forced to
adopted to very different type of writing, as I posed as both the
interviewer and interviewee respectively. I researched both the ways
in which an interview would speak, and the questions they are inclined
to pose, as well as Paul McCartney’s demeanour and attitude to
make it evident this interview is regarding him all be it in essence it
isn’t. This research left me with the serious yet humorous tone which
becomes apparent upon reading the article.
I wouldn’t regard myself as the biggest advocate of the Beatles, and
was therefore not entirely comfortably speaking as Paul McCartney,
yet had to compromise in order to appeal to my target audience. I
scoured the internet reading over respective interviews in which
McCartney has engaged, as well as trying to determine his
demeanour. I came to the conclusion that McCartney is a man who
takes himself and the industry very serious, but is also emotional these
characteristics I have ensured come across through the article.
3. Question 5
The language used within both the magazines masthead and cover
lines is relatively simple, essentially spelling out what the magazine and
its content will consist of. This ensures the audience are under no
illusions, and are aware the content they crave is inside and they can
proceed in purchasing the magazine. The title mainstream mix
epitomizes the magazine, it incorporates elements from all music
genres, essentially merging them together to cater for the masses. The
use of alliteration in the magazines title also leaves the capacity for
synergy, and is instantly recognisable as a result. The cover line, the
main cover line in fact – McCartney reminisces is blurred in what is a
retro style insinuating the magazine is from the 60’s when the Beatles
rose to prominence, this innovative move will engage the audience,
but also intrigue them as a monumental star will look back on a career
and life few will emulate. The title tells the audience that McCartney
will reflect but is slightly vague and leaves a lot to the imagination
encouraging them to read on.
The font I have used for my mast head and cover lines respectively are
unique, and intriguing in the sense that it also is of a retro kind, relating
to the Beatles, McCartney and the magazines whole vibe.
4. Question 5
I have used a consistent house style throughout my magazine in terms
of both font and graphics. This consistency will prove an attractive
asset, the audience will know what to expect this will act as one
mainstay in a magazine which mainstream content varies so greatly.
The magazine also offers a sense of escapism from day to day life,
similar to that of a video game, which is pivotal as the target audience
are predominantly young, and do not have masses of money to do
anything else with. With exams, first jobs and relationships high on the
agenda for the 15-22 age range this escapism is both timely and
welcomed. I also believe my images and subsequent captions are
relevant and endearing this is particularly apparent on my contents
page.
5. Question 5
Using incentives such as including a competition, or free posters is a
great way in which I have appealed to my audience. It quickly
engages any audience, even those who may not necessarily be great
advocates of the magazine. The coo of prizes may even overcome
the magazines content and singlehandedly sway somebody
encouraging them to purchase the magazine. I have implemented a
competition whereby the audience can win tickets to a festival which
proved popular in my research and planning questionnaire. I am
offering the opportunity to do something they are interested in which
can only be a good thing.
I am also attracting my audience by integrating convergent links
throughout the magazine. This appeals to virtually all of my
monumental target audience particularly the lower embers, more
accustomed to social media. The social media on my page is not
randomly selected it is those which proved most popular in my
research and planning questionnaire, meaning the audience are
inclined to use it, leaving comments and feedback alike, creating
synergy and expanding the magazines reach.
6. Question 5
Here are the graphs I have referred to, the answers to the questions
regarding social media and concerts which helped formed some of
the aspects within my magazine.
7. Question 5
In conclusion, I feel I am effectively appealing to my mass target
audience as I am giving them essentially all the crave which is no
mean feet given the size of the audience. The title epitomizes the
magazine, does what it says on the tin, the magazine will merge
virtually all genres of music, giving them equal billing and bringing
together the masses through their unanimous love of music. The
audience know if they are looking for a magazine focusing explicitly
on RnB to look elsewhere, it will feature as much as respective genres
in ‘Mainstream Mix’. If they however looking for a Mainstream music
magazine which I am sure they are they needn't look any further. By
using a vast array of linguistic techniques whilst adhering to my target
audiences preferences highlighted in the research and planning
questionnaire and its subsequent analysis I am effectively appealing to
my target audience on a variety of levels.
