3. Okanagan—Shuswap (British Columbia)
“Then the thought came to me: why would any political
party want to legalize marijuana, which would only
destroy children's lives and families? Is it not the
duty of government to protect the health and safety
of its citizens?
I said a little prayer while I stood at the poolside. I
petitioned that our grandchildren would never live
under a government that would legalize marijuana.”

"Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to add my voice to the rising opposition to Bill C-10, which
is perhaps best characterized as the Conservatives' most recent piece of dumb on
crime legislation."
“Second, in my opinion, six plants is not a huge number. In more general terms, we are
opposed to the principle of mandatory minimum sentences.”
“Mr. Speaker, I do not accept this principle that the Conservatives have a monopoly on
caring about victims. Our view is that this bill would create more victims because when
we send young people into jail they learn to become criminals and when they get out
they are more likely to reoffend."

5. "Also last week, the Liberal leader said that his priority was
to make it easier to possess and use an illegal drug,
marijuana.
His justice spokesperson echoed those sentiments: hiking
taxes on job creators, lowering the EI qualifying period to
45 days which will increase payroll taxes, increasing the
GST back to 7% and billions in reckless spending, plus the
Liberal leader's iPod tax. The census and marijuana. It
seems like everything is a priority for the Liberal leader
except the economy."

downright dangerous. It wasn't even a temptation.
... I agree with Anne McLellan that there is no study in the world that
shows that marijuana has any medicinal benefits. Would you ever put
any drug on the market untested readily available from dealers on
street corners and say, "oh, well, this has got medicinal benefits." You'd
be run out of town and rightfully so. So, I don't buy the argument that
this has medicinal benefits, it may have psychological benefits. ...”

“The risks of using illegal drugs, including marijuana or cannabis, are far-reaching
and can have serious consequences on the health and future of young
people,” said MP Menegakis. “The evidence showing that the use of cannabis
early in adolescence, while the brain is still developing, may lead to more
lasting, irreparable problems is particularly alarming. Our government has no
tolerance for the production and trafficking of illicit drugs and I am proud of
our landmark crime legislation, The Safe Streets and Communities Act that
was enacted to address the serious problem of organized drug crime.” “In
contrast, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau advocates for the legalization of
marijuana and for making it more easily available to youth,” said MP Menegakis.
“The simple fact is that marijuana is illegal because of the serious
consequences on its users and on society. While our government is focused on
providing law enforcement the tools they need to keep our communities safe,
Mr. Trudeau is undermining the important work of our police services with his
ill-thought out comments. Clearly, Mr. Trudeau is just in over his head.”

The Conservatives are constantly boasting about the
importance they attach to law and order in Canada and about
the fact that they are prepared to put Canadians in jail for
years just because of a few marijuana plants. However, they
refuse to do anything to create obstacles for big drug
traffickers. It is really impossible to understand this
government.

"My next question is in regard to the sweeping changes proposed in the marijuana
for medical purposes regulations. Through these new regulations, medical marijuana
users will be forced to access medical marijuana through expensive commercial
growers. Your own department has submitted that a new cost will be $8.80 per
gram, up from its current rate of $1.80 per gram. Many medical marijuana patients
grow their own supplies or buy medical marijuana from the local compassion clubs
because they are on a limited income due to their illness, or because they have a
disability that prevents them from having a higher income. Why are medical
marijuana patients being forced to buy their own supplies from expensive
commercial growers? How are they expected to afford this medical treatment?"

Part of the bill deals with drugs. I am astonished to see the government

access to an addiction specialist who could tell them how to reduce
their use, what help was available and who could help. This is just one of
many examples."

“Dear Sam Vekemans: Thank you for your correspondence
of January 14, 2013, concerning marijuana. Marijuana is a
psychoactive substance causing alteration of mental and
physical functions. The use of psychoactive substances
raises issues of public health and safety, both for the user
and for those in the broader society affected by the user’s
conduct. The production and trafficking of illicit drugs is
the most significant source of money for gangs and
organized crime. It does profound harm to
neighbourhoods, where homes are turned into grow-ops and
crystal meth labs. ...”

Now, the Conservative Party's law enforcement
caucus is receptive to the idea. "We think it's a
positive move forward and we've expressed that to
the powers that be," said Rick Norlock, caucus chair.

"We have a problem with pot growing in my riding of
Calgary East. In residential areas, marijuana is being grown
and it is becoming a major concern for the community.
Residents have approached us and have asked what we can
do to help them. They has asked us about what kinds of
laws we can put in place to fight this. Drug crimes and
other crimes are moving into communities, threatening law-abiding
Canadians across the country. These incidents are
coming forward, and they are causing concerns."

consideration that six marijuana plants were in

35. Mr. O’Toole said he’d draw the line there.
He’s opposed to legalization and doesn’t
want to see the state involved in
distribution of the drug. “I do not see the
public good in promoting its use,” he said.
“I do not want to see a pot aisle at the
LCBO.”
