Public, Commercial, and Volunteer Service Sectors in Burnaby BC

“The primary concern of the public sector is
the communal good of society – enhancing the
quality of life and well-being of citizens”(Lunn,
2022, p.3). With this in mind, the public library
fits this description and contributes positively to
the community regarding public good. The
library is a place where people can go to study
and read which encompases both rec and
educational components.
The benefits of recreation and leisure include
“The joy of pure participation” and “relaxation,
stress reduction, and improved health” (Ed
Lunn, 2022 p.17). With this in mind, people in
the public are allowed to enter this facility to
part-take in what they desire; whether it is to
study, or to relax.

Brentwood Park Elementary School
Brentwood Park Elementary school is an example of a public
service sector. This is due to how everyone has the right to
an education, despite being rich or poor. With this in mind,
public sectors are “usually free or fees are subsidized;
necessary for society” which expresses how in public school
there is no cost (Lunn, 2022, p.3). The nature of service is
guided towards the public good, with the focus towards the
general public, therefore no cost is required to attend.
It connects to all three components of SPSC 2110
foundations which include recreation, education and
coaching. School is a place to learn about physical literacy in
classes like PE. Recreation occurs during times like recess
where the children run around, play on the playground and
partaking in activities the students enjoy. And Lastly, the
coaching aspect is reflected through the school’s sports
teams; such as volleyball and basketball.

Beecher Park
Beecher Park is an example of a
public service sector due to how it
“provides those opportunities deemed
valuable by society” (Lunn, 2022, p.3)
Parks are open to the public and does
not require a fee for you to play on it.
It connects with SPSC 2210
foundations regarding recreation and
coaching. It connects with coaching
due to this park having a grass soccer
field and a park diamond where sports
teams play and train on. As well as the
park being a recreation/leisure activity
where kids can have fun and play.

Club16 Trevor Linden Fitness Brentwood
Club16 is an example of a Private
(commercial) service vector, specifically the
“indoor commercial recreation” (Lunn, 2022,
p.6). The people that attend this gym pay a
bi-weekly fee towards this facility, and as a
result of this fee they are allowed to workout!
This ties into SPSC 2210 foundational
components recreation due to the people
attending going because they choose to, and
enjoy it. As an individual who attends this
gym, I go because I love how I feel after I
complete a workout and it helps me stay
healthy.

Holy Cross Elementary School
Holy Cross Elementary School is an example of
a private (commercial) sector due to how the
children attending pay. “Commercial recreation
is defined as recreation for which the consumer
pays and for which the supplier expects to make
a profit” which encompases how this school
requires a fee, in which the consumers are the
ones who pay to attend, resulting in the school
making profit (Lunn, 2022, p.6). This connects to
SPSC 2210 regarding all three foundational
components; Rec, Education and Coaching.
Recreation can be reflected through the children
playing activities they enjoy such as recess time.
Physical education is reflected through physical
education classes where the children learn
different skills. Lastly the school’s sports teams
reflects the coaching aspect of 2210
foundational components.

Cineplex VIP Cinemas Brentwood
“Examples of commercial recreation include
movie theatres” and with this in mind, I chose the
new Brentwood Cineplex (Lunn, 2022, p.6). This
Cineplex is part of the commercial service sector
due to how consumers pay to watch the movie,
which also encompases the recreation component.
Recreation is one of the SPSC 2210 foundational
components, and watching movies is one of my
favourite recreational activities to partake in. The
commercial service sector also “recognizes leisure
and recreation trends and fads” which supports
movie theatres immensely on how movies are up
to date and the theatres release what is popular/
what will appeal to the public (Lunn, 2022, p.6).

Salvation Army
Salvation army is a volunteer service vector
due to how it is an organization where the
proceeds go to charity and how it is an “area
of service that has the closest ties to local
communities” (Lunn, 2022, p.8).
Thrifting is one of my favourite activities to
partake in, due to the joy I receive when
finding a new clothing item I enjoy. This is a
connection into SPSC foundational
components recreation. This burnaby
located salvation army is “good for select
populations; good for society/community”
due to how the proceeds help charities for
example homeless shelters (Lunn, 2022,
p.8). Additionally, it connects the community
due to the volunteers who take time out of
their day to help out at this organization.

North Burnaby (Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC)
The North Burnaby Boys and Girls club is an
example of a volunteer service sector. There are
five key components of a non profit which include
how they are “organized, private, non-profit
distributing, self-governing, and voluntary” (Lunn,
2022, p.8). With this in mind the boys and girls club
is a safe space where children can grow to partake
in fun activities and learn.
This organization connects with the recreation and
education aspects of SPSC 2210 foundational
components. It connects with the leisure recreation
aspect due to how “leisure provides leadership
opportunities that build strong communities” and this
non-profit demonstrates those attributes immensely
(Lunn, 2022, p.3). It also connects with the
educational component on how the children at this
club are all supported regarding their learning (both
physical education, and school education). This club
is a place people can go to get the support they
need to help them grow as individuals.

Minor Sport Association; Burnaby Lakers Lacrosse
Burnaby lakers Lacrosse Minor Sport Association is a
non-profit youth sports program. I played Lacrosse for
many years, and fell in love with this sport due to how much
fun I had. In order for this program to be successful,
volunteers is what makes it possible (Lunn, 2022).
My family was very involved with this sport as my father
helped manage the team in addition to doing the time sheet.
This is an example of how the program runs off of
volunteers who take their time to help their community/ this
sport run smoothly. This ties into how it encompasses the
SPSC fundamental component of recreation, and how I
chose to play this sport because of my own love for it.
Another aspect it ties into is the physical side and how it
contains active components due to it being a competitive
sport. With this in mind, the other connection it has to SPSC
is regarding the coaching side and how it is a team sport
where competition, games and practices take place.
