4. The Caribbean & HIV In 2007, the population in the Caribbean was 32,024,000. The UNAIDS informed that by the year 2020, HIV/AIDS may cause 75% of deaths in the region. The Caribbean is the second-most affected region for HIV/AIDS in the world, next to Sub-Saharan Africa. Among adults aged 15–44, AIDS has become the leading cause of death. HIV transmission occurs largely through heterosexual intercourse. With two thirds of AIDS cases in this region attributed to this route, women are most at risk.
