• Hypothesis of the Study: Hypothesis is answer to the research
question(s) taken for study. Answer to the select category of research
question(s) stated above in statement of research problem that are put to
test.

Guidelines In Choosing A Research Problem/Topic For Project
Work
• Problem should be specific narrow and not vague. It should be
limited in scope and not broad or vast.
• The subject matter must be within the reach of understanding
ability of the student.
• The subject for project must be capable of being completed within

while decision making
External Environment- Competition, Substitute goods.
Internal Environment – Decreasing Productivity, increased labour
turnover.
Overall Scenario – Stagnant Sales, Decreasing Margins.
Statement of Research Problem
Out of entire range of problems/ situations, researcher selects a single
problem/ situation for study.
26
Steps towards formulating research problem
Research Issue:
1. Ask as many W/H questions as possible towards research problem/issues.
2. Make a list of all possible research questions
3. Categorize questions on the basis of similarities in issues.
4. Prioritize questions judging need of attention
Statement of Research Problem:
Select appropriate set of category of research questions or a prioritized research question.
While selecting question for statement of problem:
a. Evidences against questions can be located.
b. Interesting and relevant
c. Question is manageable
d. Learn something new from answer of question.
Hypothesis:
Answer the research question(s) to get a statement of hypothesis.
Objectives:
Take it towards fulfillment of aims
Directs the data collection
Directs the data analysis.
27
Example
1. Research Issue: Students passing through Indian educational
system are less employable.
2. Statement of research problem: only 5% of MBA’s are
employable and 3% take up entrepreneurship.
