Biofuel Tour: Visit to Pig Family Ratchaburi
Saturday 14 December 2013

Have you ever seen or smelled a pig sty?

If you have, you'll know why people build pig farms
far away from civilization. You'll know why pig farms
are sometimes chased away from communities that
can no longer stand the impact of the animals on the
quality of life in the area.

Pig Family began as one of those farms, periodically
re-locating in response to community demand. One
farmer decided that there must be a better way, and
did his homework. He found a way to control the
smell and other waste, and to endear his farm to the
local community by providing jobs, food, and
electricity to his neighbors. Far from demanding him
to move on, the people in his village admire and
support the work of Khun Vichien and his relatives.

Compassion Symposium
Gen Y: The Y’s of Compassion
In a world engulfed in conflict and violence, calls for more compassion
have never been louder, but the question on everyone's mind is "What is
compassion?". The definition of compassion has never been more
disparate and individualistic, leading to a wide variety of approaches in
each individual's career and personal life. Nonetheless, we believe that the
world needs a more unified definition and approach in translating
compassion to action in order for the world to be a better place.
Founded by Director Nick as a Young Global Leader, the Bangkok Hub of
the Global Shapers Community (an initiative of the World Economic
Forum), co-hosted the “Compassion Symposium” for Generation Y (under
30s) with Sasin, Sasin Alumni Association (SAA), and the B. Grimm Group
on 9 March 2013 at Sasin Hall. Chief of Operations Alex and Sustainability
Manager Prae were two of the moderators.
The symposium aimed to kick-start the concept of compassion in
Generation Y’s work and life and to spark an internal dialogue of
compassion with every participant. The Symposium explored the dynamic
nature of compassion through keynote speeches and panels by thought
leaders and practitioners from a broad range of perspectives in Thai
society.
Look out for the for the next Compassion event at Sasin and join us in
2014.

Sustainability Conference
Chief of Operations Alex Mavro
attended the AACSB
International Sustainability
Conference
on 23-25 June 2013 in
Washington DC, USA.
Representing Sasin at this
conference, SCSM was able to
strengthen our acquaintance with
the state of play in the
sustainability management
education field.
Sasin is comparatively advanced
in our movement to incorporate
social issues into business
instruction. Two secondary
incentives to attend were to find
allied organizations with which to
network, and to promote Sasin.
One contact made was with the
UN Principles for Responsible
Management Education (PRME).

On 25-26 September 2013, the Sasin Centre for
Sustainability Management (SCSM) participated in the
Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility
(AFCSR) at the Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua in Bali,
Indonesia. Hosted in different cities in Asia by the Asian

annual conference on corporate social responsibility in
the region.
Our Chief of Operations, Alex Mavro, was a co-speaker
with Prof. Nieves R. Confesor, Core Faculty, Asian
Institute of Management in the session “Practical
Approaches to Implementing Social Solutions and
Social Innovations in High Risk Areas”.
The discussion explored challenges and experiences in
operations whose heavy footprint industries are often
located in remote areas with high risk due to the limited
access to infrastructures and institutions providing
security, personal safety and social order.
Our SCSM booth welcomed participants from all
around the region. We also attended a memorial dinner
for the late Prof. Felipe Alfonso, Founding Executive
Director of AFCSR.

Sasin hosted the Caux Round Table Academic Retreat for CSR
thought leaders on 8-9 October and, in collaboration with the
Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Thailand Development and

These three participatory events were planned to write and
publish a Declaration for a New Global Capitalism which will be
presented subsequently to the United Nations.
The task of the special retreat is to consider a draft declaration
of common principles providing global guidance for sustainable
prosperity. The draft as approved by retreat participants will be
presented to the conference for its consideration and ratification.
The discussions also drew upon the important contributions to
CSR theory and practice made by His Majesty the King of
Thailand, recommendations taken from Theravada Buddhist
practices which function as a sophisticated form of risk
management.

The Net Impact Conference 2013
Have you ever been in a room with 3,000
like-minded people who want to create
positive change through the power of
business? Have you ever seen conference
attendees with their own reusable water
bottles? Have you ever listened to more than
2 inspirational business people per day for 3
days straight and have the chance to
exchange business cards with them? The
Net Impact Conference 2013 in San Jose,
CA on 24-26 October is one of the best
events I’ve ever attended.
Whether it was the opening keynote, a
breakout session, the visual presence of the
corporate sponsors, there was a lot of
emphasis on the following ideas.
• Profit Without Pollution
• Business is Power for Change
• Leadership for Change is needed

He found a way to control the smell and other waste, and to endear his farm to the local community by providing jobs, food, and electricity to his neighbors. • 43. Compassion Symposium Gen Y: The Y’s of Compassion In a world engulfed in conflict and violence, calls for more compassion have never been louder, but the question on everyone's mind is "What is compassion?". The definition of compassion has never been more disparate and individualistic, leading to a wide variety of approaches in each individual's career and personal life. Nonetheless, we believe that the world needs a more unified definition and approach in translating compassion to action in order for the world to be a better place. Founded by Director Nick as a Young Global Leader, the Bangkok Hub of the Global Shapers Community (an initiative of the World Economic Forum), co-hosted the “Compassion Symposium” for Generation Y (under 30s) with Sasin, Sasin Alumni Association (SAA), and the B.
