SIP Rauma Brochure
A Seaside view – with benefits Companies currently operating in the area
Dear Reader,
This brochure presents Seaside Industry Park, a future industry park
scheme in Rauma. The plan is to develop the area for the kind of heavy
industries that see strategic importance in excellent logistic connec-
tions. For these industries, the heavy metal product-oriented industry
park will be offering an especially good location. The park is located in a
spot where sea, railway, and road routes cross and form a logistic node.
The idea is also in line with the extension plans of the Port of Rauma,
including area reservations.
The possibility of concentrating all the local heavy metal industry com-
panies into the park leaves the harbour available for the further de-
velopment of port operations. This allows a meaningful and efficient
reorganisation of the region and facilities. The Industry Park is located
in an old shipyard area where the STX Rauma shipyard and Rolls-Royce
currently operate, neighboured by UPM and the Port of Rauma.
The organisations behind the idea are STX, Rolls-Royce, Steerprop and
city of Rauma. A preliminary study, including interviews and evaluation,
has been completed byTampere University ofTechnology. The project is
progressing towards the next step, which will be founding the Industry
Park and building the required facilities for expanding business opera-
tions.
From the start, the aim is to improve the operational environment of
the already existing companies (STX Rauma shipyard and Rolls-Royce)
and create a basis for strengthening network operations. This facilitates
bringing in new businesses that can beneficially utilise the location and
Seaside Industry Park Rauma offers a powerful manufacturing environment in a logistically excellent
location. The Industry Park consists of independent companies, which can pursue economies of scale
and share costs by utilising common infrastructure and support services. Examples of important
support services include storage logistics and surface treatment, among others. Together, these
companies provide an extensive range of manufacturing services, enabling
the efficient execution of large-scale metal product industry projects.
The location next to the sea, combined with the current industrial
base, creates excellent conditions for new business opportunities. An
integrated supply network creates the competitive advantage of fast
deliveries, by reducing transportation and storing to a minimum.
This dynamic and growing industrial park provides versatile and
interesting working opportunities. Integrating research and
education activities into a key part of the area supports devel-
oping business operations and improves the availability of
skilled workforce.

nies are mainly used to manufacture the components for Steerprop
Azimuth Propulsors. The propulsors are built and vigorously tested
in Steerprop Ltd.’s own assembly hall. The company continuously
strives to produce even more powerful propulsors to meet the
needs of the future.
Steerprop Ltd. has an immediate 40 employees and employs
another 200 with its network of subcontractors. In recent years,
100% of the company’s products have been exported from Finland.
networking companies in a new and innovative manner.
The economic region of Rauma as a whole is strongly industrial. The ship
building, mechanical engineering, forest and energy industries currently
form a growing industrial concentration which is significant to the na-
tional economy of the entire Finnish nation. The current spearheads of
growth are the mechanical engineering and nuclear power industries
which creates a basis for industrial restructuring and a new kind of en-
trepreneurshipintheRauma region.Inthisbigpicture,theconcept ofan
Industry Park for heavy metal industries supports this development and,
in turn, supplies a valid framework for future development.

Case: Heavy industry project in the Industry Park
Turnkey deliveries for heavy industries
Seaside Industry Park Rauma brings together engineering
offices, skilful workforce and special industrial services. A
comprehensive service network and support infrastructure
allow rapid completion of projects and continuous deliver-
ies in a cost-efficient manner. The manufacturing capacity
of the area can be utilised by engineering offices and
manufacturing companies.
The current existing and planned range of manufacturing
services cover steel acquisition and prefabrication, machin-
ing processes, surface treatment, and assembly and weld-
ing in the large assembly hall. The heavy cargo dock and
port service enable shipping end products directly from the
area or from the Port of Rauma.
City of Rauma invests in availability of skilled
workforce
The city of Rauma is proud of its strong industrial base and
continues to improve education and research activities to
support the needs of industry. This is important in develop-
ing the competencies at Seaside Industry Park Rauma.
A campus for second degree vocational education and
University of Applied Sciences in close proximity to the
Park also provide a versatile range of educational and RDI
services.
• WinNova Rauma provides second degree vocational
education in 12 different fields. Training is provided
for machinists, plate welders, warehousemen, process
care-takers, watchkeeping engineers and officers, ship
electricians, electricians, automation mechanics, vehicle
mechanics, house builders, carpenters, plumbers and
safety supervisors.
• Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK)
educates mechanical and production engineers, logistics,
industrial management and maritime engineers, sea
captains, and offers BBA degree programs in International
Business and Marketing Logistics and International
Business in Rauma.
• Tampere University of Technology (TUT) currently has
research units specializing in Electronics and Hydraulics
in Rauma. Operations can be strengthened in the future
depending on the needs of the Industrial Park and Rauma
area.
• Wander Water Institute is Prizztech Ltd’s research and
development unit in Rauma. It provides expert services in
the water technology and water contact material fields.
The close relations between companies and educational
organizations are a major factor in local co-operation,
resulting in clear benefits. Close collaboration with educa-
tional institutions allows teaching to be steered towards
industrial needs and offers the students excellent oppor-
tunities for practical training. The campus area is being
developed to benefit from synergies with Seaside Industry
Park Rauma, to form a Centre of Competence according to
industrial needs in the fields of research and education.
Efficient logistics
The industry park has direct road and railway connections
and is located right next to the port of Rauma. In the future,
a heavy cargo peer will be built inside the park area to allow
large cargo imports and exports to be handled entirely
inside a closed production area. The logistics center enables
the efficient use of production facilities, inventory manage-
ment and direct part deliveries in the production process.
The Port of Rauma is the leading container cargo port in
western Finland. The traffic in 2012 was 6 million tons and
container shipments were 240 000 TEUs. Exports comprise
two thirds of the traffic and imports about one third.
Regular line routes have been established to western and
southern Europe, British Isles and the east coast of USA.
The most important benefits
for heavy metal industry
corporations
• Demand-based tailored set of services
which enables large turnkey delivery
execution in a single location
• A logistically excellent location and
existing lifting and transportation capacity
for handling heavy items
• Strong purchasing knowhow and long
term experience from project management
• Skilled individual companies focusing on
continuous development of processes
Engineering offices are able to show a credible manufacturing
location for large scale projects, such as wind mills, by ordering them
from the Seaside Industry Park Rauma.
The parts are manufactured and assembled in collaboration by a number
of companies. Moving large and heavy parts is easily organised inside the
industry park without need for long distance transportations.
The finished products are shipped directly from the
heavy cargo dock.
The modern crane capacity of the port of Rauma is well
suited for operating containers, cargo and individual items.
The port of Rauma is also suited for project deliveries
because of the good road connections and versatile crane
capacity. Crane lifting capacity reaches up to 200 tons.
Rauma is a popular site for exporting propellers and large
diesel engines, among other products.

Many opportunities for SMEs
Operating in the Industry Park opens new opportunities for
SMEs which would be difficult to achieve alone. The flexible
availability of heavy transportation equipment, surface and
heat treatment processes, and the special competences of
other companies allow providing comprehensive service solu-
tions to an extended range of customers.
In addition, the research and education services available from
the area enable participation in corporate-oriented develop-
ment projects and support the continuous development of
one’s operations.
Supporting services in the area
Seaside Industry Park Rauma is based on productivity and effi-
ciency driven thinking where the benefits from economies of
scale are realised throughout the supply network. The efficient
logistics and favourable location make it easy to serve both
inland and export customers from the region of Rauma.
A company locating into the area has an immediate access to
property maintenance, guarding, and catering services, with
the possibility to utilize a tailored set of special processes. The
potential customer base and overall volume enable new invest-
ments which would be difficult to realise for a private company.
In the process, the competitiveness of the whole area increases
and the business opportunities of all companies improve.
Case: Industry Park from the SME point-of-view
The most important benefits
for an SME
• Proximity to customer base and the
possibility to participate in realisation
of large scale projects
• Supplementary range of services
provided by other companies which
enhances own core competence
• Existing production and office
facilities
• A flexible cost structure that is based
on use of services
The daily life of a small entrepreneur is burdened by various
tasks that take time from the actual business. Productivity
suffers and small volumes increase purchasing unit costs.
In Seaside Industry Park Rauma, the entrepreneur finds facilities
and demand for his competence. Shared support services such as
cleaning, guarding, maintenance and storing serve all companies
in the Park.
The Industry Park makes everything run smoother, faster,
and with less costs than before. This allows the entrepreneur
to focus on his core business.
A great network is a
prerequisite for success
One significant factor in the success story of
Rolls-Royce has been the resolute work in de-
velopingoursupplynetworktogetherwiththe
suppliers.Ourpremisehasalwaysbeenthatef-
ficientlynetworkedoperationsandcompetent
partnersformaninevitablebasisforsuccessful
business.
An efficient and competitive network is like a
good personal relationship. In order to make
it work, both parties need to continuously in-
vest in maintaining and developing it towards
a common goal. That goal is, naturally, the
highest possible competitiveness. It is also a
relationship where both parties have better
chances of acquiring success together, rather
than alone.
In order to stay internationally competitive
amid an increasingly tougher market, we
constantly need to develop the capabilities
and flexibility of our supply chains. Seaside
Industry Park provides extremely good condi-
tions and opportunities for achieving this.

  • 4. Case: Heavy industry project in the Industry Park Turnkey deliveries for heavy industries Seaside Industry Park Rauma brings together engineering offices, skilful workforce and special industrial services. A comprehensive service network and support infrastructure allow rapid completion of projects and continuous deliver- ies in a cost-efficient manner. The manufacturing capacity of the area can be utilised by engineering offices and manufacturing companies. The current existing and planned range of manufacturing services cover steel acquisition and prefabrication, machin- ing processes, surface treatment, and assembly and weld- ing in the large assembly hall. The heavy cargo dock and port service enable shipping end products directly from the area or from the Port of Rauma. City of Rauma invests in availability of skilled workforce The city of Rauma is proud of its strong industrial base and continues to improve education and research activities to support the needs of industry. This is important in develop- ing the competencies at Seaside Industry Park Rauma. A campus for second degree vocational education and University of Applied Sciences in close proximity to the Park also provide a versatile range of educational and RDI services. • WinNova Rauma provides second degree vocational education in 12 different fields. Training is provided for machinists, plate welders, warehousemen, process care-takers, watchkeeping engineers and officers, ship electricians, electricians, automation mechanics, vehicle mechanics, house builders, carpenters, plumbers and safety supervisors. • Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) educates mechanical and production engineers, logistics, industrial management and maritime engineers, sea captains, and offers BBA degree programs in International Business and Marketing Logistics and International Business in Rauma. • Tampere University of Technology (TUT) currently has research units specializing in Electronics and Hydraulics in Rauma. Operations can be strengthened in the future depending on the needs of the Industrial Park and Rauma area. • Wander Water Institute is Prizztech Ltd’s research and development unit in Rauma. It provides expert services in the water technology and water contact material fields. The close relations between companies and educational organizations are a major factor in local co-operation, resulting in clear benefits. Close collaboration with educa- tional institutions allows teaching to be steered towards industrial needs and offers the students excellent oppor- tunities for practical training. The campus area is being developed to benefit from synergies with Seaside Industry Park Rauma, to form a Centre of Competence according to industrial needs in the fields of research and education. Efficient logistics The industry park has direct road and railway connections and is located right next to the port of Rauma. In the future, a heavy cargo peer will be built inside the park area to allow large cargo imports and exports to be handled entirely inside a closed production area. The logistics center enables the efficient use of production facilities, inventory manage- ment and direct part deliveries in the production process. The Port of Rauma is the leading container cargo port in western Finland. The traffic in 2012 was 6 million tons and container shipments were 240 000 TEUs. Exports comprise two thirds of the traffic and imports about one third. Regular line routes have been established to western and southern Europe, British Isles and the east coast of USA. The most important benefits for heavy metal industry corporations • Demand-based tailored set of services which enables large turnkey delivery execution in a single location • A logistically excellent location and existing lifting and transportation capacity for handling heavy items • Strong purchasing knowhow and long term experience from project management • Skilled individual companies focusing on continuous development of processes Engineering offices are able to show a credible manufacturing location for large scale projects, such as wind mills, by ordering them from the Seaside Industry Park Rauma. The parts are manufactured and assembled in collaboration by a number of companies. Moving large and heavy parts is easily organised inside the industry park without need for long distance transportations. The finished products are shipped directly from the heavy cargo dock. The modern crane capacity of the port of Rauma is well suited for operating containers, cargo and individual items. The port of Rauma is also suited for project deliveries because of the good road connections and versatile crane capacity. Crane lifting capacity reaches up to 200 tons. Rauma is a popular site for exporting propellers and large diesel engines, among other products.

In addition, the research and education services available from the area enable participation in corporate-oriented develop- ment projects and support the continuous development of one’s operations. Supporting services in the area Seaside Industry Park Rauma is based on productivity and effi- ciency driven thinking where the benefits from economies of scale are realised throughout the supply network. Case: Industry Park from the SME point-of-view The most important benefits for an SME • Proximity to customer base and the possibility to participate in realisation of large scale projects • Supplementary range of services provided by other companies which enhances own core competence • Existing production and office facilities • A flexible cost structure that is based on use of services The daily life of a small entrepreneur is burdened by various tasks that take time from the actual business. Productivity suffers and small volumes increase purchasing unit costs. In Seaside Industry Park Rauma, the entrepreneur finds facilities and demand for his competence. Shared support services such as cleaning, guarding, maintenance and storing serve all companies in the Park. The Industry Park makes everything run smoother, faster, and with less costs than before. This allows the entrepreneur to focus on his core business. An efficient and competitive network is like a good personal relationship. In order to make it work, both parties need to continuously in- vest in maintaining and developing it towards a common goal. That goal is, naturally, the highest possible competitiveness. It is also a relationship where both parties have better chances of acquiring success together, rather than alone. In order to stay internationally competitive amid an increasingly tougher market, we constantly need to develop the capabilities and flexibility of our supply chains. Seaside Industry Park provides extremely good condi- tions and opportunities for achieving this.
