5. • Kanpur is a city situated on the banks of River Ganga and is an important industrial
centre of Uttar Pradesh. Known for its historical and religious past the city was a
breeding ground for a change in the freedom and literary movements during the first
half of the 20th century. Supposed to have been founded by King Hindu Singh of the
earlier state of Sachendi, the city was formerly known as “Kanhpur”.Later it became a
strategic and business centre during the British period and a large garrison was
established here. Kanpur also played an important role during the war of
Independence of 1857 and during the freedom struggle of India. Great heroes like
Nana Sahib, Tatya Tope, Ajimullah khan etc. have operated from Kanpur during the
freedom movement. Kanpur is also known globally for the finest quality leather
tanned by them. It has become the core producer of saddlery products and is a
prominent centre for leather processing. The beautiful leather apparels, industrial
gloves, stylish belts and bags that adorn the people and add to their personality are
actually manufactured in this splendid town. Kanpur has indeed earned the glory of
being called as a “LeatherCity”.

7. Alphons Kannanthanam
Alphons Joseph Kannanthanam or K. J. Alphons
(born 8 August 1953) is an Indian civil servant,
advocate, and politician. He is currently serving
as the Union Minister of State for Culture, and
Tourism, in office since 3 September 2017 under
the B.J.P. Government of Narendra Modi.
He is the second BJP Central Minister from Kerala
after O. Rajagopal. Kannanthanam belongs to the
1979 batch of the Indian Administrative Service
(I.A.S.), Kerala cadre. He was in Time Magazine's
list of 100 Young Global Leader. He served as
Commissioner of the Delhi Development
Authority.
8. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will inaugurate Travel Mart organised by
the state government and FICCI in Lucknow today. The mega event is being organised
to promote tourism in the state especially brand Kumbh 2019. Our correspondent
reports that domestic as well as foreign tour operators from across the world will
attend the 3-day event.
Around 50 top of the line tour operators from 23 countries is expected to take part in
the mega tourism event. The state government has also made the arrangements for a
special introductory tour of three heritage circuits including Bundelkhand, Krishna and
Baudhs circuits for the foreign tour operators so that they can take the glimpse of
travel avenues in the state.
In the 3 day, event focus will also be on the branding of Kumbh 2019 for which
Government has announced many special plans related to tourism. Around 20
domestic operators from 9 states are also expected to take part in the event.
