Required:

1. Refer to the Metropolis Health System case study appearing in Chapter 25.
Read about the various types of services offered by MHS.

2. The MHS organization chart has seven major areas of responsibility, each
headed by a senior vice president (refer to page 291). Select one of the seven
areas (Information Systems, Finance, Human Affairs, etc.) and indicate the
additional levels of management that would fall under this area. Examples of
organizational charts are located in Figure 1-2 (pg. 7) and Figure 25-1 (pg. 290).

3. Do you believe your design of the detailed organization chart indicates
centralized or decentralized lines of authority for decision making? Can you
explain your approach in one or two sentences?
Grouping Expenses. Referencing Chapters 5 and 6 in the text, and using
evidence in your text or from other sources for support, discuss the three ways to
group expenses:

1. Traditional cost centers, diagnoses/procedures, and care settings.

2. Compare and contrast the different types of groupings.

3. Discuss the pros and cons of each. Provide and explain at least two
examples/scenarios in which you would use specific groupings. Justify your
response.

4. Which type of grouping do you think is better to use for control and planning?

5. Are there situations/circumstances where certain groupings would be
completely inappropriate? Why? Respond to at least two classmates’ postings.

Cost Centers. Complete the Assignment Exercise 5-1 on page 360-361. Answer
the questions in the text, and submit your responses to your instructor.

Contribution Margin. Complete the Assignment Exercise 7-2 on page 365.
Answer the questions in the text, and submit your responses to your instructor.
You must show your work of how you computed the contribution margin.

Reporting.Referencing Chapter 10 in the text, and using evidence from other
sources for support answer the following questions. If you owned your own
business, how would you utilize the information reported on your balance sheet,
statement of revenue and expense, and statement of cash flows? What
determinations or decisions can be made with the information reported? Please
discuss your response, and include an APA citation from a minimum of one
scholarly reference to support your 250-300 word post. Respond to at least two of
your classmates’ posts.

Business Plan Topic. A business plan is a document, typically prepared in order
to obtain funding and/or financing. For your Final Paper in Week 5, you will
assume the role of an entrepreneur and create a business plan to present to an
investment company, seeking funding/financing for a type of health care
business. In the scenario you choose, you may already own a company you are
looking to expand, or you may focus on a start-up company.

Types of healthcare business you could select include: a hospital or clinic, dental
equipment distributor, a healthcare training provider, a pharmaceutical biotech
research firm, or a company offering hospice in-home workers. You may also
select a similar company that is not listed.
For this assignment, answer the questions listed in Chapter 24, Exhibit 24-2
“Basic Information for the Service or Equipment Description” as they pertain to
your selected business. These answers will help you as you begin to develop
your business plan.

MHS Analysis. Refer to the Metropolis Health System Supplemental Information
at the back of the Examples and Exercises section. Use the MHS comparative
Balance Sheet, Statement of Revenue and Expenses, and Statement of Fund
Balance (pgs. 404 – 407).

1) Identify the amounts for the current year for the following categories:

a. Current Liabilities

b. Total Assets

c. Income from Operations

d. Accumulated Depreciation

e. Total Operating Revenue

f. Current Portion of Long-Term Debt

g. Interest Income

h. Inventories

2) Metropolis currently has $1,150,000 in cash. How long would it take them to
accumulate $2,000,000 in cash? Assume an interest rate of 5 percent.

Capital Expenditure Budget. If you were assigned to prepare a capital
expenditure budget request to add a retail pharmacy in the hospital, which two
individuals from your department(s) would you want to have on your team to help
you? How would you utilize them to help you? Justify your response and include
a minimum of one scholarly reference to support your answer. Respond to at
least two of your classmates’ posts.

Capital Expenditure Proposals. Refer to Assignment Exercise 16-1 on page
393 in your assigned course textbook and submit your answers to the questions
in the text. In your response, include at least four requests Ted should make.
Justify the requests and explain the strategy. Your paper needs to be two-three
pages (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA
guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. You must use at least one
scholarly source besides the textbook, cited in APA format.
Operating Budget. Review Mini-Case Study 1 in Chapter 26 in your assigned
course textbook. In a one-to-two page paper, explain why you would or would not
accept the proposal to add a retail pharmacy to a hospital. List at least three
improvements that could be made to the proposal to make it more effective.

Lease or Buy. Referencing Chapter 23 in your text, and using evidence in your
text or from other sources for support, discuss the following in a minimum of 250-
300 words: In the examples used in the chapter, there is not much monetary
difference between owning versus leasing. In these circumstances, which method
would you recommend? Why? Support your assertions with a minimum of one
scholarly source, cited in APA format.

Refer to Chapter 24 of the text. Utilize the health care business you selected in
Week One as well as the answers to the Basic Information questions. Create a
Business Plan proposal for your health care company that includes the following
sections:

1. Executive Summary: 1 – 2 pages, concise summary of a business report. It
restates the purpose of the report, it highlights the major points of the report, and
it describes any results, conclusions, or recommendations from the report.

2. Service and / or Equipment Description: 1 page minimum

3. Organizational Plan: 1 page minimum, include a chart that illustrates the
structure of the organization. In addition, provide a summary of your management
(i.e. background, responsibilities, etc.)

4. Marketing Segment: 1 page minimum, include demographics, target market,
any incentives, competitors, advertisement, etc.

5. Financial Analysis: Projected income statement and types of assumptions
made to compute the figures.

a. Typical Income Statement assumption information requirements.

b. What types of revenue?

c. How many services will be offered to produce the revenue (by month)?

d. How much labor will be required (FTEs)?

e. What will the labor cost?

f. How many and what types of supplies, drugs and/or devices will be required to
offer the service?
g. What will the supplies, drugs and/or devices cost?

h. How much space will be required?

i. What will the required space occupancy cost?

j. Is special equipment required?

Your Business Plan should include a title page and table of contents (section and
page numbers).

The final paper must be eight-to ten-pages in length (excluding title and reference
pages). Include five to eight scholarly sources, cited in APA format.
