The Needs Theory
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation. Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, all of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans.
If we go deep into the matter, we can say that needs theories can act as viable management tools. For example, its used in International Business and Marketing aspects of business as well. MARKETING Courses in marketing teach Maslow's hierarchy as one of the first theories as a basis for understanding consumers' motives for action. Marketers have historically looked towards consumers' needs to define their actions in the market. If producers design products meeting consumer needs, consumers will more often choose those products over those of competitors. Whichever product better fills the void created by the need will be chosen more frequently, thus increasing sales INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Understanding the strengths and weakness of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is important in the field of international business. Evaluating the different needs, values, drives and priorities of people from different countries - individualistic or collectivist - is incredibly valuable in cross-cultural communications, and especially within the workplace. It also illustrates how differences in values can greatly affect work atmosphere and work ethic between cultures
1: Could a manager use some of this exercise in an organizational setting to enhance employer motivation? The answer is YES. These various theories helps a manager to analyze and also to comprehensively determine traits about the employees. The needs theory will help a manager, by manager we are basically talking about HR manager here, to determine behavior of an employee and at the same time helping to tune the employee to optimum levels of satisfaction. Motivation theories helps managers to find the best way out to motivate employees and at the same time understand the scenarios better and also plan future course of action
